Issue: Credit monitoring or identity theft protection services

Subissue: Billing dispute for services

Consumer Complaint: Upon looking at my consumer report, I observed a third party non- affiliated, student loan, debt collector illegally reporting on my consumer report without my express written consent, who I do not have a contract to obligate me to them in anyway. Previous to this there was another 3rd party debt collector non affiliate who was also reporting to my consumer report illegally, who has since been removed from my consumer report. Then out of nowhere DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION/NELN started reporting to my consumer report. Doing my time attending college in 1998, I have never provided a wet ink signature with any company for goods and services named DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION/NELN. This is a complete violation of my rights to privacy as a consumer, and identity theft, because they do not have my express written consent to report on my consumer report. All laws are attached with this complaint along with a affidavit.

Issue: Dealing with your lender or servicer

Subissue: Don't agree with the fees charged

Consumer Complaint: Nelnet is charging a higher interest rate than my actual interest rate. They refuse to explain why or correct it. I have called and emailed a few times and turned them into you last year but nothing has happened. Second time I am reporting Nelnet to you for the same issue. Last time you closed out the complaint with the hope Nelnet would resolve the issue but they did not. They still haven't resolved the problem of charging me higher interest then my fixed rate federal student loans were taken out at. For instance, several loans were at 6.5 % when originated. This is reflected in the first section of the attachment copied from Nelnet. However, go to the second section reflecting the same loans groups that should be 6.5 % are being charged 6.8 % interest. Nelnet refuses to correct this. I have given them a year to explain/correct this. Also, it seems wrong that my payment is {$440.00} but only {$28.00} goes towards principle. I haven't done the math but that doesn't seem right?

Issue: Dealing with your lender or servicer

Subissue: Trouble with how payments are being handled

Consumer Complaint: I have made numerous calls to Nelnet about my parent plus loan erroneously showing as past due when it should be current because the XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX. Nelnet has had independent confirmation of this from the school at least since XX/XX/23 and has failed to act to update the account, despite my numerous requests, escalations and complaints. For more than two months I have been told it would be corrected, and every date they promised has lapsed. In addition, Nelnet suggested to me more than once to consider using MY available forbearance/deferrment time to compensate for THEIR failure to update the account in a timely manner. I told them it was unfair for me to use any of my available 36 months of forberance/deferment because they can't update the account timely, despite admitting numerous times they have had all the information needed to do so, repeatedly.

Issue: Dealing with your lender or servicer

Subissue: Trouble with how payments are being handled

Consumer Complaint: I applied for the Biden SAVE student loan repayment plan on XX/XX/XXXX and provided my income from the XXXX tax year. Based on that, the email I received on XX/XX/XXXX from NELNET said the Department of Education had directed NELNET to change me to the SAVE plan and that my payment would be {$0.00}. I received the following From NELNET on XX/XX/XXXX : Your Nelnet monthly billing statement is now available. To view your statement and make a payment, log in to your Nelnet.com account. Once logged in, choose Statements from the Documents menu. Your Payment Information Account : XXXX Due Date : XX/XX/XXXX Amount Due : {$0.00} We encourage you to continue to make monthly payments even if your amount due is {$0.00} because interest may continue to accrue. On XX/XX/XXXX, NELNET then reversed course and sent me an email saying I would owe {$210.00} on XX/XX/XXXX. They changed my due date and payment amount without any further explanation. I called and spoke directly to NELNET on XX/XX/XXXX to get clarification about what was going on. I asked why had I received an email saying I was on the SAVE plan and saying my payment was going to be {$0.00} ( which was my expectation ), but now were changing their tune and said I had to pay {$210.00}. Customer service said the system was showing that I had been placed on another program ( Pay as You Go ) and that I had never been placed on the SAVE plan. I asked why that did not happen even though the emails I received from NELNET said I had been placed on the SAVE program. They could not answer that. Said " hum, thats weird ''. Customer service said the only option was to reapply for the XXXXAVE program and it would take XXXX weeks to process. In the meantime, customer service said they would put me on an administrative forebearance and interest would not accrue and interest would not be capitalized during the forebearance period. Customer service told me that I should watch my account to make sure the forebearance was shown on the account, and if it did not get put in place, I should call back. I have been watching the account and nothing had changed. So I called NELNET customer service again ( XX/XX/XXXX ). This time, Customer Service told me that my application was incomplete ( they never notified me of this ). I asked them why it was incomplete and Customer Service said they did not know. Customer service also said that almost everything the previous Customer service person told me was inaccurate/or a lie. My loan is accruing interest and the interest will be capitalized. This time, NELNET customer service told me I had to reapply again ( third time now ) and would not take my last years income tax return amount to base my payment amount ( they are telling me I have to submit a current paystub rather than use my last years tax return ). They also told me it would be XXXX weeks to process the third application. This is not how the program is supposed to work. It is supposed to be using my tax return. Now I have a payment due in XXXX days in NELNETs system and they have screwed me over time and time again. They are a joke. Why does my government use them. I have no leverage in this. Even though NELNET continues to XXXX me since XXXX, they don't care and all they say is " Sorry ''. Just take a bite out of the XXXX sandwich we are giving to you. I did what I was supposed to back in early XXXX, and here we are in XXXX when my loan payment is due and they still have not gotten this right. Frankly, I am flabbergasted at the incompetence of the entire company. I need your help CFPB. Please protect me from these lying bunch of XXXX

Issue: Struggling to repay your loan

Subissue: Problem with forgiveness, cancellation, or discharge

Consumer Complaint: I am writing to bring to your attention a matter concerning my eligibility for student loan forgiveness. Earlier this year, I received a letter indicating approval for loan forgiveness. However, when the forgiveness process commenced, I was inadvertently skipped, and my loans remain outstanding. I firmly believe that I meet the qualifications outlined in President Biden 's student loan forgiveness plan. I kindly request a thorough review of my case to determine my eligibility for partial or complete forgiveness of my student loans. I appreciate your prompt attention to this matter and look forward to a fair assessment of my eligibility for student loan forgiveness. Your assistance in resolving this issue will be invaluable in alleviating my financial burden. Thank you for your time and consideration. Sincerely,

Issue: Dealing with your lender or servicer

Subissue: Trouble with how payments are being handled

Consumer Complaint: Aside from the fact that this government does not care about the generations of XXXX that had to take out XXXX XXXX only to have to be transferred to the worst loan servicer after being promised that even though you can not forgive our loans, that we would at least have an easier time paying it off. NELNET LOAN SERVICER has been the absolute worse experience I have ever had. I had applied for the SAVE plan and had made significantly less money since I had been on maternity leave for the last 2 months and first 3 months of the year. I had resubmitted my application in XXXX of 2023. I got a notification in XXXX that I had to pay the same amount I was paying 3 years ago before COVID. THEN to make matters worse I see that my payment has been applied to my interest instead of my principle, which we had already seen had screwed many people over in the last 10 years since it causes the loan to continue to accrue interest on an amount of money that has been paid for the last 7 years but has not moved a needle on the principle. I have tried to get in touch with them and its almost a 2 hour wait on the phone only for the lady to read some script off a screen and try to interrupt the answer of my questions without actually having any knowledge. I had reapplied for SAVE again after resubmitting my pay stub to NELNET in XXXX. I am not set to pay anything until XXXX yet my interest continues to climb and they applied my last payment to my interest. I have found this site to file a complaint because I found a website with complaints from other people who had the same issues with Nelnet. I did not agree to have this loan servicer. I was just transferred from Great Lakes. My husband has a different loan servicer and he makes more than me a year but I owe more a month than he does. Something smells fishy and corrupt going on. Please I beg of you, on behalf of all the XXXX who took out Loans and are struggling. I am a XXXX XXXX XXXX who worked all throughout the pandemic and this is the thank you we get from the government. Please fix this matter!!!!!

Issue: Dealing with your lender or servicer

Subissue: Trouble with how payments are being handled

Consumer Complaint: In XXXX XXXX XXXX I had made payments towards my unsubsidized loans in total of {$1600.00}. This money was supposed to pay off all my unsubsidized loans however it was backdated & was submitted to my subsidized loans instead. I have called XXXX separate occasions to tell them to reallocate them to the correct loan. I was told it would be transferred & there is proof on their end of this request. Months later I check there is still a balance on my unsubsidized loans and they had never reallocated the money. I also have emails confirming that two of my loans have been paid off yet it still shows a balance. I spoke to XXXX one of the managers at Nelnet on XXXX and she told me that she sees that what I have said is true & it looks like the accounting team has messed up my payments. She told me that she would call me on XX/XX/XXXX in the morning at XXXX PT because that would be when she can contact the accounting office when they are open again. but she never did call me back. Currently I have interest from that loan even thought I shouldnt have in the first place.

Consumer Complaint: I applied for discharge of my XXXX XXXX XXXX scholarship loan, provided via XXXX XXXX. Months ago I submitted via student aid.gov and through Nelnet. I withdrew from XXXX online Graduate program, when the first class I had was marked with undue harassment by the professor. The loan was originally a XXXX loan amount, which is now roughly {$1600.00} via Nelnet loan servicing. I am paying for this loan that did not serve me, as I withdrew. I have XXXX children in college that I need to help now ; I should not have to pay for an educational loan where I withdrew under circumstances brought on by the constant harassment of the professor.

Issue: Struggling to repay your loan

Subissue: Problem with your payment plan

Consumer Complaint: In XX/XX/2023, I applied for the new IDR SAVE plan via my account on Nelnet. I then found out in XXXX that I was placed on the ICR plan instead of the SAVE plan, making my monthly payments unaffordable. On XX/XX/2023 I reached out to Nelnet to find out why I was rejected from the SAVE plan. I was told over the phone that the reason I was not placed on the SAVE repayment plan was because my income was too high. After doing additional research, I found that this is not an appropriate reason to be rejected from this plan. This unfounded rejection from the SAVE plan is causing me to miss out on qualifying payments and I want the months impacted to count towards forgiveness and either charge me the IDR amount or have an administrative forbearance but still count.
