Issue: Dealing with your lender or servicer
Subissue: Trouble with how payments are being handled
Consumer Complaint: On XX/XX/2018, Navient took {$410.00} out of my account when they were only supposed to take out {$240.00}. When I contacted Navient I was told I had to prove that amount was taken out and that it would take 10 to 12 business days for me to receive my money. Even though they made the error, I had to do the work to get my money back and then it would take almost two weeks for me to receive what Navient took in error. On XX/XX/2018 I received {$160.00}, the difference of what I owed for my monthly payment. I received my money 14 days after Navient took it. On XX/XX/2018, I spoke with a customer service representative from Navient. I asked for my payment for the month of XX/XX/XXXX to be taken out on XX/XX/18 instead of XX/XX/18. He made the change for me and then re-entered me into the income based repayment program. I was told my new monthly payment would be {$330.00}. I was also told that my XX/XX/XXXX payment would come out on XX/XX/XXXX and that it would be {$330.00}. I woke up on XX/XX/2018, to find that {$410.00} had been taken out of my account from Navient, I was overdrawn on my bank account, and my bank had charged my the {$35.00} overdraft fee. This is the second month in a row that Navient has made an error regarding my account. Now it will take another " 10 to 12 business days '' for account to be credited and I have to prove to Navient that they took it, and once again, do all of the work to get my money back, which they took in error.

Consumer Complaint: Navient has continuously harassed, lied and pushed me into forbearance. I had my student loans with them since they took them over nearly 10 years ago. I have more than $ XXXX in student loans and I was forced into consolidating them with another company. Unbeknownst to me, I was bombarded with refinance/consolidation letters from a few companies, but it was always this one company called XXXX. When I was receiving the letters, I was never told that Navient owned XXXX. When I requested my loan promissory notes, they told me to do it online, yet you can not. My biggest concern is that Navient has essentially coerced me and many others into believing they could get student loan help by using this other company XXXX. But, they own the company they are telling you to move to. What a bunch of bull.

Subissue: Problem lowering your monthly payments
Consumer Complaint: The person who helped me with navient, instead of helping me lower monthy payments told me it was a better idea to use forebearance or deferment. Happened the 2nd time I did it as well. Both times I was told my loans would be placed on hold. However, they still accrued interest. I have tried getting monthy amount lowered but they said they can not go any lower and I can not afford that amount.

Consumer Complaint: My original principal balance was {$58000.00} beginning XX/XX/2007 with a fixed interest rate of 7.5 %. I have filed a few forbearances over the years due to hardships ; but was not offered income based repayment plan options until this year. However, since XX/XX/2007, I have paid {$30000.00} in interest and {$6700.00} towards the principal. My account balance is currently {$73000.00}, which is {$15000.00} higher than my original principal. When you file for a forbearance due to hardship, instead of Navient just allowing the interest to accrue during that time period, they add the interest to the principal and then charge you interest on the interest added principal amount. The forbearance does not help but hurt borrowers. I have tried to negotiate the account balance because I have paid {$36000.00} on a {$58000.00} loan and now owe {$73000.00} which only causes the payments to go up and not down. I think this is truly an unfair practice and makes it extremely difficult to pay the loan. Navient did not offer any help in resolving this matter.

Consumer Complaint: They are calling very frequently about a past Student Loan balance, and are threatening legal action. I used to let the calls go to voicemail, now I block the number, but they keep calling from different numbers, some with the same first six numbers of my phone number in an effort to trick me into thinking that it is a local call.

Subissue: Can't temporarily delay making payments
Consumer Complaint: Hello, I am a recent graduate who started the XXXX fellowship beginning XX/XX/2018. I was trying to defer my loans as most of my colleagues did as we don't get paid full salary. I called Navient several times to make sure I could qualify for deferral. The issue is that in their application form they require to have a XXXX XXXX degree to defer the loans. I graduated with XXXX degree, XXXX XXXX degree and my XXXX degree. XXXX XXXX was the one I was able to skip using my XXXX XXXX as a prerequisite and get my other degrees. When I called the first time, they told me there was no issues as my degrees considered to be higher than XXXX XXXX. I filled out the form through my fellowship program but was denied saying that my program begin date was more than 30 days in the future and I needed to resubmit my request within 30 days of the program start date. That didn't make sense as I was several weeks into the program. When I call back, I had another conversation with a different person who said that was a mistake in the system, but I still didn't qualify because my fellowship was different from other fellowships. If that would be a fellowship or residency in the hospital, that would be ok. I don't see what is the difference because we all make post-doc salary no matter where we work. They told me I should try income-based payments. I called the third person a little later. They were ignorant and told me that I wouldn't be able to get XXXX XXXX degree without my XXXX XXXX. I am completely lost. Everyone is providing different information. I eventually requested the income-based repayment and of course it was approved with much higher payment that I could comfortably afford. I just want to find out if there's a person who can tell me for sure who is right and what I am eligible for in that company. Thank you in advance for your help!
