Issue: Struggling to repay your loan
Subissue: Can't get other flexible options for repaying your loan
Consumer Complaint: I graduated college in 2011 with about 25,000 in debt. I was misled regarding student loans by sallie Mae now navient as they told us that my mother could co-sign but later be taken off when I demonstrated that I could pay consistently for a period of time. We were also misled about rates and repayment options causing us to accrue thousands and thousands of additional debt. I have now paid my loans consistently for years and owe over 40,000 of debt. My mother is still a co-signer and we have been told now that she will never come off as a co-signer. This company misled us causing thousands of dollars of debt that should be repaid.

Consumer Complaint: There is still an account being posted on my credit report, that effects my score. The Sallie Mae closed account is listed 7 times as individual accounts and is still listed well beyond 10yrs. The account is from 2007, again listed 7 times as individual accounts. Showing I have 7 closed accounts. I have asked the old accounts to be removed, which included in the past other accounts. The other accounts were removed, yet there are still 7 of the same account listed. This is wrong and needs to be fixed properly.

Issue: Dealing with your lender or servicer
Subissue: Received bad information about your loan
Consumer Complaint: Seven years ago I was having a difficult time paying for student loans. I was informed by sallie mae/ navient to consolidate the loans and get on the income based repayment plan to get the loans forgiven and after 120 consecutive payments the loan would be forgiven because I was a XXXX. At the time I had already been XXXX 7 years and was not given information about my loans being forgiven for public service without consolidating them. I wasnt informed that my clock was going to restart if I consolidate. I was even recently informed that I could consolidate a parent plus and help with my payments and again was not told that if I did that my clock would start over. I stated it to the rep and she said well yes it would. I said to her why would you not share that before trying to get me to do it. She stated we dont volunteer that information. I believe that this needs to be shared my loan continues to go up if I was informed of this 7 years ago I would have never consolidate and would be out of student loan debt

Consumer Complaint: I am currently enrolled at XXXX University in a XXXX program. I have been continuously enrolled as a full or part-time student since XXXX. I do not anticipate graduation until XXXX. Navient is currently servicing 2 different loans. When I started at XXXX, they received the clearinghouse information and placed my loans on in-school deferment. My status has not changed since XXXX. Inexplicably, Navient has removed my in-school deferment and XXXX status and is actively attempting to collect the debt and induce a default. They are ignoring my written communications and ignoring the XXXX University clearinghouse data, which I verified with the registrar as reflecting my status as fully-enrolled in this semester and every semester with no breaks since XXXX. Navient needs to comply with Federal law, acknowledge the clearinghouse information, and return my status to in-school deferment. Otherwise, we're considering Navient 's actions as a willful breach of the terms and conditions of the loan and a violation of Federal law.

Consumer Complaint: Navient Student loans - XX/XX/19 I submitted a request for refinancing and was able to login and submit my application. A confirmation email was sent to me saying that they would contact me when my new payment plan was ready. I have not received any correspondence from them giving me information on my new plan. In the meantime I received numerous collection calls from them. I have since not been able to access my online account as it says that my login information is wrong. I am not able to make calls at my place of employment during the day so I tried numerous times to email them but can not reach a working email. Now yesterday I received a letter saying they will be intercepting my tax return.

Consumer Complaint: My Loan servicer Navient failed to acknowledge my documented financial hardship due to XXXX as I was unable to my my loans and was looking to reasonably defer them. Regardless, I had also moved and was trying to update my contact information to get status of my loans by mail, however upon attempt to contact by phone, nobody was able to review and change my loan information. My email address had changed because I no longer had access to my school email. As I was experiencing my hardship due to XXXX, the loans apparently defaulted and I had no way to access nor was I in any condition to deal with it due to XXXX. Now that they have defaulted, not only is the lender reflecting late payments but the reflection on my credit is a double reflection of default on both servicers, both the original, and the lender, which there should only be one or the other.

Consumer Complaint: I wanted to refinance my loans with Navient which were at a fairly high interest rate, so I looked into taking a different loan at a lower interest rate. With the help of my parents, I took out a different loan at a lower rate and on XX/XX/XXXX, we went to settlement on that loan. A check was cut at the title company, XXXX XXXX in XXXX, Pennsylvania. The company told us that Navient had a bad habit of getting checks and just holding them. If the check was sent through the US mail, it couldn't be tracked and then interest would just accumulate on the account and I wouldn't be able to trace the check. She suggested we XXXX the check so that we could trace it. However, to do that, we needed a physical address, not a PO box address. ( A PO BOX address is what I was given when I called Navient for the payoff and address. ) So the person at XXXX XXXX called the number on the Navient Website and pushed the zero until we got an actual person. After explaining several times that we needed a physical address for the check we were sending, she gave us a name and address. We sent the check to an address in XXXX, PA. I do not know why they gave us this address, but since we had given the person my name and account number, we assumed they knew what they were doing. I guess it was not the correct address, because we were later told it went to the wrong department. ( In addition to the check, we enclosed a letter with my name, account number, and phone number and told them to contact me if there were any questions or problems with the check. So I don't know why they cashed it if it had been sent to the wrong place. ) After about a week, I realized that the money had not been applied to my loan. I started calling Navient ( which is not an easy task ) only to learn that they had cashed the check but would not be applying it to my loan because it went to the wrong department. I assumed this meant that they would just transfer it to the right department and then apply it. Since they had cashed it, I assumed they would no longer charge me interest since they had my money. They then informed me that they would continue to charge me interest and that it could take up to 8 weeks for this to be resolved. In the meantime, I would still need to make payments and they would continue to charge me interest. Meanwhile, I also had another loan I was now paying on top of the Navient loan. I disputed the logic of this, but they said this was the government 's rule. My mother got involved since she had helped me acquire the other loan and was now responsible for the other loan and somewhat involved in this. She dealt with a gentleman named XXXX ( employee # XXXX ) who initially agreed to expedite the matter and said he would try to expedite the transfer but after doing this would frequently not take her calls when she tried to follow-up on the matter. Keep in mind, this was approximately {$20000.00} we were concerned about, which is a lot of money in our world. My mother made calls to Navient on XXXX ( 1 hour 45 min ) XXXX ( 40 min ) XX/XX/XXXX, XX/XX/XXXX ( called twice ), XX/XX/XXXX - at this point my mother started calling senators. She contacted Senator XXXX XXXX office, who happens to be my senator. XXXX finally called back at this point and informed my mother that the matter should be resolved before my next payment would be due on XX/XX/XXXX. As of this morning - XX/XX/XXXX, the loan is now paid off. However, there is now an overpayment because I had to keep paying on the loan. I do not know when I will receive that money ( the overpayment ). I do not feel I should have been charged any interest after the time that Navient cashed my check. I know they received the check on XX/XX/XXXX. I have proof of that from the XXXX receipt. I think this entire process was very unfair and designed to take every last possible penny from me they possibly could. Unlike many borrowers, I was a student who faithfully repaid my loan. I never missed a payment and was trying to do the responsible, honest thing. Navient was not acting in good faith. I am looking for simple fairness and hoping that I can save someone else the aggravation that I faced in this process. There has to be a better way. Thank you for your time.

Issue: Dealing with your lender or servicer
Subissue: Trouble with how payments are being handled
Consumer Complaint: I made a payment of {$1500.00} on XXXX XX/XX/2020 that I requested to be paid only toward a specific loan with the expectation to reduce the principal of only that loan. I noticed that Navient ( who handles my loans ) incorrectly split the payment towards two different loans that I have with them. I spoke to a Navient call center representative earlier this month and I was told that they would allocate payment ( s ) toward the principal of the loan I request once any unpaid interest is paid off, however that is not what Navient did with my request. I have read on the internet in several different news websites that Navient has malpractices for loan processing and the CFPB has been involved so I thought I would file a complaint here first for assistance. I am hoping for correction of this error as one of millions of people relying on the honesty of loan companies during the tedious process of paying back loans.
