Issue: Problem caused by your funds being low
Subissue: Overdrafts and overdraft fees
Consumer Complaint: I was making a payment to my credit card, and I went over by {$2.00} apparently. M & T Bank then decided to charge me a {$40.00} fee for that, then another {$40.00} fee because I did not pay it within five days. This is criminal behavior, I should not be threatened to pay {$80.00} because I went over by {$2.00}, even though I 'm pretty sure I did n't. They are threatening to give me black marks on my record and close the account unless I pay their ransom. M & T Bank is full of the worst kinds of scum and I can not wait for the day I close my account with them for good.

Issue: Struggling to pay mortgage
Subissue:
Consumer Complaint: I contacted the mortgage company approximately 2 months ago requesting assistance with paying my mortgage, since I had recently become unemployed. I provided all the requested information on XX/XX/XXXX They requested proof of being on unemployment, which was provided. They then requested the same information two or three times, extending the process. I was informed that in order to be approved, the mortgage had to be in current standing. So, I have really struggled to keep the mortgage current while awaiting the approval for assistance. I received a letter finally on XX/XX/XXXX. It stated that M & T Bank had received the additional information which was requested in order to complete the Loss Mitigation application. They stated they were in the process of reviewing the documents to determine if I qualified. I made a call into M & T this afternoon just to check that they had all the documents they had requested, and was informed that they had denied my application due to the fact that I did n't have a job. Well, yes, THAT was the REASON I was asking for assistance. They have offered no other options. I am at a point where I can not pay next month 's mortgage, which puts me in fear of not qualifying for assistance once I send in a request for review of the denial. I am flabbergasted that the programs designed to assist the homeowners when the times are temporarily difficult, would be unavailable due to the lack of income. If I HAD my job, I would not be asking for help!

Issue: Opening an account
Subissue: Didn't receive terms that were advertised
Consumer Complaint: I opened a checking account at M & T Bank in XXXX of 2017 at their branch on XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX, XXXX, XXXX XXXX. I used a promotion code ( XXXX ), which promised {$200.00} dollars after direct depositing {$100.00} or more into a checking account. The woman who helped me open my account at M & T assured me that I was eligible for the promotion and that she included the promotion code in the computer system at the time of opening my account. I arranged the direct deposit within the required 3 months and, as per the promotion, I expected to received my {$200.00} within 3 months of having my $ 100+ direct deposit go through. A direct deposit of {$100.00} went through on XXXX XXXX, XXXX. Three months later, I still had not received my {$200.00} so I called the bank branch. A representative asked me to email them the coupon I had to see the code. I obliged and the woman said that the promotion had a computer-based system with names in it of people who are qualified - apparently my name was not in the computer system. However, if this were the case, the M & T representative did not inform me of this when I first opened my account and even assured me I was eligible. Furthermore, the coupon mentions nothing about a computer-based system with eligible names ( I attached it to this complaint ). After mentioning this to a representative over the phone ( working at the branch where I first opened my account ), she told me she would call me back after looking into the matter. I never received a phone call or a message/email back from the representative and I never received the {$200.00} per the promotion.

Consumer Complaint: I opened an M & T EZChoice Checking account on XXXX XXXX, XXXX. M & T advertised a promotion that promised a {$150.00} bonus after a direct deposit of {$100.00}. I have met the conditions for the bonus and when I asked a customer service representative when the bonus would post, she told me that the promotion was targeted to particular persons and that my name was not on the list, so I would not be receiving the bonus. This is not true, the terms made no mention of this being a targeted promotion and I replied stating this. A second representative replied to me and she changed the story, saying that the account was opened in a region that was not eligible for the promotion. The terms also made no mention of this. M & T should honor the terms of the agreement that they made with the customer.

Subissue: Problem accessing account
Consumer Complaint: On Friday XXXX XXXX, 2017 I received three letters concerning three accounts I have with M & T Bank- that they are going to close all my bank accounts- including a personal credit card, my personal bank account, a company bank account and my 401K retirement account in 30 days and I must take all my accounts to another bank. They have not given me any reason for this and state they will not give me a reason. I have a XXXX credit score and never had a returned charge. Also, the 401K bank account took weeks to set up and I can not switch this account to another bank at this time and possibly not at any time in the future. Some banks do not open accounts like this and it is a very long process to open this type of account. The bank has required me to keep {$5000.00} on deposit for my 401K accounts and I have done that. Why would they not want to keep this account since there is no expense for them to hold and maintain this account? Why do they do this to a very good customer with a very good record and credit score? I can not move these accounts at this time because I am a XXXX for a XXXX XXXX XXXX program and have too much work to do in the last 4 weeks of the session to spend on setting up new accounts with another bank.

We claimed bankruptcy in XXXX XXXX and I have n't been offered any other payment options other than pay in full which I am unable to do right now. We do not want to lose our home and we are willing to pay.

Issue: Struggling to pay mortgage

Consumer Complaint: I had bought my home in XX/XX/XXXX, and I fell behind on mortgage payment in XX/XX/XXXX, but I was able to get a repayment plan with M & T Bank in XX/XX/XXXX after becoming unemployed in XX/XX/XXXX. Also, I had fell behind in HOA dues in XX/XX/XXXX, and I tried to get a repayment plan from them in XX/XX/XXXX, but they would n't negotiate. Actually, they returned my money order. Recently, I have stopped making mortgage payments due to misinformation from the bank that the HOA was n't the owner that I am. I have learned otherwise through a title search that my bank deceived me from the truth of ownership. Now, when I call the bank 's attorney, I am always asked if I have a lawyer before I can speak to the attorney. My question is, will I get a notice from bank when I can move my personal possessions out. I was told that the bank will not be the owner after the foreclosure. How not? Because of this bank, I faxed the HOA notice to vacate to them for direction, and they ignored it. I called M & T Bank, and I was told that I am still the owner of the property. Today as I write this complaint, I am still told the same information. My personal property remains in the house, and I am not helped in accessing the home by this HOA to retrieve them. They refuse to work in good faith with me to let me view the inside as proof. I do not believe their word, because of their process of no repayment plan. I could n't afford an attorney during this process. Both the bank and HOA took advantage of my lack of the laws and legal representation. My whole life is in this house that I 've acquired over my XXXX years. Others that I shared my story have never heard that an HOA want to do this. I feel emotionally helpless and frustrated thinking about my personal papers, unreplaceable family pictures, and other personals that are unreplaceable. My house was stolen from me, but I am pleading for the return of my possessions. That 's all!
