Issue: Problem with a purchase or transfer
Subissue: Card company isn't resolving a dispute about a purchase or transfer
Consumer Complaint: I bought several thousand dollars in American Express Gift Cards ( XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX in XX/XX/2001. I received the gift cards directly from American Express unopened by mail. However, there are fraudulent charges on several of the cards ( e.g. ~ {$90.00} of charges, ~ {$97.00} of charges, and ~ {$50.00} of charges on three {$100.00} AMEX gift cards ). I also gave some gift cards away as gifts and several receipts reported that there were fraudulent charges as well. Overall, this has been a nightmare experience. I reached out the American Express to dispute the charges and get a refund. However, they claimed that refund is not possible and you must contact the merchant direction ( which is not a reasonable solution particularly for {$100.00} gift card ).

Issue: Advertising and marketing, including promotional offers
Subissue: Confusing or misleading advertising about the credit card
Consumer Complaint: I have an AMEX platnum card. The card gave me an offer that if I spent {$200.00} at XXXX XXXX I would get an {$80.00} credit. On XX/XX/XXXX, I stayed at the XXXX in XXXX Ohio for a total of {$250.00}. When I contacted AMEX, they advised me that in the terms, it states that the offer is only valid at 3 of the 18 XXXX XXXX ( excluding even XXXX XXXX properties ). I feel that it is exceptionally deceptive and unfair to offer a promotion and then limit it to less than 20 % of the hotel brands. Had this been more clear and transparent, I would have stayed at a less expensive hotel.

Consumer Complaint: Apparently there was a charge in XXXX for {$39.00}. I had stopped using American Express due to a poor customer experience. When I finally got a chance to call amex to follow up on why i was getting hassled by them via text, email, and 1 phone call it was too late. They already sent in the information. Because it was several months, amex has already changed me late fees and finance fees but apparently they were written off. As we all know they there are so many fraudulent activity actors in this world that i was hesitant in speaking to anyone via phone, clicking on a hyperlink sent by a fraudulent person or an email telling me to log on through the hyperlink. Amex has told me that because i choose paperless statements they were not allowed to send me a paper message about this charge that has not been paid for 3 months and that it was my choice to get the statements this way. I said to them-how is someone who understands fraud actually click on a hyperlink or give someone vital information on a phone call. I said if they had paper mailed to me their attempts to get a hold of me to see why I missed such a small amount considering my account has a {$40000.00} limit. Is it possible that i was unaware of this charge and that amex had not done enough to prevent my account being sent to collections and or missed payments to negatively affect my credit score. Then i tried to explain all of this ( what i am writing here ) and they said to me that they have been trying to get a hold of me for months. I just dont understand why they would not send me a paper notification as to what is happening within my account.

Issue: Fees or interest
Subissue: Charged too much interest
Consumer Complaint: On XX/XX/XXXX, I was charged {$16.00} interest by American Express on a {$680.00} balance for 6 days. American Express agreed that it should only be {$2.00} but they charged me for the whole billing period. American Express charges 22.49 % but, because they use the entire billing period, the actual interest rate is 10,909.55 % according to XXXX. The supervisor calculated it herself and said I should have been charged {$2.00} based on their disclosures.

Consumer Complaint: Ive did an application for a credit card XXXX XXXX XXXXXXXX and was rejected. Isnt my failed application a promissory note? So that means you can take my securities and sell them to a third party, therefor I shouldnt have been rejected. Then that means its securities fraud. Especially under an open-ended consumer credit plan.

Subissue: Problem with rewards from credit card
Consumer Complaint: I opened an account with American Express ( XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX ) in XXXX of XXXX. Part of the promotion they were offering was {$200.00} back if {$2000.00} was spent in the first 6 months. I met that requirement on my first transaction. In XXXX I contacted AMEX inquiring as to when the reward would be applied. I was told it would take 8-12 weeks. So I waited. I then contacted them again on XXXX making another inquiry. I was told that my account was a part of a group of accounts affected by an issue that was preventing bonuses to be applied. They opened a case # XXXX. So I waited again. I contacted them again on XXXX. I was then told that my investigation had been closed and my account was under review by a dedicated team. And a new case was opened. # XXXX. I was told to check back if I didn't see the {$200.00} credit in 10days. In this same conversation the rep said that the credit was to have been applied on XX/XX/XXXX and they also acknowledged that I in in fact had met the spend requirements to receive the credit. I then contacted them yesterday on XX/XX/XXXX. I was given the same runaround as before. That it was being looked into and addressed. I escalated to a supervisor and given the same cookie cutter replies. There was no attempt made to resolve the issue. This is horrible customer service and they are not honoring their end of the agreement/promotion. There appears to be some disconnect or worse ineptitude happening. I have been beyond patient. I am not the only one with this issue either. There are posts on XXXX about it.

Issue: Trouble using the card
Subissue: Trouble using the card to spend money in a store or online
Consumer Complaint: The card doesn't work in any common online vendors such as XXXX, XXXX, and XXXX. A XXXX cent processing fee still appeared to have gone through but the card was rejected regardless. American Express website won't display the balance of my card unless I click on the original gift card link sent to me from my company. This should be considered a scam.
