Issue: Dealing with your lender or servicer
Subissue: Received bad information about your loan
Consumer Complaint: My name is XXXX XXXX and I have an issue with Navient. I requested a refund on my payments made from XXXX through XXXX when I paid off my loan, I didn't realize these loans were in forbearance and I didn't have to make the payments. I researched and found out I can receive a refund for these amounts paid. I called Navient and spoke with multiple employees and they told me I'm unable to receive any refund, but they couldn't give me a reason why. My number is XXXX, please let me know if you need any additional information. XXXX XXXX

Consumer Complaint: My husband and I had two federal XXXX school loans beginning when we both graduated in XXXX and XXXX respectively. These loans ended up being changed to different repayment plans several different times over the years in an ongoing effort to both afford the payments and get them paid off as efficiently as possible ( keeping interest we pay over the life of the loan down ) as we worked and raised our family. I have an XXXX XXXX XXXX. degree and a XXXX XXXX XXXX in the XXXX XXXX XXXX. I have worked in the XXXX XXXX, XXXX ( for a XXXX XXXX ), and have run my own business for 22 years. I currently have a XXXX score of XXXX. I'm not naive or unskilled in managing money. I am quite confident in my administrative and bookkeeping skills. Well ... ..when I would responsibly call in to my servicer ( Sallie Mae , then Navient ) over the years to find a better deal and keep it a federally owned loan, they purposely misinformed me, lied and steered me into loans that not only WERE commercially owned ( which I told them repeatedly I did not want ) but that screwed us over in terms of how much interest we were paying over the life of the loan. And it happened right over the phone. Extremely dishonest and confusing for borrowers what was actually happening until it was already done -- over the phone. The original consolidation loan amount on our two loans was a little over $ XXXX, and 23 years later we're still paying $ XXXX monthly and have over $ XXXX ( and 5 years ) left on the two loans and have paid out {$11000.00} in interest on top of {$17000.00} in principal on the first loan ( {$29000.00} in payments for original loan of {$22000.00} ) and {$4700.00} in interest and {$7000.00} in principal on the second loan ( {$11000.00} in payments on original loan of {$9100.00} ). So we've paid {$41000.00} in payments for an original loan balance of just over {$31000.00}. We were purposely misled and it was all so confusing when I would call, and they would just change the loan type over the phone by saying we'd be " saving $ -- -- in interest by switching to this loan '' and would get a rate decrease etc and my mistake was trusting them to be honest with me in trying to help us not pay out so much more than we needed to. We were capable of paying out more to shorten the life of the loan. We only needed one pause on payments due to a job loss back in XXXX when we struggled financially for a couple of years. After Biden 's announcement this week on loan forgiveness, I confirmed that we have federal FFELP loans ( commercially owned ) and that's why we had to pay every month during the federal student loan pause during the pandemic, and why we can't get our loan forgiven under the Biden plan because it's commercially owned -- but that there will be an IDR adjustment made to hopefully help people like me and my husband who were basically swindled and steered in the exact opposite direction than we told our servicer we wanted to go with our loans. So, yesterday I applied to consolidate our Navient owned loans into a federal IDR loan so that maybe we can have some relief in the upcoming IDR adjustment to help account for what these servicers have done to us financially. They essentially took advantage of our trust and robbed us. We expect to pay some interest on a loan, but this has been ridiculous. I emailed Navient today that I applied for IDR loan yesterday ( spouse co-signed ) and that I expect them to process it expeditiously ( within 10 business days, as the Rep told me ). Thank you for listening to our story.

Consumer Complaint: I have attached the letter I sent to Navient asking to accept an offer to forgive the remaining balance on my loan. I believe from the outset I was not giving options that would have kept the balance of my loan from ballooning to where it is today. Instead of forbearance for a few years which ended up costing me tens of thousands of dollars, they could have directed me or at least offered me Income based repayments that would have at the time kept my balance at a manageable level. My original loan which started at approximately XXXX XXXX has grown to XXXX XXXX and continues to grow. I have paid back over XXXX XXXX since repayment started. The capitalized interest has destroyed my hopes of paying this loan off. I wasn't even afforded the ability during the pandemic to pause my loans or have the XXXX per month payment I've been sending go towards the principle balance. I feel Navient is and has been a predatory lender with regards to my loans and hope that at some point they are held accountable. They have been sending me mailings to change my loan to a private loan at a reduced interest rate for months now. Once again predatory in nature.

Consumer Complaint: I signed for a Parent Plus loan at XXXX XXXX in school years XXXX and XXXX for my son. Yet, Navient closed the Parent Plus account and gave me a Signature Loan? As a matter of fact, the activity page indicates Parent Plus, which, by the way, through no knowledge or permission from me, was consolidated at a XXXX balance. I do not understand why I would consolidate a Parent Plus loan at a lower interest in exchange for a Signature Loan at a higher interest rate. I signed for the Parent Plus loan in person in XXXX. Yet, Navient writes : Your cosigned loans ending in XXXX and XXXX have been Signature Student Loans since they were disbursed. Now Im referred to XXXX that do not have the cosigned loans listed. Im getting the run around. I want to take advantage of recent government student loan options before the deadline.

Consumer Complaint: I was notified through the mail that I might be eligible for Student Loan Forgiveness program. I filed the necessary paperwork, but did not hear back with the XXXX. So I called my loan servicer, Navient. There was an option to speak with someone about loan forgiveness, so I pushed that button & was transferred to a third party company who said they could file my paperwork for me. The name of the company is XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX, and their charge came out of my back under the name XXXX XXXX XXXX. I immediately got an email from the Department of Education saying there has been suspicious activity on my account and that I may have paid for a service that I could do for free. This third party, who I was referred to by Navient was in fact fraudulent. When I confronted them, they screened my calls, denied they were frauds & said they would not return my money to me because they had filed my consolidation forms. Had I not pressed the button when reaching out to Navient, I would still have that money in my possession.

Consumer Complaint: On XX/XX/2020 I contacted Navient about my consolidated FFELP student loans. I inquired about the zero percent interest rate reduction due to the pandemic. I received a response that I did not quality. I was not informed that I needed to transfer my loans to the direct consolidation loan program to quality. As a result they have collected interest on loans and I have incurred additional debt that could have been avoided had I been informed of my loan options.
