Issue: Opening an account
Subissue: Account opened as a result of fraud
Consumer Complaint: On XX/XX/XXXX, I received an email ( in the middle of the night ) stating my online application for a new Bank of America checking account was in process, then received subsequent emails about my application, verifying email, etc. I called Bank of America Fraud department and opened a case the next day, was given a case number, and told this happens often but they would follow up. I froze my credit and put a fraud alert on my credit/SSN to be proactive. I never heard back from BoA. A month or so later, I got a bank statement for this account ( no activity on account ). In early XX/XX/XXXX, I had the same issue with opening a fake account in the middle of the night. I went to my local branch and they were not very helpful, stating I could not have any additional information on the account since I didn't open it. The branch manager said this happens a lot and the fake accounts are typically closed before the consumer is even aware that they were opened. OK, just a necessary evil it seems, especially since the accounts never have any activity ( no deposits or withdrawals ). Now on XX/XX/XXXX, I get yet another notification of a new account. By now I am desensitized and think these accounts will eventually just go away, so I ignored the email. Today I received a debit card for the account. I'm tired of wasting my valuable time pursuing this. If I call, it's at least 30 minutes to explain myself to the new person I've never talked to. If I go in, they give me no information. I have never received any follow up from the fraud case I have opened with them. I can not believe they can not block my social/email/something in their system for opening new accounts, as I will never knowingly do business with them after this.

Consumer Complaint: I signed up for a Bank of America XXXX XXXX XXXX Credit Card and was offered {$200.00} if I spent {$500.00} on this line of credit during my first 90 days of being a cardholder. Because of this, I ended up financially stretching myself because I wanted to receive the sign up offer. After completing the qualifying purchases and verifying with a banker, I was told the sign-up bonus was inbound. Of course, I never received it. I have contacted numerous BofA branches and they act like they do not know what I am talking about.

Consumer Complaint: This is from a previous complaint # XXXX. Bank of America took collection actions which included temporarily holding my direct deposit payroll funds from my checking account until the balance was paid in full. The Balance has been paid in full, but Bank of America has not released all of my funds that total more than {$3000.00} in intercepted payroll checks. My B of A account number is XXXX. I have attempted to contact Bank of America 's compliance department and was forwarded to a voicemail. I left several messages and sent emails to the compliance department.

Consumer Complaint: I had a XXXX Credit card with Bank of America. In XXXX of XXXX I used the card to purchase tickets on XXXX XXXX to and fro from XXXX to XXXX for me and my granddaughter. However after reaching XXXX I cancelled the return ticket. XXXX XXXX, as per their refund rules was supposed to give me credit of around {$2700.00} ( business class tickets ). However the payment made by XXXX XXXX XXXX ( USD ) in XXXX of XXXX was allowed by Bank of America to be withdrawn by them ( as per Bank of America when I enquired later ). After so many back and forth and me complaining to Department of Transportation XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX and with no luck, I closed my credit card account with Bank of America in XXXX of XXXX. DOT took up the matter with XXXX XXXX XXXX but with no luck. Finally, now XXXX XXXX has agreed to give back my money but requested that I get a letter from Bank of America that my account is closed and there are no balances. I requested Bank of America to send me such a letter last week. Alas, they are now sent me a letter that states that I have {$0.00} as balance in my account and my credit limit is etc. etc. instead of sending a letter that should clearly state that I closed my account with them. Now, I do not have an account with them but if I send the letter from Bank of America XXXX XXXX XXXX, they will then say that they have to send the refund to my credit card as it is not closed as per Bank of America letter. Looks like both Bank of America and XXXX XXXX XXXX are hands in glove in depriving my hard earned money.

Consumer Complaint: On XX/XX/XXXX I recieved an email from Bank of america letting me know my new debit card was on the way. I had not attempted to open a bank of america account although I've had them in the past as I worked for the bank. I immediately notified the fraud department and the account was closed Honestly I believe this was knowingly opened as fraud. The address they sent the card to was one I had not lived in since 2010. This is not the first time I've had this happen with bank of america. I've placed fraud remarks on my XXXX and credit reports.

Consumer Complaint: A credit card account was opened under my name with a {$29000.00} limit, and is currently on my credit report with a balance of {$3000.00} currently on it. I never opened an account or applied for a credit card with Bank of America. I contacted them a while back, and always got put on hold, or transferred to another department where nobody helped me. After about a year of trying to figure this out, I stopped trying due to frustration, and just decided to keep the balance current to avoid fees and penalties. I was going through a divorce and was having a lot of other things going on at the time, so it slipped my mind until I saw that Bank of America was being sued for opening up fake accounts, then everything made sense.
