Issue: Struggling to repay your loan

Subissue: Problem lowering your monthly payments

Consumer Complaint: I have attempted over the last year to come up with a payment plan that I can afford for my private student loans with navient to no avail. Earlier in XX/XX/XXXX they were harassing me with multiple phone calls daily and when I had gotten in touch with them they would suggest a monthly payment that I couldn't possibly afford resulting in a delinquent account. I'd be quoted a monthly repayment one day and 2 days later it would be something totally different. This went on for months. In XX/XX/XXXX we finally agreed to {$230.00} monthly payment which I have been struggling but nevertheless making. I'm now told that my payment will increase beginning in XX/XX/XXXX. I have called them and they are unwilling to work with me on a plan that I can afford. They seem to have a nonchalant attitude. I want it to be clear that I'm not shying away from the responsibility of my private loans. I do have Federal loans which is also in repayment based on my income. But their customer service is at best poor and they way I've been treated is atrocious. Not certain if they treat all their customers the same way or just those with immigrant names.

Issue: Incorrect information on your report

Subissue: Account status incorrect

Consumer Complaint: For the past 4 months, Navient has been reporting delinquent to all credit bureau on my student loans. However, I was placed in a payment plan back in XX/XX/XXXX for the amount of {$220.00}. I made a payment the day of the agreement to bring my account current. For the past 3-4 months, Navient has withdrew the amount of {$220.00} on XX/XX/XXXX, XX/XX/XXXX, XX/XX/XXXX and XX/XX/XXXX. For those consecutive months, I've been getting hit with negative points on my XXXX. I called to investigate and supposedly I was kicked out the program and arrangement I had made but yet money was still being taken out my account. My question is why would they continue to take money out my account if I was taken out the arrangement that was made for the {$220.00}? So I decided to STOP all payment to Navient until the issue is solve. Either way my XXXX is suffering. I think it's unfair and bad business practice. The whole point of me making the payments is to help my cripple credit score in the first place. So unfair!!!

Issue: Struggling to repay your loan

Subissue: Can't get other flexible options for repaying your loan

Consumer Complaint: On XX/XX/2019, Navient called to collect on my student loan and I explained that I don't have any money. They said that the only repayment option for me was to pay {$50.00} before they could defer my payments. I asked to speak with a supervisor and the supervisor was even less forthcoming with options for deferment or repayment. He offered my no options, the only option he offered was repayment. He did say they would stop the phone calls but that was all they could do. I then went online and saw that there was an option for deferment that required no payment upfront. I have deferred loans in the past and I have never been told that I have to pay before they would defer my loans.

Issue: Dealing with your lender or servicer

Subissue: Received bad information about your loan

Consumer Complaint: My federal subsidized and unsubsidized student loans ( 6 total loans, 3 subsididized, 3 unsubsidized ) have transferred administration twice, and have been with Navient for a few years. I have religiously paid over the amount of my monthly payment after capitalized interest affected my account. However, the amount that I owe monthly increases every six months, and I am not able to get my online account to match the tax statements sent yearly. See below running total for XX/XX/XXXX alone - after logging in 4 times, my total balance has changed each time. When I have asked for a physical statement in the mail that showed my running balance over time, I received one that did not show my running balance. When I called to ask how my capitalized interest payments were applied, I was told that my principle amount was decreasing slowly, but steadily, and that my payments fluctuated based on the current market. Issue: Dealing with your lender or servicer

Subissue: Received bad information about your loan

Consumer Complaint: When I graduated from XXXX school in XX/XX/XXXX, I had accrued {$93000.00} in student loan debt ( combined federal and private, both serviced by Navient until XX/XX/XXXX, which is when my federal loans went to XXXX XXXX ). From XX/XX/XXXX to XX/XX/XXXX, I was a XXXX XXXX XXXX serving abroad. As XXXX don't make money, I contacted Navient for help. They told me XXXX aren't eligible for any kind of loan deferment, but I could go on an IBR plan that would be {$0.00} given my income of {$0.00}. I tried to do just that. I uploaded the proof of service to Navient 's website over and over again. I called them over and over again and they tell me the same thing : upload this public service form and everything will get sorted out. Finally, I figured out that I was egregiously behind on payments because of how long this was taking. I call them again and they tell me ( FINALLY ) that they actually need a pay stub to prove my current XXXX service. I explain that XXXX do not get pay stubs because we do not get paid. Period. They then told me my only option was forbearance. I went into forbearance for over two years. To give you an idea of the catastrophic damage this has done to my life, let me show you these numbers : I borrowed about {$93000.00}, I have since paid back over {$32000.00}, and now I currently owe over {$100000.00}. Navient put me in this hole on purpose. When I returned and got a job with the XXXX XXXX in XX/XX/XXXX, I had my federal loans go to XXXX XXXX, but my problems with Navient continue. My private loans are still serviced by them and they have been playing dirty business tactics. I submitted two payments to Navient in XX/XX/XXXX ( despite being a XXXX XXXX XXXX at the time ). I got confirmation emails that both payments were received. My online account on Navient 's website says both payments were received. It still says that right now. But today I got a call from Navient saying those payments didn't work and now I had late fees associated with it. This is dirty, dirty, dirty. I sent screenshots to Navient showing that my account with them says the payments went through, but they maintain that I should have figured out that their website is garbage.

Issue: Communication tactics

Subissue: You told them to stop contacting you, but they keep trying

Consumer Complaint: I have attempted to get an income based payment plan for my private student loan with Navient. I want to pay but I can not afford to pay $ XXXX+ each month. I was on the program before but when a year went by, I was told I could no longer be on that program because it was for one year only. I had a hard time making my XX/XX/XXXX/XX/XX/XXXX payment. I called in on XX/XX/2019 trying to see what options I had. I was told that because I could not make a payment in XX/XX/XXXX, to call back on XX/XX/XXXX and they could see what we could do. Navient has been calling both me and my parents 6-7 times per day harassing us because the payment has not been made. I called in again and spoke to another individual. I told him to stop calling us because it was harassment. He then fired back that, " We can call you as many times as we want. '' When I asked him to at least stop calling my parents, he said, " We can call who we want as many times as we want. '' This is just pathetic. When I have issues with my Federal Loans, they take the time to help me and figure out what to do next. Navient as a company is a BULLY. I don't appreciate being harassed and I want it to stop. I'm willing to pay my loan ( I have to ) but they should work with me in my current financial situation. Even if I could just get it down to {$100.00} per month. That would help a great deal ... but the harassment needs to stop now

Issue: Dealing with your lender or servicer

Subissue: Received bad information about your loan

Consumer Complaint: In XX/XX/XXXX I requested information regarding an income based repayment plan with Navient in order to address my student loan balance which is currently a little over {$26000.00}. Prior to XX/XX/XXXX I had no idea an income based repayment plan was available to me as I was always " suggested '' to me by Navient that I choose forbearance. Forbearance has consistently been the option provided to me from Navient whether in email form OR during phone calls over the lifetime of my loans. At NO time prior to XX/XX/XXXX was any other payment option explained to me. I only learned about income based repayment plans via research, then looking at the Navient website. I applied for the income based plan in XX/XX/XXXX but was NEVER told to submit any documents at the time the initial phone call was made. After not hearing from Navient I called again and was told I needed to supply documents verifying my low income, which I did immediately. After supplying the required documents, I was never notified regarding any updates to my account and was forced to call Navient repeatedly in an attempt to get more information. The information I received during each call was inconsistent and different depending on the individual I spoke with. Or, I was told the documents were STILL under review, no decision had been made, and to call back again at a later time. Within the last month I called again ( and spoke with a male operator ) in order to provide Navient with updated information related to my income and to check the status of my account. This individual told me that the documentation I sent in originally during the fall was incorrect, and that this was why I had not been notified of any changes. Therefore nothing had been filed, updated nor any information provided to me via email or phone call. This indivudal was rude, impatient, short, and unhelpful. I hung up on this individual because he was so disrespectful and did not provide me with any new information other than telling me I needed to start the application process all over again. Had I not called, I would've assumed my application was still under review. Keep in mind I requested an income based repayment plan last fall in order to have a financial plan in place BEFORE my XX/XX/XXXX payment was due. Just prior to my request for an income based payment plan I went through bankruptcy ( in XX/XX/XXXX ) due to my divorce. After bankruptcy I continued to struggle financially as I tried to find employment, so I contacted Navient and was simply told to utilize forebearance. An income based plan was not given to me as an option and as a result, my most recent forbearance was placed on my credit report, right after bankruptcy, without any warning being provided to me that it would impact my credit. Had I known it would impact my credit I would've denied the forebearance option entirely. As of today, XX/XX/XXXX I called Navient again. I have a XX/XX/XXXX payment due of {$180.00} which I CAN NOT afford. Today I was informed by the operator I spoke with that she can not see why my application has NOT been processed, and also informed me that she can not see any reason why it would be denied. She then stated she is going to request to have my application expedited. I was told to contact Navient on XX/XX/XXXX, ONE DAY before my payment is due, in order to follow up on my application AGAIN. When I asked what would happen if this was not taken care of or approved before XX/XX/XXXX, I was told my account would be placed into " courtesy forebearance '' until my application could be reviewed. I immediately stated I did NOT want my loans placed into forebearance again, at which time I was informed this forebearance is DIFFERENT from regular forebearance. And that it will not be placed on my credit report. Once again, I am being told my application is under review. I have contacted Navient repeatedly since the fall of XXXX, in good faith, in an attempt to take care of my student loan debt. Each time my requests have been ignored, I've been given inaccurate information, or NOT provided with information or follow up regarding my complaints that would've helped me take care of my debt in a timely fashion. I am especially angry that I was told to choose forebearance rather than given ANY OTHER options related to repayment. I trusted Navient. I truly believe Navient willfully withheld information from me related to other payment options when they suggested I use forbearance repeatedly. I do have emails related to suggestions of forbearance and welcome anyone to listen to the phone calls related to my account questions and issues.

Consumer Complaint: I was a recipient of a lawsuit against Navient for overcharging veterans interest, which was settled in 2015 with Navient being at fault. The settlement was given directly to Navient. I was in no way informed by Navient. The balance in the amount of approx {$35000.00} was not updated on my account and I was not notified by mail or email or telephone. I was not aware of the lawsuit until the IRS informed me that I owed back taxes in the amount of approx. {$11000.00}, which I am being charged penalties on in excess of my monthly payment. It was a difficult and confusing process to get the information from Navient customer service. They were finally able to locate the sum, but the records available still leave me confused.
