Issue: Getting a credit card
Subissue: Card opened without my consent or knowledge
Consumer Complaint: Last night, I performed a routine credit check on myself and discovered that my normally high ( XXXX ) XXXX XXXX had dipped significantly down to XXXX. I was shocked. Especially when I saw that a CapitalOne Credit card account had been opened in my name back in XX/XX/XXXX. I have never had any type of relationship with CapitolOne and never established credit card there. CapitolOne never reached out to notify me that an account was created. Nor to verify if I was the one who had actually established this account. CapitolOne informed me that an individual had used my social security number and my birthday which was used to open the account. Apparently, this individual charged over {$9500.00} and never paid it down. Why I wouldn't have been contacted after the first missed payment is baffling to me. CapitalOne then closed the account in XX/XX/XXXX ( again, no one contacted me regarding this account. After calling CapitalOne today, they informed me of the details that were used to open my account ( the email, phone number and address did not belong to me ). I have impeccable credit and have a long history of always paying my credit cards. This has been incredibly stressful for me as I am about to move apartments and need my high credit score to do so. If possible I would like this matter expedited as I am currently not able to move apartments until this is cleared up.
