Issue: Advertising and marketing, including promotional offers
Subissue: Confusing or misleading advertising about the credit card
Consumer Complaint: Navy Federal Credit Union ( NFCU ) has offered a misleading and deceptively marketed Visa Platinum credit card. The promotional offer for this product lists terms that drew me to apply to the product. I have excellent credit. Additionally, I have other lending products with NFCU with large lines of credit. I applied to a card with a promotional offer of 0.99 % APY with {$0.00} balance transfer fee. Upon asking NFCU for a $ XXXX credit limit, rather than contacting me before approving the application to inform the product wont meet my needs, they simply opened the account at an insultingly low credit limit based on my qualifications and existing lines of credit. When asked several times NFCU refused to provide sufficient explanation. Only that I may apply for a credit limit increase in 3-6 months. This period of time would occur after the promotional period ends, and would lock me into extremely high interest. Im a service-connected XXXX veteran, which is a demographic particularly targeted by NFCU. Ive also banked with them since XXXX. I believe that this credit product is a deceptive practice to lock customers into high interest balance transfer situations. I will be gradually ending my banking relationship with NFCU.

Issue: Fees or interest
Subissue: Charged too much interest
Consumer Complaint: I called Navy Federal Credit Union ( XX/XX/XXXX at XXXX ) to get a credit card extension and they denied it siting obscure reasons. They increased my interest rate to an unreasonable rate. I'm on a fixed income and they are squeezing to the point of causing my credit score to go down. I've contacted them via direct message on the app ( XX/XX/XXXX & XX/XX/XXXX ) they provide for customers and nobody has responded to me. I'm a XXXX veteran who's looking for work and their lack of flexibility in providing extension or reducing my interest rate is predatory. I've since called again ( XX/XX/XXXX at XXXX ) to resubmit the same application for an extension and waiting on word back. The amount I owe on the card is {$17000.00} and they want me to pay {$690.00}. They have failed to provide the assistance they claim to provide on their app under the past due accounts tab they so conveniently highlighted on the app to remind me that my account is past due.

Issue: Problem caused by your funds being low
Subissue: Bounced checks or returned payments
Consumer Complaint: I lost my job and started to accrue returned check fees from company 's that were automatically deducting from my account. I made Navy Federal aware of my situation and they said there's nothing they could do other than to close my account and that I couldn't even do that unless my account was positive. As I was negative and desperately needed the funds and my last direct deposits, that wasn't an option. From XX/XX/XXXX to XX/XX/XXXX, I accrued 16 total returned check fees totaling about {$460.00} which downright seems criminal. They only approved to return 4 fees totaling {$120.00} or about 25 % of collected fees. Is there something that can be done about this? Is this considered ethical? Did it cost them {$340.00} for an automated system to reject a charge? Please let me know. Thank You

Consumer Complaint: In XX/XX/2023, Navy Federal Credit Union placed my account in " Restricted Status '' causing me to speak with their fraud department, when I spoke with them, they did not give a cause or reason for the status. I received a letter on XX/XX/2023 explaining that a transaction was returned to the payee as " Account Frozen ''. ( see attached ). On XX/XX/2023 I received a letter stating that I owe Navy Federal Credit Union {$42.00} to my " Frozen Account '' because of this transaction that was " not paid '' however I do not have Access to my accounts due to the " Restricted Status '' placed on my account. ( see attached ) Since XXXX I have been contacting Navy Federal Credit Union to try and resolve these issues and get my monthly statements mailed to me, however, have not been successful. I called on XX/XX/23 to ask for another statement because the one I requested on XX/XX/2023 was a copy and not an original. When I asked the supervisor for the original and wanted to make sure going forward I could receive my statements monthly his response was " your account is in restricted status and you will not be allowed to get your monthly statements '', my response was " so you expect me to pay a bill that I have no idea what I am paying or have a statement for ''? His response was " well you still owe us the money ''. Due to all of the statements not coming in the mail, not having any access to my accounts online, I have not been able to make a payment and therefor Navy Federal has reported negatively to the consumer credit reporting agencies, causing me harm as a reflection. I will me required to move due to my home I am renting is being sold, now, because of Navy Federal not following the law, my credit has been impacted negatively and it will be difficult to get into another place of residence. I have also attached a letter which I just sent off today, as I am now aware of the what they are suppose to be doing, XX/XX/2023 opting out to Navy Federal Credit Union. According to the Fair Credit Reporting Act 15 USC 1681 section 602 a states " There is a need to insure that consumer reporting agencies exercise their grave responsibilities with fairness, impartiality, and a respect for the consumers right to privacy. '' XXXX and XXXX are consumer reporting agencies and I am the Consumer. '' Navy Federal Credit Union is a financial institution by definition under that title. 15 USC 1681 section 604 a section 2 states that " In general Subject to subsection ( c ), any consumer reporting agency may furnish a consumer report under the following circumstances and no other : in accordance with the written instructions of the consumer to whom it relates. Any and all consent to XXXX, XXXX, Navy Federal Credit Union whether it be verbal, non-verbal, written, implied or otherwise is revoked. 15 USC 6802 ( b ) ( c ) states that " A financial institution may not disclose nonpublic personal information to a nonaffiliated third party unless the consumer is given an explanation of how the consumer can exercise that nondisclosure option. '' Navy Federal Credit Union never informed me of my right to exercise my nondisclosure option. Not only that 15 USC 1681C ( a ) ( 5 ) states '' Except as authorized under subsection ( b ), no consumer reporting agency may make any consumer report containing any of the following items of information Any other adverse item of information, other than records of convictions of crimes which antedates the report by more than seven years. Consumer Complaint: On XX/XX/XXXX I called Navy Federal Credit and spoke with a representative about my auto loan that was adversely affected during the height of the pandemic. The account was brought current XX/XX/XXXX and per section 4021 of the CARES Act once the account the consumer brings the credit obligation or account current, the furnisher must report the credit obligation or account as current. The rep submitted an " OLC '' to their consumer reporting department and provided a resolution time of 7-10 business days. XX/XX/XXXX I called the company for a status update and was told by another rep the review had not been started and there was no ETA on completion.
