Issue: Problem when making payments
Subissue: Problem during payment process
Consumer Complaint: I have had an American Express credit card for 40 years. XXXX months ago I accepted an offer to enroll one of my purchases in the XXXX XXXX XXXX The purchase was for {$2900.00}. The agreement stated that when I made my regular monthly payments, the first {$240.00} of each payment amount would be applied to the XXXX XXXX purchase of {$2900.00} for the next 12 months and any payment amount over the {$240.00} would be applied to any remaining non-plan balance. On XX/XX/2022 I made a payment of {$1400.00} of which {$240.00} should have been applied to my XXXX XXXX balance and the rest to my remaining non-plan balance ( which included {$1300.00} in charges made at the end of XXXX, prior to my payment ). Instead, American Express refused to apply the excess payment to the non-plan balance and instead applied {$1300.00} of my payment to the XXXX XXXX balance. This caused my interest bearing non- XXXX balance to carry over to the next month incurring an interest charge and making my non-XXXX balance increase to {$1300.00} instead of the XXXX balance it would have been had my XX/XX/2022 payment been applied correctly. I have called XXXX XXXX times to try and get the payment applied correctly which has not led to any correction. They simply say that they have no way of correctly going back and adjusting the payment since the computer does everything and there is no way to make any changes.

Issue: Closing your account
Subissue: Company closed your account
Consumer Complaint: American express has been stalling and i did everything one can ask for. i sent them the remittance coupon to settle the debt. They are just been stubborn and hard headed. these people are greedy. At this point I am covering my tracks to show prove to the pending lawsuit as evidence of them refusing to credit the account. on XX/XX/XXXX they sent me an email that they will be closing my account on XX/XX/10 XXXX days before I wrote my initial cfpb complaint. All bills are PREPAID. All obligations is owed to the united states. The term obligation or other security of the United States includes all bonds, certificates of indebtedness, national bank currency , Federal Reserve notes, Federal Reserve bank notes, coupons, United States notes, Treasury notes, gold certificates, silver certificates, fractional notes, certificates of deposit, bills, checks, or drafts for money, drawn by or upon authorized officers of the United States, stamps and other representatives of value, of whatever denomination, issued under any Act of Congress, and canceled United States stamps. They keep trying to get me to call to settle the debt when I have already sent them multiple letters. this is also a breach of privacy rights according to 15 usc 1692 c, Without the prior consent of the consumer given directly to the debt collector or the express permission of a court of competent jurisdiction, a debt collector may not communicate with a consumer in connection with the collection of any debt. This is a HARASSMENT! also threatening to send my private information to the credit bureaus is identity theft or selling the debt. i have given them more than enough chances. At this point its ridiculous. They want the fight so that's what will have to happen. the bureaus have 4 days not fifteen in a case of identity theft.

Issue: Advertising and marketing, including promotional offers
Subissue: Confusing or misleading advertising about the credit card
Consumer Complaint: I opened an Amex XXXX XXXX card in XX/XX/2022. As a part of opening the card, there was a promotion of XXXX skymiles points if XXXX or XXXX $ was spent within the first XXXX months. I used the card to make a $ XXXX purchase within the first XXXX days. I called to confirm that I had reached the terms of the promotion and to ask when I would receive the skymiles points. I was informed that I had achieved the required terms and that I would receive the Skymiles points after XXXX months or XXXX statement cycles. After that conversation, I called to inquire about closing my XXXX Amex gold card. I asked if there would be any issues with the points on the XXXX card or the XXXX card. I was told no issues and continued with closing the Amex XXXX gold card. Today XX/XX/2022, I called to inquire about the promotional Amex XXXX XXXX card points that I was told I would receive after the XXXX cycles/months. I was informed that since I closed the gold card within the XXXX months/cycles that it had voided the terms of the promotional offer. The terms of the offer that were cited are the following : " Welcome offer not available to applicants who have or have had this or previous versions of this Card. We may also consider the number of American Express Cards you have opened and closed as well as other factors in making a decision on your welcome offer eligibility. ". I told the representative that I was misled and that the wording in the terms was very vague. I asked to talk with a manager and was told that I was talking to the equivalent of a manager. The issue was not rectified during the call and I submitting this to ensure that the issue is appropriately investigated.

Issue: Fees or interest
Subissue: Problem with fees
Consumer Complaint: American Express did not send us a monthly bill and as a result we incurred late fees. When cancelling the card as a result, they made calculation errors which resulted in further fees for me, and they disputed that my annual fee should be refunded. I had to call four times to try to get a resolution and despite having a copy of the recorded call, they would not let me have a copy to prove that their employee had erred and my annual fee should be returned.

Issue: Trouble using your card
Subissue: Credit card company won't increase or decrease your credit limit
Consumer Complaint: I have one account with American Express ( AMEX ) where I requested a credit limit. Amex asked me to either upload my bank statements through their portal or to link my bank accounts to consider my requests. I tried to upload the documents via the portal multiple times and kept getting an error, so I linked my bank accounts and gave AMEX access to my bank details instead. To my surprise, AMEX did not review my request with the excuse that I did not follow the instructions. My account shows as correctly linked at the AMEX portal, and an AMEX rep confirmed that it was correctly linked. I called and chatted with AMEX around XX/XX/12 and was told that my request would be reopened, yet nothing has happened. Multiple calls and chats have resulted in no actions or answers from AMEX. I did get a call from someone, but I asked her to call me later ( because I was at work ), and she never followed up. At this point, I think AMEX is purposedly ignoring my requests.
