Issue: Struggling to pay your bill
Subissue: Credit card company won't work with you while you're going through financial hardship
Consumer Complaint: I informed Discover in XX/XX/2023 before my due date on XX/XX/XXXX that I had filed for unemployment, and was waiting on my unemployment to get processed. Everyone, especially credit card companies, are aware of the lengthy process. It takes weeks to get your application reviewed, then approved. Once approved for unemployment, you then have to wait to receive your funds which Unemployment gives you no ETA on. Between the time I informed Discover and now, XX/XX/XXXX, I have received a threatening letter stating that they will INCREASE my monthly payment. A day early ( and before 30 days late ) they reported my account delinquent. All " payment options '' they've provided are exponentially higher than my normal monthly minimum, despite that I have reported I have NO income for the time being and until I receive my unemployment funds.

Issue: Fees or interest
Subissue: Problem with fees
Consumer Complaint: On XX/XX/2023, I completed and used a balance transfer check that Discover Card sent to my mailing address. There were two offers advertised in the promotional mailing that Discover sent to me : one with a fixed upfront balance transfer fee and no interest for a promotional period, and one with no upfront balance transfer fee and a non-zero interest rate for a promotional period. I was under the impression I was using a check for the latter promotion, however I discovered that the check I used was for the former promotion. I contacted Discover on XX/XX/2023 upon finding the error. It is Discover 's position that once a balance transfer has been completed, the company can not change the charges associated. This seems odd since Discover owns the loan and I called as soon as the error was made clear to me. I spoke with two different people and they refused to do anything on my behalf. I would note that the first person I spoke with also said that Discover " encourages people to call the 800 number when using a balance transfer. '' This is inconsistent with the action of mailing blank balance transfer checks on a bi-weekly basis with multiple offers. After completing the call on XX/XX/2023, I repaid the entire balance transfer and the fee ( 3 % of the balance transfer ). It was never my intention to carry the balance, which is why I had been seeking the balance transfer option with no upfront fees. A 3 % fee for a 15-day loan appears incredibly high ; it translates to a 105 % APR.
