Issue: Struggling to repay your loan
Subissue: Can't get other flexible options for repaying your loan
Consumer Complaint: I have protections for my federal student loans through borrower defense to repayment. I attended the XXXX XXXX XXXX MN which is now defunct. My loans are with the same lender that they originated with, Navient ( XXXX Sallie Mae ) Are there any consumer protections for private loans for fraudulent for profit college loans? I have been paying on these loans for years with no options to refinance ( based on my attendance at this scam school no one wants to refinance the loans, aside from navient and requires a cosigner ) no bankruptcy protections and no accountability by the school for not providing adequate services, nor lender for issuing loans for a scam school. Is anything being done for private student loans on for profit fraud schools?

Issue: Struggling to repay your loan
Subissue: Problem lowering your monthly payments
Consumer Complaint: I have an {$85000.00} private student loan from Navient, but at the of the application in XXXX, it was called Sallie Mae. The loan had started out at around {$40000.00} and has grown so much. I have not received any communication about my loan being canceled from Navient 's big lawsuit in XXXX. My main issue is that I have a co-signer and need to remove them but Navient makes it very difficult. From XXXX, I made 12 on-time payments of about {$1000.00}. This was one of the requirements to remove my co-signer from my loan.

Consumer Complaint: In XXXX, I took out a private loan from Sallie Mae ( Navient ) in the amount of {$8000.00}. This loan required repayment to immediately begin. I have consistently made the monthly payments on this loan for over 13 years. I haven't been late on my payment for this loan I have not been late on a payment for this loan in almost 10 years. In looking into my loan, I discovered that at the time of distribution, my principal total was {$8000.00}, but the " unpaid principal '' began at over {$14000.00}. So I have been accumulating interest and paying on a number that was not what I applied for or was dispersed. In XXXX my loans were sold to Navient and the total principal was changed to {$6700.00}. In the 10 years since they were sold, I have paid over {$7000.00} on this loan and the total principal owed has only decreased to {$5700.00}. There is not a way for me to control how my payments are allocated and there doesn't seem to be explanation anywhere. Today when I went to review this loan again, the status has been changed to in-school deferment. I have not requested this, nor did I give permission for it to be put in this status and I do not have a way of correcting this myself. The pay off date for this loan currently shows XXXX and with the current amount I am paying monthly, this would result in my paying another {$13000.00} or more on this loan. How a loan for {$8000.00} that has never been refinanced could end up costing the payer over {$24000.00} in the lifetime of the loan is crazy to me.

Consumer Complaint: My name is XXXX XXXX and I am writing to you today to file a complaint against Navient. I called Navient at XXXX XXXX on Tuesday, XX/XX/XXXX. The purpose of my call was to notify Navient that I am invoking a defense to repayment of the loans because the school I attended, XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX ( XXXX ), defrauded me and for this reason I will no longer be making payments on my private student loans. The response I received from the Navient customer service representative when I called was unfortunately, there is no way to really dispute that here.. So unfortunately youll still have to pay on these loans here. The Navient representative clearly denied there is a process. I sent a written summary of this call by email to the general Navient account as well as to the Navient office of the customer advocate. I received a response from the office of the customer advocate dated XX/XX/2023. ( I have attached a copy ). In this letter, the customer advocate XXXX XXXX explained, among other statements, that there is no discharge program available at this time for students who claim a defense to repay a private loan due to misinformation or the quality of education they received at their school. I believe there is a problem with this response and there should be a process for providing me with more information and relief. Further, since making this call, Navient has been calling me repeatedly day and night. Navient has also sent written communications, including friendly reminders that my payment is due even though I am raising a defense to repayment. Having attended XXXX has left me with significant debt and a worthless degree, leading among other harms to financial distress and limited career opportunities. Attending this school did not provide me with a quality education or necessary credentials, leading to difficulty in obtaining jobs and has made it impossible for me to advance in life like a typical XXXX yr old. I have not been able to buy a home or rent an apt without a cosigner. The emotional toll this whole ordeal has caused my family and I is inexcusable.

Consumer Complaint: Navient states it is charging me for unpaid student loan. However the attached proves at of XXXX the claim of {$3800.00} was paid in the amount of {$3800.00}. Servicers have provided fraudulant accounting attached. It allocates payment of interest, thus leaving a balance. Servicer states : Any amount not paid by the trustee under the proof of claim will remain due. XXXX would then be due. I am then due a refund for last years mistake payment.

Consumer Complaint: I have reached out numerous times to find answers to our questions on the spousal consolidated student loans. Unfortunately, I have not been able to get the answers I need and am reaching out to you for clarification. My husband and I, under the guidance of Sallie Mae, took on a joint spousal consolidation back in XXXX. We have been in repayment since then. We have used a few deferments while off work for the birth of our children and then Sallie Mae sold or was renamed Navient. At that time, in XXXX, we then were told about the XXXX and have been in that ever since. We have paid over XXXX payments over the years and that is just since XXXX. I have no idea or can I find out how to find the number of payments we have made before that time. He graduated in XXXX and I was XXXX. Now, as you can imagine our loan has grown significantly since we have been on the IDR plan but I was very excited to see the new counting strategy. And then I come to find out because our loans are FFLEP we are unable to have the recount without consolidating into Direct Loans. After speaking to FSA, I was just informed joint spousal consolidations can not consolidate to Direct Loans before XXXX because they would have to be split first and this process has not been figured out. We have been paying on our school loans since XXXX and are still paying. I understand completely they are not paid off but I also know there is a 25-year limit. Unfortunately, since our IDR did not start until XXXX, we are now being told we are still going to pay until XXXX? On my Navient acct it says we started paying in XXXX. The person on the phone said XXXX is the count start? This has me completely baffled and I would like to know what to do from this point on. We now have three daughters in college and also have a PLUS loan out which we will be starting payments as soon as the freeze is over. I would like some sound advice for our own selves and also for my daughters and their future loans because as of now I feel both Navient and Sallie Mae have led me in the wrong direction in so many different ways. Our payoff amounts are less than the accrued interest on the loans and much more than the original loans. I understand accrued interest but the timing and recount I do not. Thank you in advance and please forward to anyone who can help. Please call with any questions. XXXX or email XXXX XXXX

Consumer Complaint: I have a private student loan with Navient. The loan was initially for {$6400.00} and now it is at $ XXXX out of which $ XXXX are for accrued interest. The interest rate on this loan is 13:5 % and it originated in XXXX. Navient has put obstacles at every point to make repayment possible : A ) Navient never informed me there was Income Driven Repayment optioms. B ) Navient pushed to long term forbearance paying {$50.00} to renew it, every three months. C ) Navient will not lower the interest rate, they advised me to apply for refinancing with Navient themselves, however, they denied me due to my credit score, which was ruined by Navient. D ) Navient has not furnished ANY information of their discharge process, or settlement options ; they want me to pay {$300.00} a month which is prohibitive at this point. E ) Navient harassed incessantly during the pandemic, they offered covid related forbearance but charged a fee for it every time. F ) Navient customer service treats borrowers like criminals, there is not an ounce of compassion and their voices exude disgust, it is extremely distressing to hear them put me down every-time I call. I have XXXX XXXX every time I see them on my caller ID. G ) Navient has offered me a repayment interest only plan, but in order to accept it they want to withdraw the money from my account automatically, they do not offer any other type of payment options. My husband it is a veteran and I have been a military spouse for 20 years with multiple moves and these circumstances have causes my employment to be sporadic, I have spent the last 15 years id my life being the main caretaker. I have been able to find a job with a non profit organization and from the moment I told Navient this and asked about Income Drive Repayment I was told I do not hace access to that due to the loan being a private loan, my repayment options are non existent and Navient calls me on the daily during work hours even though I told them I could not answer phone calls. Navient is demanding repayment and their representatives threatened me with wage garnishment. I am at my wits end and I need help dealing with Navient. I feel threatened by them, stressed by them, mistreated by them, treated as a criminal by them.
