Issue: Problem with a purchase shown on your statement

Subissue: Card was charged for something you did not purchase with the card

Consumer Complaint: On XX/XX/XXXX, I bought shoes on a scam website called XXXX. As soon as I submitted my credit card information I knew it was a scam because of the sketchy email. The charge that showed on my CC statement was " XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX {$180.00}. I submitted a dispute for that as it was a scam. On XX/XX/XXXX, the scammers attempted many many purchases through XXXX XXXX XXXX a few of the purchases were declined, but two purchases went through : - XXXX : {$2700.00} -XXXX : {$13000.00} The AMEX Fraud team called me themselves due to the suspicious activity. I said it was 100 % not me that made the purchases and it was fraud. They closed my credit card and sent me a new one and credited my account for the amount. On XX/XX/XXXX, the AMEX Fraud team called me and asked if I put my credit card information to the scam website I said that I did. They then rejected my Fraud Claim on the terms that I gave the website my information, and debited my account {$16000.00}. I 100000 % never made these purchases.

Issue: Communication tactics

Subissue: Frequent or repeated calls

Consumer Complaint: Previous options did not best describe scenario. I have received 3 letters from XXXX XXXX inviting me to speak to them about hardship due to Pandemic. When I call, I am not allowed to speak to them, I am transferred back to debt collection and say im not allowed to speak to any other department. Authenticity of the letter was challenged and I was told to scan and send document, which I did. They have not responded. I am willfully being denied my consumer right to speak to any department at American Express, on more than 2 occasions. This is against FCRA rules. By the way, American Express raised my credit limit twice without my consent. this was a contributing factor to my situation.

Issue: Trouble using the card

Subissue: Trouble using the card to spend money in a store or online

Consumer Complaint: The card was bought from XXXX 's and then gifted to me on the same day, XX/XX/XXXX. I only recently found it in my room, untouched. On XX/XX/XXXX, I tried to buy a digital camera on XXXX and the purchase did not go through even after multiple attempts. The message I received from XXXX was " Please use a different card or check your balance. '' I checked that my information was correct multiple times. I then went to the AmEx gift card balance site to check my balance. I put in the card 's information and saw that it was active and had {$50.00} on it. Over the next two days, I tried to buy fast food ( XXXX 's and XXXX XXXX for pickup on my phone with the card. These purchases also did not go through. Today ( XX/XX/XXXX ), I called the number on the back of the card ( XXXX ) and was connected to a machine that only gave me my balance and had pre-loaded FAQs that were played to me. On this call, I was told my balance had gone down to {$49.00}. I went to the website to check my balance and see where the XXXX charge came from, and it was " XXXXXXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX, FL '' XXXX yes, " XXXX '', not " XXXX '' ). I do not live remotely close to Florida. This could not have been when I tried to purchase food from XXXX 's because I ended up not getting food at that point and none of the total was reduced. I tried once again to use the card today on XXXX. It didn't work. I then attempted to load the card onto a XXXX account, in hopes it would let the card go through on XXXX. XXXX would not even accept the gift card and showed this message " Your card was declined by the issuing bank. Please try a different card or contact your card issuer with questions. '' Then, I filed this complaint.

Issue: Problem with a company's investigation into an existing problem

Subissue: Their investigation did not fix an error on your report

Consumer Complaint: According to XXXX, American Express alleges the date of first delinquency is XX/XX/XXXX. However, AMEX clearly states in its XXXX XX/XX/XXXX response " Your account was charged off on XX/XX/XXXX ". In AMEX XXXX XX/XX/XXXX response to my state 's attorney generals office, AMEX alleges the reason the account is not reporting accurately, is because " I entered into a payment agreement. '' However, I entered into no such agreement and this is confirmed in AMEX XXXX XX/XX/XXXX response, " Additionally, we are unable to locate a payment agreement from you. '' In absence of any sort of payment agreement for this open-ended account AMEX has unilaterally re-aged the debt. In an earlier XXXX XX/XX/XXXX response AMEX alleged the account was not being reported as charged-off due to " multiple billing reconciliation disputes. '' Thus AMEX is undoubtedly aware of the inaccurate reporting for this account/tradeline. Now, AMEX acknowledges a re-aging took place on a single occasion in XX/XX/XXXX to resolve one of many billing errors ( see XXXX XX/XX/XXXX AMEX response ). However, those attempts failed and have inflicted additional harm on me as a consumer by reporting fresh delinquency statuses that now are one-hundred XXXX ( XXXX ) days past-due for the fifth ( XXXX ) month in a row in XXXX, when the account was alleged the first date of alleged delinquency would be XX/XX/XXXX. Thus, AMEX re-aging of the account in XX/XX/XXXX now expands the time by which the derogatory stao have been charged-off in XX/XX/XXXX. Federal law indeed requires that AMEX charge off accounts not later than one-hundred eighty ( 180 ) days after date of first delinquency. That date of first delinquency would be at most the one-hundred eightieth ( 180 ) day immediately prior to XXXX XX/XX/XXXX. However, from AMEX own reporting to XXXX, the first date of alleged delinquency would be XX/XX/XXXX. Thus, AMEX re-aging of the account in XX/XX/XXXX now expands the time by which the derogatory status will remain on my credit report by nearly an additional two ( 2 ) years simply because simply because I filed billng errors to rectify a slew of issues that had been insufferable since early XXXX. AMEX 's own behavior has caused me to be denied permanent lodging due to tenant screening companies reliance on credit reports and scores. The practices of AMEX are therefore not only unfair and unlawful, but are additionally abusive. No consumer should have to experience what I have due to the negligence of American Express. AMEX has demonstrated it neither has intention nor capability to correct the false/misleading/inaccurate reporting. As such, the appropriate action for XXXX is to remove the account/tradeline from my credit file and/or to remove any and all derogatory payment status and payment history for years XXXX and XXXX and to then block AMEX from providing any additional information for the account/tradeline.

Issue: Trouble using the card

Subissue: Trouble using the card to spend money in a store or online

Consumer Complaint: I have received several American Express prepaid gift cards as a bonus from my employer. I have used the cards successfully in the past at many online stores including XXXX, as well as in my XXXX XXXXXXXX XXXX A few months ago, the cards started getting declined everywhere. I have tried multiple stores where I have shopped previously, including XXXX who called me and were not able to get the card to go through. I get an error when I try to use the card in my XXXX XXXX account as well, when it worked previously. I still have XXXX XXXX XXXX remaining on the cards and have not been successful in using the balance. The cards are digital gift cards, so I do not have a physical card I can use in stores.

Issue: Problem with a purchase shown on your statement

Subissue: Card was charged for something you did not purchase with the card

Consumer Complaint: I was involved in a fraud scam. The fraudster used my American Express account to purchase items totaling {$10000.00}. I never gave my card or card number to the fraudster. They represented themselves as being from American Express and were checking on fraudulent purchases that they made. They were very professional. I then got a letter from American Express, saying they recognized the suspicious activity. They proceeded to conduct an investigation. I received a letter ( XXXX ) saying the investigation was completed and charges would be credited to my account. The credits were made, but then reversed at a later date. When I questioned why the charges were now my responsibility, they said I gave the merchant my information willfully ( which I did not ) and they were holding me responsible. ( attached letter XX/XX/23. I have included all correspondence between AMEX and me. The correspondence describes the sequence of events regarding the fraud and my communications with AMEX. I have never done business with the merchants involved and AMEX has not given me proof that the merchant verified my identity at the time of purchases

Issue: Advertising and marketing, including promotional offers

Subissue: Didn't receive advertised or promotional terms

Consumer Complaint: I applied for an American Express Gold Card. When I applied they were offering {$250.00} for subscriptions. Before buying a plane ticket I called American Express customer service. The lady that replied said I would get the bonus of {$250.00} at the time I receive my statement. I proceeded buying a plane ticket. The statement arrived and no - {$250.00}. I called them. They said they will raise this issue with the finance department and let me know. For nearly two months I had to deal with this issue. They treated me terribly. I asked them for the transcripts of the phone call. They never gave that to me. They have everything in the system and they never were willing to really do their job. Many phone calls from my side. After that I started writing them in the chat service. At least that is written down so I can share that with you. All I want is the money they promised and never fulfilled and another complaint I have is that they never sent an email to me about the status of my complaint. I had to call or write in the chat several times. This is very concerning to me.

Issue: Fees or interest

Subissue: Problem with fees

Consumer Complaint: When I opened an account with an American Express card, all went well until I realized there would be a yearly charge of over XXXX. I called in and asked for the fee to be removed. I was told if I didn't use any of the credit card benefits it would be refunded to my card told. It did not happen. Then I had a XXXX XXXXXXXX and was in the XXXX and XXXX. My family told me there were charges on the account that couldn't be made by me. I asked to have those charges removed and all interest that was caused by the amount on my card. Plus the high interest that was raised. American Express then added late fees and over the limit they caused. 1-fraud charges 2- a fee of XXXX 3- late fees XXXX Over-the-limit fees

Issue: Advertising and marketing, including promotional offers

Subissue: Didn't receive advertised or promotional terms

Consumer Complaint: Yesterday, XX/XX/XXXX, at around XXXX XXXX, I went to purchase XXXX airline tickets. During checkout, it showed I could apply for an AMEX card and use it on my purchase to get a {$200.00} statement credit. I did that, and then the system said it was processing. This morning, I received an email to accept my card and create an account. I did that, and at no point did it give me a card number to use on my XXXX purchase. I called customer service this morning and they said they could not provide me a card number until my physical card comes in TWO WEEKS, and that I also had no record of the offer to receive a {$200.00} statement credit on my account. They said there was absolutely nothing they could do for me. This is extremely misleading, as it seems like you could just apply for a card as part of the check out process with XXXX and receive the {$200.00} statement credit. It also is awful because airline prices change daily, and in 2 weeks I will not receive the same price for the tickets.
