Issue: Getting a credit card
Subissue: Card opened as result of identity theft or fraud
Consumer Complaint: In XXXX of 2022, XXXX American Express accounts were fraudulently opened in my name without my knowledge. I have never applied and have never opened any account with American Express previously. The criminals charged more than {$38000.00} to these accounts. I was made aware of these account only via my credit reports. At the time, I was a victim of major ID Theft. Multiple bank accounts I already had were hacked as well as a number of other credit cards. The criminals also physically walked into a bank and using forged, fraudulent military ID cards, withdrew {$1500.00} in cash out of my accounts. All other banks and credit card companies have determined everything I was experiencing as fraud due to this ID Theft. American Express refuses to accept my dispute. I have called American Express multiple times and no one from their fraud investigation team will contact me even though I was told multiple times I would hear from them. I faxed them XXXX pages of supporting documents including a lengthy police report acknowledging the fraud and ID Theft that I was a victim of, and yet American Express denies my dispute. On top of this, American Express refuses to give me any reason whatsoever as to why they are denying my dispute.

Subissue: Confusing or misleading advertising about the credit card
Consumer Complaint: Hello- I am relatively happy XXXX XXXX XXXX client. They have a 'Plan It ' promotion for any larger charges ( I think $ XXXX ), where an individual can have the charge spread out over a number months with a small monthly fee. Once the balance of the 'Plan It ' charge is paid off ( even if earlier than the selected plan is completed ) the fees stop. All of this is very reasonable and I have happily used this service in the past. However, I planned to use this service for eight charges on my AmEx during the month of XX/XX/XXXX. The total fees for the month were relatively nominal ( {$21.00} ). However, I never used the service, as I ended up having enough cash to pay the entirety of my outstanding balance by the due date for the cycle ( which was XX/XX/XXXX ) - - this includes all of the charges I selected as XXXXPlan It " charges. However, since I never carried a balance past the due date for the month 's charges, including the eight I selected the XXXXPlan It " program to be used for, the charges were all paid within the standard grace period of the billing cycle, meaning I never used the XXXXPlan It ' function/product/service. However, even though I never used it, I was still charged the monthly fees for all of them ( i.e., the {$21.00} ). I connected with AmEx, expressed essentially everything above and suggested that this was a predatory approach. They did issue me a one-time credit in the amount of {$10.00}. Candidly, it's not the money- it's the slimy practice. I always want to pay what I owe, for the things I use, but being charged something for something one doesn't use and saying it's a standard 'practice/policy ' seems unjust and not right, so I wanted to alert this Bureau to this practice.

Consumer Complaint: I signed up for the American Express Business card in XX/XX/XXXX, but within a month I requested to close the account because business was not good. I called American Express to cancel my card and they had me connect to a manager to try to hold my account to stay open so they waived my membership fee and asked me to try the card and if I don't have any use of it, I may cancel the card. I agreed and used the card for sometime but then When I called to cancel my card in XX/XX/XXXX, my balance was XXXX and had my card cancelled. No communication was made regarding any pending charges, then two weeks later I was charged a membership fee on my cancelled card. American Express also cancelled my personal credit with all accrued miles, points and benefits. Account Ending XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX Credit Card XXXX

Consumer Complaint: American Express advertised a promotional offer for the American Express Delta Gold card when I was purchasing flights on XXXX XXXX ' website. It was a welcome bonus ( 0 % APR for the first year, {$250.00}, and XXXX miles if I spent {$3000.00} in 3 months ) written in their advertisement. I was attracted to this welcome Bonus and recently came to know after checking my account that I am not eligible for that offer without any notice, and there was interest applied on purchases. I contacted American Express, and they said something popped up that said I was not eligible for a welcome offer. But they approved my credit card and didn't let me know I was not offered the welcome Bonus in any e-mail. I found this lack of clarity in informing customers of their intention. During our conversation today ( XX/XX/2022 ), they offered to waive the interest on the purchase, but I refused to take that offer as I thought this wouldn't solve the position of clarity.

Issue: Trouble using your card
Subissue: Credit card company won't increase or decrease your credit limit
Consumer Complaint: American Express lowered my credit limit from {$20000.00} to {$12000.00} and told me I had to pay about {$3000.00} and if I did then they would raise my credit limit back up. I have never been late on a payment or missed a payment with them since the start of my account over 4 years ago. This took my credit usage up on my credit score while I am in the middle of applying for a small business loan. Again, I have never done anything for their company to label me as a liability to lower my credit limit. I have never missed a payment on this credit card or any other card, loan, or mortgage.

Issue: Problem when making payments
Subissue: Problem during payment process
Consumer Complaint: Amex pulled funds repeatedly from my account for a payment, even after I processed the payment manually myself. They additionally charged me a late fee. I wasted 30+ mins with a chat rep on XX/XX/XXXX, trying to get them to stop pulling funds from my bank because my bank is charging me fees for so many transactions. Attached document shows the bank fee and the number of times they have pulled the {$72.00}. Their system can not recognize that multiple credits have already been posted to the account. They need to revamp their system to instill some basic checks and intelligence and train their reps to not waste customers time by providing accurate information. The Chat rep could not help me but kept me on hold trying to check on things and then finally said that I had to call the fraud line. It looks like no one monitors that #. After being on hold for 45 mins, I hung up. So, I called the regular customer service # on XX/XX/XXXX. Amex used to be an institution with educated, polite reps. Unfortunately, no more. Their system does not work and when I called it that, the rep hung up after I was on hold for 30 mins to speak to her. Pathetic customer service.
