Consumer Complaint: I received an American Express Gift card in 2023 for {$100.00}. I was able to use it once on XXXX for a small purchase but it has been declined since. The balance on the card is {$83.00}. I did contact the company and they we going to send me a check. I have received no response. Bottom line is I have a useless gift card that can not be used even though it has a balance. I have spent hours on the phone trying to get help from American Express.

Issue: Fees or interest
Subissue: Problem with fees
Consumer Complaint: My payment was late one day ( due XX/XX/2023 but paid XX/XX/2023 because I forgot to schedule payment ) which led to a {$29.00} late fee and interest on the balance of {$43.00}. For a one day late payment that is a bit rich but okay I paid and request to have the late fee waived and ultimately get denied. Fine, I thought the issue is over. I see a new interest charge on XX/XX/XXXX due to this late payment which seems wrong so I ask for clarification. They tell me " Now whenever the statement balance is not received in full by the due date you loose 25 days grace period and the interest is billed on the new charges because of which 2nd interest of {$32.00} was billed. '' This is coded in vague language so I check my posted payment history and it is inconsistent with my scheduled payments ( {$1200.00} on their app versus {$1200.00} via email confirmation for payment due XX/XX/2023 ). Something is not right when a credit card company can charge two interest payments for a payment that is one day late ( and a manipulated payment amount that is inconsistent with my payment ). I have screenshots and other points of evidence that I can submit to show this credit card company needs to be reviewed for it's shady business practices.

Issue: Advertising and marketing, including promotional offers
Subissue: Confusing or misleading advertising about the credit card
Consumer Complaint: I received an American Express co-branded XXXX XXXX credit card referral on XX/XX/XXXX from a relative. The referral advertised XXXX bonus miles for signing up by XX/XX/XXXX and spending {$4000.00} within the first 6 months of card membership. I signed up for the credit card on XX/XX/XXXX. At the time of sign up a box appeared saying that the bonus was not applicable. This box was misleading as it appeared to indicate that the bonus to my referrer was not applicable, not the advertised bonus award of XXXX miles. I met the spending minimum for the credit card within 1 month of signing up. I called Amex in XXXX of XXXX to inquire about my bonus, at which point they told me that I was not applicable. I asked them to reevaluate given the misleading nature of the advertising. I followed up again with Amex who reiterated that I would not be granted a sign-up bonus despite the misleading advertising.

On XX/XX/26 I called the AMEX costumer service and they said my card was blocked, but I never used it on any suspicious websites. Consumer Complaint: American Express charged me a spurious {$15.00} penalty on a XXXX AMEX credit card after I had cancelled it and attempted to pay off a {$15.00} balance using my AMEX bank accounts! I cancelled my XXXX AMEX card XXXX XX/XX/2023. I sent the final payment balance of {$15.00} immediately from my AMEX XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX but the payment did not go through. AMEX instead tried to draw the payment from my AMEX checking account which did not have sufficient funds. Therefore the initial payment was rejected. After speaking with an agent approximately a 7 business days afterward ( upon discovering did not go through ), she assured me that I should transfer funds from the XXXX to checking and the system would automatically draw funds from checking, which eventually did happen. On XXXX XXXX, I discovered that AMEX charge me a Return Payment Fee of {$15.00}. I called AMEX and challenged this spurious charge. This so-called penalty fee is a classic example of consumer financial gouging. I have never had a late credit card payment in 30+ years of using credit cards. This over-charge is why the United States needs the CFPB to protect consumers against spurious fees in the age of frictionless transactions. I am willing to talk more to CFPB officials if requested to do so.
