Issue: Struggling to repay your loan

Subissue: Can't temporarily delay making payments

Consumer Complaint: Student loan was originally made from Sallie Mae now Navient. We, myself & co-signer receive at least 2 phone calls per week & numerous e mails plus mails regarding these loans. They have been in forbearance/deferred to the max and currently the harassment has been overwhelming. I have spoken to them numerous times explaining our current situation which is, my mom & co-signer was diagnosed with XXXX XXXX & can not work nor receive any income from XXXX. Because of this unfortunate issue, I have taken over not only all the household expenses, but my mom 's expenses plus my own. My husband works part time & he pays his own expenses as well as some household expenses. In XX/XX/2019, I fell at work & XXXX XXXX XXXX which recently I had XXXX on & am currently on XXXX XXXX for the next 12 weeks. Whenever I speak to Navient and try to work something out, they do get very nasty & ask how I pay my other bills or tell me about a higher power to pray to. This is not sitting well with me at all. This past week I received 2 calls XX/XX/XXXX & XX/XX/XXXX 6 days apart & the rep. dismissed my comment about it, 8 emails plus my daughter received the same, then paper mails we both received. We are fully aware of the debt owed however, we are trying to work with them & are very demanding & get a little personal. And the phone calls keep coming.

Issue: Dealing with your lender or servicer

Subissue: Need information about your loan balance or loan terms

Consumer Complaint: 1. As of XX/XX/2018 my Federal Loans disappeared from my acct. I double checked with navient and they couldnt find them. I had no way to pay them. I checked on student loans.gov to check if my loans were still active and with Navient. 2. I then was blocked off the website. Now both private loans and Fed Loans are not visible online. I opt you for paper statements. I have no way of viewing my loans or paying them online. 3. I have been calling them for over 3 months regarding website issues and they have done nothing. I have been harassed for payments but they do nothing to allow me to view my loans to pay them. I been told they have a note in my acct regarding my issues. But no one has helped me in 3 months.

Issue: Struggling to repay your loan

Subissue: Can't get other flexible options for repaying your loan

Consumer Complaint: Called SallieMae several times about the cost of loans being repaid while still in school .All they offered was a 12 month payment of {$25.00} per loan. They didnt say any other options were available and didnt explain how much more money on the loans/interest would have to be paid after agreeing to this payment.

Issue: Dealing with your lender or servicer

Subissue: Trouble with how payments are being handled

Consumer Complaint: I have noticed once I went on repayment based on my income, my statements no longer show interest accumulated on a month to month bases. Also noticed it does not show the extra payments being paid. My balance does not show a difference after payments were made. I also am noticing my subsidized account is not dropping and the interest is accumulating and unsubsidized loan shows a very small payment. I have made payments that would cover both loan interest for a month. Instead my student loans are barely dropping. My understanding is my interest should be around {$300.00} to {$350.00} but when I have paid {$400.00} a month the payment is only being made to the unsubsided account. I was lied to on the phone because prior to my paying my loans back, the website showed my monthly interest. My payments are not being applied to all my interest cause the interest is going up not down.

Issue: Dealing with your lender or servicer

Subissue: Don't agree with the fees charged

Consumer Complaint: Date : XXXX A spreadsheet is attached to illustration the complaint below. I have three loan accounts with Navient. One of which was paid off online on XX/XX/2019 and the balance has been negative ( overpayment ). But today, Navient website said I still owe them {$81.00} in principal and {$0.00} in interest. This is totally unreasonable and I think even a fraud for CFPB to look into. The balance was negative, meaning I didn't owe them for that loan anymore, but they just came back and say I do. I believe they are not doing their business ethically, and it's very deceptive, taking advantage of the customers. And I was on the phone with multiple people for over an hour. No one could help me close the account that was paid off. And I have to see balance building up for the debt I already paid off. In addition to the above loan, I have another issue with another loan, of which the agreed-upon interest rate is XXXX %. But today I see the principal increased {$15.00} by way of capitalization of interest. This is unreasonable because I do not have balance due, payments were made on time. Why this " punishment '' of capitalization of interest? What's more is that the interest portion increased by {$30.00}. This is also upsetting because the XXXX % daily interest should have been {$5.00}, let alone that they capitalized {$15.00} to principal, and there was no corresponding adjustment made in the interest portion. I'm very disappointed at and frustrated with Navient, I don't know if it's an honest mistake of their system or they are defrauding their customers. I hope CFPB can help me resolve the issues with Navient. If they are defrauding their customers, please help protect the public with the power you have.

Issue: Dealing with your lender or servicer

Subissue: Don't agree with the fees charged

Consumer Complaint: In XX/XX/XXXX I graduated from XXXX XXXX XXXX. I borrowed {$58000.00} on a private loan. This amount is key. After graduation and my 6 month grace period I couldn't afford the initial payment of roughly {$400.00} per month. I sent in partial payments but the Sallie Mae/Navient worker on the phone told me they wouldn't accept partial payments. So they advised me to go on a forbearance. They didn't explain fully what would happen to my loan in regards to interest and capitalized interest and accrued interest. I was young and ignorant. They said my payment would go up slightly but hopefully I would be making more money at that point. I ended up putting my loan on an 18 month forbearance. At the end of that they told me I ran out of the option for forbearance so I had to start paying. My payment went from roughly {$400.00} a month to over {$850.00} a month. My disbursement amount on the loan on XX/XX/XXXX was {$96000.00}. So from the time I graduated in XX/XX/XXXX until XX/XX/XXXX my loan went from {$58000.00} to {$96000.00}. That is {$37000.00} more than I borrowed due to capitalized accrued interest. This is my first issue. This is criminal and corrupt. I was blatantly mislead and my monthly payment more than doubled. I had to make these payments because they didn't give me another option. So I had to move my wife and XXXX kids into my in-laws basement for over 18 months just to stay afloat. Here is my second issue. To date I've paid {$67000.00} on the private loan and according to Navient I still owe {$92000.00}. This is criminal. I've paid more than the original amount on my loan before the mislead forbearance. I understand paying interest but this is lunacy. So in 11 years I've paid over {$67000.00} and my loan has only gone down {$3200.00}. Again, this is criminal. At this rate it will literally take me 310 years to pay off the debt. Do the math! This beyond absurd. I've tried talking to Navient but I can't get past their normal hourly paid call center worker. They don't care about me. I need help and relief. I've already paid 112 % of the original amount borrowed yet I owe {$92000.00}. Please somebody help me!

Issue: Dealing with your lender or servicer

Subissue: Received bad information about your loan

Consumer Complaint: Sallie Mae originally had my loans and now, Navient has them. I have attempted since the very beginning to acquire about student forgiveness since I worked as a XXXX XXXX for 10+ years in inner city and XXXX XXXX XXXX. However, I was always given inaccurate information, etc. since XXXX and XX/XX/XXXX. Unfortunately, my loan has been mishandled. The history reflects that its been more capitalized interest and late fees than payments. Again, I have sought, written, talked and advocated for YEARS to obtain loan forgiveness. According to Navient as of XX/XX/XXXX, I had the following : Voluntary forbearance - used 60 months which is the max ; Unemployment forbearance -used 36 month which is the max, and no economic/hardship deferment or burden forbearance entitled for 36 months. I worked for a school system as a XXXX XXXX XXXX for 10+ years from XXXX. In starting my career, I started to pay a minimum amount towards my student loans. But throughout the years and with various hardships, I could not pay. So, I communicated with Sallie Mae/Navient still asking for loan forgiveness. I was given various information about contacting the Dept. of Education ( which I did and local agencies, too ) but I never could acquire how to do it. Eventually Sallie Mae/Navient began to introduce forbearance information, etc. and I started to make application to seek remedy. Then, I moved to the State of Mississippi in XXXX, XXXX. I changed jobs and eventually lost my job. Navient throughout my move and life circumstances has not provided any information about new loan forgiveness program or not much of anything else except a forbearance. Until, XXXX, XXXX, I recently learned through Navient about the Income-Driven Repayment. During that time, I thought the plan was the Obama Student Loan Repayment plan based from the information given by Navient. However, I was eventually told months later that I did not qualify for the program, but I was in the income-driven repayment plan program! What is that? This information was not fully explained nor did I fully understood. If so, I would have been advocating about acquiring this program years ago. Since Navient told me about the program in the midst of reapplying, I talked with a supervisor, XXXX, to asked about retroactivating the years I missed being in the program since, I was not informed by Navient. She said that the company could not retroactive it. Regretfully, Sallie Mae/Navient has steered a stuggling borrower toward multiple forbearances instead of income-driven repayment plans. The information is there. I've asked for all of the times I received a forbearance but the information is not located ANYWHERE on my profile. So, for the 2nd time, THEY ARE SUPPOSE TO SEND ME THE INFORMATION!!!! In conclusion, in just finding out about this information also has created another problem because it has resulted in misallocated of payments, how to enroll and re-enroll in IDR, unnecessary interest occurring and negative credit strikes due to Sallie Mae/Navients ' business practices. I believe that several lawsuits including the State of Mississippi have issued information about the same thing I am talking about.
