Issue: Managing an account

Subissue: Deposits and withdrawals

Consumer Complaint: This has been an ongoing problem for months. Just XXXX alone it happened 5 times ( XXXX, XXXX, XXXX, XX/XX/XXXX, XX/XX/XXXX ). I am unable to use XXXX which M & T bank themselves encourages rather than traditional transfers without my transaction being flagged and blocked by their security. I call them everytime and they end up having to override it. On XX/XX/XXXX I was told they are unable to override it. I informed them that I am closing my accounts with them. I do not work XXXX XXXX XXXX so they can hold my money hostage.

Subissue: Investigation took more than 30 days

Consumer Complaint: Good Morning ; I'm not sure what's going on with M & T Bank, i had called them before and i received my title for the vehicle. Why it showing that i was late on XX/XX/2020. That doesn't make sense if they received the last payment since XXXX and sent me my title. I have been trying now to fix this late payment since then and it's taken more than 60 days to get a response and it's still not fixed. I am not sure how this happened, I believe that I had made my payments to you when I received my statements. My only thought is that my monthly statement did not get to me, or the payment was not applied as fast as expected. I check my bank account and noticed that you deducted the money out of my checking account that on the month that you marked me late on my credit report.

Issue: Trouble during payment process

Subissue:

Consumer Complaint: M & T Bank is very aggressively attempting to force place insurance on my property. They have now moved to retroactive insurance. This time, they are specifically attempting to force place retroactive insurance because I allegedly did not have the correct type of insurance from XX/XX/2020 to XX/XX/2020. They are threatening to buy insurance for me that they claim is much more expensive than my insurance and may cover much less. There is no date listed by which I have to fix this issue. They simply state that it must be done immediately. I just got this in the mail today and will call my insurance tomorrow to fix it in order to avoid them buying insurance for me, as I have done the dozen other times this has happened. I get a harassing letter from M & T Bank like this about every 2-3 weeks. I have threats to force place insurance because my coverage wasn't high enough. It was high enough and my insurance company sent them a copy of the state law to show it was high enough. I got a threat to force place coverage because the unit number was missing from my address. I had my insurance company humor them by sending a copy and making sure it had the unit number. Then I got another harassing letter saying now that there is a unit number on my insurance, it isn't valid because it doesn't match the address they have on file because it doesn't have a unit number. I got a harassing letter saying I needed to have a different type of coverage. I switched to they type of coverage. I actually didn't mind because it ended up saving me money. Now they're asking for retroactive coverage for that different type of insurance because they don't have proof that I had that specific type of insurance between XX/XX/2020 and XX/XX/2020. I'll fix this issue immediately and I'm sure they'll come up with another reason to threaten me with force placed insurance. I did some research and it looks like that have had several class action lawsuits for exactly this and it looks like they're doing it again. One additional detail worth mentioning is that federal law requires that if a company is going to force place insurance they must provide a warning 45 days in advance and a second 30 days later and 15 days before purchasing the insurance. Since this is the second notice, my guess is they're using that XX/XX/2020 and XX/XX/2020 to get around that. My worry is that even though I will fix it tomorrow, they could just as easily pick another random set of dates in 15 days. Why are they allowed to do this to people?

Issue: Closing on a mortgage

Subissue:

Consumer Complaint: I was approved for a VA home loan from M & T Bank in XX/XX/2020 for XXXX. We found the house we wanted for XXXX and The total loan would be around XXXX. Before the appraisal we where told that there might be issues with the VA approving the loan for a modular/ manufactured home, and the VA exception board would have to approve the loan, and it could take up to 10 business days to hear a reply after the underwriter received the appraisal and submitted the paperwork to the exception board. We had a VA loan before and where certain that The VA would approve our loan. We asked that they go ahead with the appraisal. My wife received a call from M & T Bank expressing that the appraisal would not be covered by closing cost and we would have to pay out of pocket XXXX for the appraisal before they could order it. I gave the person my CC number and the transaction should showed up as processing the next day, but never showed as a complete transaction on my statement. The appraisal was done and turned in on XX/XX/2020. I only just now received a copy in XX/XX/2020. We repeatedly asked for a copy of the appraisal to give to the seller who also had not received a copy. They told us that only the underwriter could view the appraisal. Only after M & T Bank Officially turned down our loan on XX/XX/2020. That we found out M & T Bank does not approve manufactured home loans of any kind, on XX/XX/2020, it was the M & T Bank exceptions board not the VA that had to approve the loan. On XX/XX/2020. We received a call from the loan officer saying the loan had been declined. We Really liked the house so we went with a new lender on XX/XX/2020 and requested the Appraisal be forwarded to the new lender. The new lender and myself repeatedly contacted M & T Bank and requested Access to the appraisal via the LINN. We received no response. The new lender had there or corporate get involved before we received any kind of reply on XX/XX/2020. It still took them till XX/XX/2020 for us to access the appraisal. Only after they informed us via phone call that we would not be receiving the LINN number till they received the check from my current lender to pay for the appraisal. Of course the payment was for the VA, who had locked to appraisal till it was paid for. Which I have been told by the VA that is not true.

Issue: Closing an account

Subissue: Fees charged for closing account

Consumer Complaint: I had 3 savings accounts with M & T Bank. On XX/XX/2020 I had all the funds of the accounts transferred to another financial institution. The interest earned on the accounts from XX/XX/2020 to XX/XX/2020 and posted on XX/XX/2020 was : Account 1 - {$.00} Account 2 - {$.00} Account 3 - {$.00} Total {$.00} Instead of closing the accounts and sending me a check for XXXX cents, the bank charged me {$45.00} in fees for Account 1 ( {$30.00} ) and Account 2 ( {$15.00} ) - Account 3 was not charged bank fees but remains open with a {$.00} balance. I have written the bank twice - once in early XX/XX/2020 after seeing the {$45.00} of bank charges on the XX/XX/2020 electronic bank statements, and then in XX/XX/2020 after not receiving any response from the Bank in regards to the requests in my XXXX correspondence - specifically asking M & T to rectify the situation by reversing the fees, sending me the accrued interest and closing all the 3 accounts. M & T has not responded to my request ( positive or negative ) but recently sent me month-end XXXX Statements which indicates that M & T has credited Account 1 & Account 2 ( total of {$44.00} ) for the difference between the inappropriate fees ( total of {$45.00} ) they previously charged my accounts and the interest earned ( {$.00} ) from XX/XX/XXXX to XX/XX/XXXX, resulting in XXXX balances for Account 1 and Account 2.The troubling part is they call the credits " Collection Account Fee, '' which has me very concerned they may be attempting to inappropriately soil my credit record due to their incompetence. In addition, they continue to ignore my request to close Account 3 with a remaining balance of {$.00}. Since the bank will not communicate directly with me and it appears they do whatever they want to do, I have no choice but to lodge a complaint.

Issue: Trouble during payment process

Subissue:

Consumer Complaint: We had a water damage claim on XXXX and part of our insurance checks included our mortgage company ( M & T Bank ), so we mailed the two checks along with the XXXX XXXX claims repair estimate ( overnight with a prepaid overnight envelope to expedite the return of the funds ) for {$1700.00} and {$13000.00}, so they could endorse them and return them to us, so we could pay our contractor to make the repairs. They sent us the endorsed checks and no other forms were needed, I even called to verify. It seemed simple, even though we had to go out of our way to send them the checks ( the adjuster said most mortgage companies are not requiring this right now due to COVID, but for some reason, this company is ). When our contractor was finished with the repairs, we notified our insurance company, so we could obtain the additional funds for depreciation, which is an additional {$6300.00} ( which also has the mortgage company listed as payee ). We sent the check 2 day mail once received on XXXX, thinking it would be returned in quick manor like the two previous checks. I received a text notification that documents were received by M & T bank on XXXX. I checked and nothing was mentioned about the check, so I called on XXXX and was notified I needed to have my contractor sign a few documents, and they needed a copy of the contract signed by the contractor, my husband, and myself. This was NEVER mentioned before when they returned the two previous checks ... that document notification was turned off, so I did not bother to get those documents signed. And we did not receive any text notifications, emails, or phone calls saying these documents were missing. The lady had no remorse and said it is what it is, because now our claims is over {$20000.00} ( side note ... it has always been over that amount ). Unacceptable business practice! The work is now complete ... we had to get a loan from our credit union to finish paying our contractor, because M & T Bank will not release the {$6300.00} that they are listed as a joint payee on, from XXXX XXXX ( the check is endorsed to XXXX and XXXX XXXX, and M & T Bank ). I found the forms and had our contractor complete what was needed, and we signed the original contract ( as per request from the phone conversation with M & T Bank on XXXX ), and attached them to the link that was shared with us on XXXX. We received a notification that they received the documents, and when I checked the status, the documents were denied. I immediately called their customer service number at XXXX CT tonight and a was being helped by XXXX XXXX She was reviewing documents and during this time, and said something was missing. I explained the work is complete, our contractor completed the waiver and shared is Tax ID details, and all parties have signed the contract. She said it had something to do with how their system was reading the documents. I asked what I needed to do so they could release our funds and the phone call ended. In the beginning, she verified a good call back number, so I expected her to call me back, but it has been 30 minutes and I have not received another phone call. They closed at XXXX ET ... M & T Bank is holding our funds hostage for no reason. The repairs are complete and we need this check endorsed by them and immediately returned to us. This process with them has been a nightmare these past two weeks. Please help us! Thank you so much!!!

Issue: Incorrect information on your report

Subissue: Account status incorrect

Consumer Complaint: XXXX XXXX XXXX M & T Bank Account Number : XXXX Home Address : XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX, MD XXXX I called M & T bank in XXXX between the XXXX and the XXXX. I requested and was approved for a loan extension for the months of XXXX and XXXX. I was told that I will receive the documents to sign via USPS mail. I received the documentation on XX/XX/2020. I signed the documentation, scanned it and sent it to the email provided on the paper. Today XX/XX/2020 I get a notification that M & T bank has reported me 30 days late for the month of XXXX. In addition to me being approved and submitting loan documentation my XXXX payment is NOT 30 days late at this current time. My XXXX payment is due on XX/XX/XXXX and today is XX/XX/XXXX which is ONLY 25 days. There is no reason for me to be 30 days late at this current time ( especially since an extension was granted ). Attached are : Screenshot of submitted email, screenshot showing 30 days late on my credit. Also the approved and signed extension agreement. This brings me to my next point. This bank does anything to suppress and attack XXXX XXXX. I have reported them over and over for interactions like this and in-person interactions at the local branches. It's obvious to me that local, state, and federal officials are in bed with M & T. When I complain M & T responds by retaliating. I am sick and tired of this crime syndicate, what it represents and the poison that it spreads. I've said it before and i'll say it again. This organization is run by XXXX XXXX.
