Consumer Complaint: In XX/XX/2023, a friend who had previously made payments to me over Venmo and to whom I had previously made payment made a payment to me over Venmo for her half of an XXXX rental. For reasons unknown to her or me, Venmo terminated the payment and froze both of our Venmo accounts. In order to reactivate my account, they asked that I verify my identity by providing a photo of my driver 's license and a photo of me holding my driver 's license. I provided that information and then they permanently deactivated my account. I asked why and they refused to inform me, pointing only vaguely to their terms of service. I read their terms of service, including their acceptable use policy, and I have done nothing to violate their terms of service. In fact, I did nothing at all except to be on the receiving end of a payment that Venmo erroneously flagged. I have a balance on my account that Venmo will not return to me.

Following the session, my client paid me ( {$400.00} for the session fee and a {$60.00} tip to cover gas/travel ) and when I logged into my PayPal account I see that the amount is in hold. PayPal charged me their fees of {$16.00} ( robbery ) and then held the remainder stating that because I did not regularly do 10 transactions a month they have the right to hold my funds for XXXX XXXX XXXX I depend on payment to cover things like travel to/from sessions, pay for the things I may have used/equipment rented etc. On my Paypal dashboard it gave me ways to get paid faster such as updating my contact info, adding my ssn, etc. I have since completed ALL of the requested items yet am still being told that because my account is " new '' my funds will be held to protect PayPal against chargebacks etc. The client has paid, she tipped me {$60.00} and she received the service. There is no risk to a chargeback. I am due my funds and PayPal has no viable reason to hold my money. This is putting my family in a financial strain as I can't meet my obligations and run my business. Why would anyone continue to do business with a company that oversteps such boundaries? I am a photographer and not all of my clients pay via PayPal- some write checks, some pay cash - I am never guaranteed to make 10 transactions via PayPal a month to meet the standards of what they are considering a " trusted seller ''. This is largely unethical and all I want is my money and then I will remove PayPal from my website and cease to business with them again.

They then requested I confirm my identity by sending in a picture of my drivers license. I then complied and received another email stating they were reviewing the case. On XX/XX/XXXX I received a new email which stated " Thank you for contacting us. After reviewing your account, we have determined that it is not eligible for reactivation due to several concerns regarding your activity. We informed you about this decision on XX/XX/XXXX. Your account has been permanently deactivated and we regret to inform you that we can no longer offer you the Venmo service. We do not make these decisions lightly, and when we do it is to help improve the safety of the Venmo community.. Please be aware that any future contact or inquiries will not be answered and that this matter will be considered closed upon your receipt of this email. Thank you for your understanding.
