Subissue: Confusing or misleading advertising about the credit card
Consumer Complaint: I received an email from American Ex Expeess saying I have been preapproved for the American Express gold card, offering me XXXX points as an introductory offer. Of course, when I applied, I was denied. I contacted them about this and they said pre-approved means that I still have to apply and can be rejected and that these offers are automatically generated. Having your credit report pulled for your application to be ultimately declined has a negative effect on your credit score. I also had to waste time, reading the email, reading and filling out the application, contacting asking about this, and then finally time used to fill out this report

Consumer Complaint: American Express clawed back the reward points that they gave me XXXX year after I upgrade my card! I used my Amex XXXX previously and I received XXXX promotion last year and promise to give me XXXX reward points after I upgrade to Amex XXXX Preferred. I did receive the XXXX points after I upgraded it and I keep using it until XX/XX/XXXX this year. And it has been almost XXXX year ( few weeks left ). And I called the American Express Representative and asked if I can downgraded it back to Amex EveryDay after the upgrade cycle is fulfilled without affecting my account 's reward points. She said no worries, the downgrade would not affect. And I trusted her. They immediately downgrade my account. But my account was deducted XXXX reward points few days after I called. I doubt that they are trying to tempt me into this situation. I also called to complain about this and told them they made a mistake. I was planning to fulfill the upgrade term before the downgrade. They just said the terms are just there and the deduction is normal. The downgrade can not be reverted. They deduct the membership fees but did not give me the reward points. They won twice. I felt so disappointed on American Express and I just want to let others know how American Express treat their customers.

Consumer Complaint: I own an American Express XXXX XXXX XXXX and have been a customer of American Express for over XXXX XXXX My credit card account is always paid in full and has been on autopay. For some reason, it was not on this month and the payment did not post immediately I was charged a {$29.00} dollars fee on XX/XX/XXXX. I did not receive any notification of the set fee. While checking my accounting two days later, I discovered the charge and immediately paid my entire balance and contacted American Express. I explained what happened and requested the fee to be refunded since I am a long-time customer and even have a significant amount of cash in their savings account. The response received was " you don't qualify '' as I inquired as to why I was told that there are many variables and the system just denied it. Needless to was this is very disappointing and difficult to accept that a company like this is not willing to provide high-quality customer service regardless of whether you have been a very long-term customer.

Consumer Complaint: I initially applied for an AMEX XXXX XXXX Gold back in XX/XX/XXXX. The offer was cancelled according to Amex because I changed to an AMEX XXXXXXXX XXXX When I made the change back in XX/XX/XXXX over the phone the Rep. did not advise me that I was going to lose my credit card offer and there was no offer with the XXXX card. I had asked Amex to pull the call and listen to the conversation. They have not done so and have dismissed all of my inquiries into the matter since XX/XX/XXXX. During this period, I opened a personal Amex XXXX gold and when I filled the application on their website, I was told that I would not be eligible for the offer because I already had the offer in the business card. This of course did not make sense because they are two separate cards ( one business and one personal ). Now Amex is contending that I did not receive the offer on my personal card because of the business. However, a month ago after multiple calls an Amex Rep told me that I lost business card offer because I changed from business gold to platinum. If I lost the offer on the business side, why I am not eligible to get it on my personal card? I called again XX/XX/XXXX and was told by another Rep. that they are still investigating the matter. When I asked why is taking months from my first inquiry, she was not able to respond and disconnected the call. I need assistance to get to the bottom of the bait and switch tactics that Amex is employing with their credit cards.

Issue: Getting a credit card
Subissue: Application denied
Consumer Complaint: American Express declined my application for a XXXX Credit Card on the basis of 'too many new accounts '. After walking through my credit report and detailing the number of new accounts and the timeline of opening these accounts, company representatives have explained this 'does not seem like too many accounts ' - therefore bringing into question if this was inequitable / discriminatory consumer lending practices. I would like American Express to explain, quantifiably, how many accounts over what period causes a decline in order to match this information with my credit report and see if this was equitable or not. Recommended solution : 1 ) Appeal and manual review of the application, 2. ) Contact from American Express outlining its policies that quantifiably explain the rationale for decline ( equitably ), and/or 3. ) company retraction of hard inquiry from my credit report.

Consumer Complaint: I applied and was approved for a XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX with a signup bonus of XXXX bonus points after spending {$2000.00} within 3 months with the card. I spent well over {$2000.00} in less than 2 months and i did not receive any bonus miles. i have never had this card prior to recently being approved, and according to American Express terms I am allowed one sign on bonus per card per lifetime. I called several times over thee course of 3 months and received no help, I was told there was a pop up telling me i would not be eligible for the sign up bonus but i explained to them several times i never encountered that pop up/ page. After it became apparent Amex would not uphold their original agreement i downgraded the card.
