Issue: Fees or interest
Subissue: Problem with fees
Consumer Complaint: This issue began as of the closing XX/XX/19 with a payment due date of XX/XX/19 in which the annual membership fee was displayed under fees of {$190.00}. There were XXXX purchases that posted on account XX/XX/19 and an automatic payment charged to the American Express on XX/XX/19. ( I had forgotten about the latter ) I immediately contacted the merchant which charged {$20.00} monthly and switched to a different credit card. I also contacted American Express customer service to make sure the account was cancelled. I wanted to avoid the annual fee since I possessed other cards with no member fees. I contacted the company at least five times since then. They state when they receive the complaint that they will investigate and provide with temporary credit. They have also credited me with {$150.00}. Although, continue to charge the annual fee with late fees of {$40.00} each month. I have asked for a waiver or even a pro rated fee. Being that I informed them I wanted to cancel the card as soon as I realized that there was a fee. I suggest the fee be more conspicuous or highlighted in some way.. At this time I show a balance of almost {$500.00}. This debt has effected my credit reporting and score negatively, as well as increased rates on mortgage loans.

Issue: Advertising and marketing, including promotional offers
Subissue: Didn't receive advertised or promotional terms
Consumer Complaint: In the fall of 2021 I received an offer about XXXX American Express cards with a very high bonus award. I applied for and received the card and met the spending criteria but have not received the bonus awards. When I called to check on it, I was told I was ineligible for the bonus because of past cards. I do not recall any information being provided to me indicating that I was ineligible to receive this award. I believe it's misleading advertising for the company to send a solicitation to a customer who is ineligible for the bonus. I would never have applied for this card except for the bonus offer because I have another great card with 2 % cash back. Between the annual fee of {$95.00} and the forgone cash back, I am out hundreds of dollars because I used the American Express Card -- not to mention the value of the award. I spent an hour and a half on the phone trying to understand this and get some type of relief but got nothing but " I'm very sorry but we can not help you. '' The representative did say that these awards are " Once in a lifetime '' which further underscores the fraudulent nature of sending solicitations to an ineligible individual.

Consumer Complaint: XXXX XXXX XXXXXXXX sent me a letter on XX/XX/2021 about an alleged debt owed to American Express. I sent a cease and desist as well a debt validation letter with a green receipt that was received on XX/XX/2021. For the validation of the debt XXXX sent me statements and terms and conditions pages. They never provided me the address and name of the original creditor. They have since taken legal action against me and filed a lawsuit. This is a violation because a debt collector can not be an attorney.
