Issue: Getting a credit card
Subissue: Application denied
Consumer Complaint: I applied for a discover card on XX/XX/2023 and I received a denial letter in the mail XX/XX/2023 saying that my application was denied due to the status of existing/ prior discover card account. Now I have had a discover card in the past but the account was always kept current and in fact the account ended up being closed by Discover due to inactivity. So I am unsure why I would not be eligible to reapply for another Discover card. When I called Discover about this matter the representative could only tell me that at this time I wasnt approved and that I would have to retry some other time. In my opinion this is a practice of discrimination and bias and possibly a violation of the FCRA because they are restricting my right to obtain credit without having a legal reason for denying my right.

Issue: Getting a credit card
Subissue: Card opened without my consent or knowledge
Consumer Complaint: On XXXX XXXX A company called Discover Financial Service decided they would check my credit of which I never applied for any kind of service from them. Someone applied for a credit card in my name, I don't know if the card was issued or not. The credit check was on my XXXX credit report I did not apply for any credit from anyone. I have a block and a freeze on all 3 credit reports but someone was able to get into my credit report and check it without my consent. What is the since of having a block and a freeze on your credit if these companies can still get into your credit reports. I did not ask this company to check my credit for any reason. On my reports it states that they are to call me first before they do any credit checking on me. I have my phone number listed for anyone to call me before they check my credit. They checked my credit without my permission. They checked it on XXXX XXXX. How they got into my credit I have no idea, I don't even know it a card was issued.

Consumer Complaint: Former case number : XXXX - XXXX Dear Sir and Madam, Due to the complaint email I sent to you on XX/XX/XXXX regarding the handling of customer issues by the management of CISCOVER company, DISCOVER company received your letter and replied to me ( see attachment ). These three reply letters come from three different places, of course, the same CISCOVER company. Among them, the letter from XXXX XXXX, Ohio requesting a new card for me made me very cautious, as the company had already changed the card for me in XX/XX/XXXX, citing that the merchant would no longer automatically receive payments. But he added the so-called " total price fee of {$41.00} '' to the new account in XX/XX/XXXX. In this way, the merchant 's automatic payment will be added to my account again. If this time, DISCOVER 's company in XXXX XXXX, Ohio will give me a new card. Although I did not request a card change, based on my recent interaction with DISCOVER company, I have found that the policy management and quality of DISCOVER company 's management personnel are insufficient, and I am not willing to have a conversation with such companies.

Consumer Complaint: Around the XXXX of XX/XX/2023 I attempted to cash refund check after they closed my account. When it was denied due to a stop payment. I have left several messages to inquire why I have not received any explanation or return call after several messages left. After my first complaint it seems retaliatory in direct response to the complaint filed. They have my XXXX dollars for 5 months now with out my having access. That is a federal crime is it not theft and fraud. I've got no recourse to retrieve my money or fix the damage they have done to my credit. XXXX points for an account they never opened but reported closed and kept my money. I need direction o. How to proceed. Clearly I can only keep calling but at what point do I receive compensation for there having kept my money for the better part of the year and causing me great harm in my attempt to obtain a better credit rating.

Consumer Complaint: To DISCOVER CARD in reference to your response from CFPB Hello, I would like to respond to some of these claim in your response : On XX/XX/, you spoke with a Discover representative regarding account activity. We note you shared intentions to buy gift cards for someone, the representative advised you of the possible scam, and you shared intention to use the entirety of your credit line along with questions involving frequency of verifying account activity. Response : I did purchase gift cards but there is no record of me stating that I would want to use the entirety of the credit line for this. In terms of the transactions with the other merchants, I have no idea what that is. There is no way that my balance of XXXX is accurate. I did purchase a few gift cards but in no way does it add up to that balance. I received the bank statements from you and it does not reflect. Also, the merchants that I am disputing are not related to these gift cards. On XX/XX/, you withdrew your fraud claims, taking financial responsibility for the transactions previously disputed as fraud. Notice of this action was sent to you and a copy of the letter has been enclosed. Subsequently the account was debited, reapplying the transactions to the account balance Response : Yes, this is accurate because I opened up an identity theft case and I was advised by a legal team to say that. However, I called a few months later and said that I wanted to reopen this investigation. Note, you already added all the correct provisional credit back into my account before I requested this case to be closed because you determined that it was fraudulent. After I knew that I was not going to be in any legal trouble and there was nothing that would happen : I wanted to reopen the case and I requested multiple times but you kept saying that I was now responsible for the transactions after you credited the account and determined it was fraud which is absurd and wrong. I did not authorize these transactions and I should not be responsible for this balance. I will continue to fight this and can provide you with whatever necessary.
