Issue: Struggling to pay your bill

Subissue: Credit card company won't work with you while you're going through financial hardship

Consumer Complaint: I went through a very difficult period in my life personally and professionally that caused me to get behind on a number of my payment obligations. I have contacted Discover to try and resolve the matter and was told to contact the collection agency ( XXXX ) they had hired to handle my account. I contacted the agency and they told me they were unable to negotiate on Discover 's behalf and that I would need to talk to Discover. I again called Discover only to be told they would not help and any negotiation would have to go through the collection agency. Upon again contacting the collection agency ( XXXX ) I was told in no uncertain terms that any and all negotiations would have to be done with Discover. Discover is unwilling to discuss my situation or hear me out on any negotiation or attempts to resolve this issue. I am hoping you are able to help and my credit has been crippled and my ability to simply move forward with my life has been hindered.

Issue: Fees or interest

Subissue: Charged too much interest

Consumer Complaint: I have been a credit card holder of Discover bank since XXXX, in XXXX I received personal loan offer letter ( the page is attached ) of XXXX USD for 48 months at a fixed monthly payment of XXXX USD. In my XXXX statement I realized that the loan amount has been added to my balance as " balance transfer '' thus increasing my interest rate and APR which is in contrast to personal loan agreement. ( page attached ) I have contacted Discover several times but no explanation or correction has been applied. I am frustrated because that loan should have been finished by XX/XX/XXXX however I am still paying monthly payment for the balance that must have been completed last year. I consider this a deliberate scam or mistake as major negligence if not fraud or consumer abuse.

Issue: Problem when making payments

Subissue: Problem during payment process

Consumer Complaint: This has happened twice, last month in XX/XX/2023 and this month of XXXX, the problem is making a payment. I usually make my monthly payment before the due date of the XXXX to coincide with my pay period which is issued on the XXXX each month or the XXXX if it's the weekend. I paid early my monthly payment for XX/XX/XXXX due date on the XXXX with my new prepaid debit card issued by XXXX XXXX. through their retailer, PLS, my payroll and my son 's SSI and XXXX pay goes to the account in my name as I am his authorized payee. Discover card never told me I couldn't use the prepaid card to make a payment, I just so happened looked to see if the payment posted on the XXXX and it had not but a notice of a return payment fee had been applied as well as a late fee, {$40.00} and {$30.00} respectively, for a total of {$70.00} which decreased my available credit and notated my account with a late payment. Next day, the XXXX, I immediately went to the PLS Check Cashiers and made the payment at the store through bill pay. I contacted the customer service line, an Agent then told me I couldn't use my prepaid card, the number or routing and account number to make a payment but would remove the total {$70.00} in fees from my account NEXT BILLING CYCLE! The information stating that the cardholder had to use a big bank was nowhere on the application information section and now I run the risk of being reported as a late payment when in actual I paid early then paid again on the due date once the original payment was rejected via a method that was supposedly authorized but they just didn't process the bill payment until several days after the XXXX, my due date but I had my receipts.

Issue: Dealing with your lender or servicer

Subissue: Received bad information about your loan

Consumer Complaint: I have consolidated then refinanced my student loans from XXXX XXXX, then Discover, and now currently XXXX XXXX XXXX. In 2018, I refinanced the total amount from XXXX XXXX to Discover. In doing so, Discover was tasked with purchases those loans from Discover. According to the records on XXXX XXXX, Discover bought {$25000.00} of loan # XXXX and {$23000.00} of loan # XXXX in XX/XX/2018 ( {$48000.00} in total ). However, the total amount of loan # XXXX was {$29000.00} and the total amount of loan # XXXX was {$26000.00}, which equals {$56000.00}. In short, they never purchased the full loan amount of either, leaving {$7300.00} in an account I believed to be closed. Those loans have accrued interest, unknown to me, over the course of XXXX years, leaving me with nearly {$12000.00} owed in an account that I was told had been bought, refinanced, and closed. It's also of note that I never received any indication from XXXX XXXX that these loans were delinquent, which gave me no reason to suspect anything odd. Now, once I had discovered this, I reviewed my documents and came to the above conclusion. Then, I contacted XXXX XXXX. They told me that this was the fault of the lender that refinanced, Discover. I then called Discover, and have had an ongoing XXXX month case opened to look into this. The employee I contacted and have been working with has been very kind, but Discover makes it very difficult for him to help beyond sending it to another department. He believes that it was likely a typing error done by anther employee. However I've received no indication that this is being handled in any way by Discover. Please help me resolve this.

Issue: Closing your account

Subissue: Company closed your account

Consumer Complaint: I am writing to file a formal complaint against Discover Financial Services for egregious violations of the Fair Credit Reporting Act ( FCRA ) and the Privacy Act of 1974. My concern revolves around Discovers inaccurate reporting of negative transactions on my consumer report, a clear infringement of the rights protected under 15 USC 1681a ( d ) ( 2 ) ( A ) ( i ). In addition to the FCRA violations, Discover has failed to provide the appropriate mechanisms for me to exercise my legal right to opt-out of the sharing of my nonpublic financial information with third-party non-affiliates, as mandated by 16 CFR 313.7 and 15 USC 6802. This blatant disregard for consumer rights is unacceptable. Despite providing Discover Financial Services with formal notice of my decision to opt-out, the institution persists in violating the Fair Credit Reporting Act and the Privacy Act of 1974. This not only represents a fundamental breach of my privacy but also undermines the integrity of the regulatory framework established to safeguard consumers. I am urging the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau to conduct a thorough investigation into Discover Financial Services practices and take immediate action to rectify these flagrant violations. As a regulatory body empowered by 15 USC 3805, I expect the CFPB to enforce the laws designed to protect consumers like myself from such reprehensible conduct. Discover must be held accountable for their actions, and I request that the CFPB intervenes swiftly to address these violations and ensure compliance with all pertinent federal statutes. I appreciate your prompt attention to this matter and look forward to a decisive resolution that upholds the rights and protections afforded to consumers.
