Issue: Getting a credit card
Subissue: Application denied
Consumer Complaint: I am writing to dispute the denial of my credit card application by American Express and to request a reconsideration of this adverse action. My application was submitted in good faith, and I believe the denial is unjust and discriminatory. I am asserting my rights under federal law, specifically 15 USC 1602, as the original cardholder and holder in due course. The adverse action has caused financial hardship, compounded by unauthorized credit card use post-denial. I demand a prompt resolution and the reopening of my credit accounts, as well as rectification of the adverse action on my credit report. Failure to address this matter may result in further legal actions, and I am prepared to file a formal complaint with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and the Attorney General if necessary. Thank you for your immediate attention to this matter. I expect a timely response and resolution. Sincerely, XXXX : XXXX the date of this letter written to them was XX/XX/2023 and I have yet to hear from american express regarding this matter

Issue: Trouble using the card
Subissue: Trouble using the card to spend money in a store or online
Consumer Complaint: I was recently gifted {$120.00} American Express gift card. Based on the site, it says you should be able to use the gift card at any retailer that accepts XXXX, and to just add the credentials in like a regular credit card and it should work. However, after my any attempts on multiple websites, transactions continually got declined. I made sure to follow the instructions and was trying to make purchases that were lower than the gift card amount. On XX/XX/2024, I contacted American Express Customer service who turned out to be incredibly unhelpful. Not only was I on hold for 3 HOURS - when I finally did get connected they claimed the failed transactions were for my protection. The card was declined at major retailers such as XXXX, XXXX, XXXXXXXX XXXX, for fraud protection.Their only solution they provided was to try other shops... ridiculous.

Consumer Complaint: Received {$250.00} American Express gift card from my employer. Attempted to add the gift card to my XXXX wallet as a payment method. This is something I have done in past years with no problem. However, on all attempts to add the card to the XXXX wallet, I receive a message that the card was " declined by the issuing bank ''. Called AMEX and was transferred around, had the call dropped, re-called etc. Finally got a rep who said that the card is valid and that there was " no reason for it to be declined by AMEX, unless the merchant did not ask for the 4-digit security code ''. Actually, XXXX does require the security code, so why did AMEX decline the charge? They suggested I try it at another merchant, but I want to use the card at the merchant of my choice. XXXX does take AMEX cards, so AMEX should not have declined this charge.

Consumer Complaint: I received an American Express gift card as a bonus from my work. It is for {$1000.00}. I still have {$460.00} available to use on it but every time I try to use it it gets declined. I have tried to use it for groceries, gas, online and in store. Nothing. I called customer service, and they tell me that they are aware there is a problem, but they can not do anything. Try again in 24 hours. I keep trying but it keeps getting declined. I am attaching a copy of a typical decline notice and a screenshot showing the balance still available to use.

Consumer Complaint: I was given XXXX American Express gift cards, each valued at {$100.00} for XXXX, and am unable to use them on XXXX in any capacity. This is unusual because I have previously been able to use them on the site in years past. Every time I try to place an order, I am given the message " Payment revision needed '' and the prepaid cards have outstanding/pending {$.00} cent charges that are not being resolved on either XXXX or AMEX 's end to verify that the card exists and is not fraudulent. I did a bit of research online and this does not seem to be an isolated incident and appears to stem from the fact that AMEX does not allow the regestration of billing addresses for prepaid cards and due to a policy change at XXXX, and other online retailers, that the payment method is outright declined, even though there are a number of XXXX based stores listed on the AMEX site that should accept the form of payment, linked below. https : //www.americanexpress.com/en-us/maps/online? key=amazon

Consumer Complaint: Im writing in hopes you can assist me with a major setback in my life. Back in XX/XX/2023 there was death in our family which created a ton of complications for me. The entire experience was traumatic and has set me back emotionally and mentally. I totally spaced it and has never had a late payment with this company. One of which was I mistakenly misplaced my XXXX XXXX statement & had forgotten about until I received my most recent statement. Once I realized I was behind I immediately sent in my payment but in XX/XX/2023 you reported me 30 days late. I make it a point to maintain a great credit history & you can review my history and see Ive never had an issue with making my payment ( s ) on time. This late payment is now impacting my ability to get a new loan & has adding additional strain & complications with my family life. I understand it was my responsibility but Im hoping with my good payment history & long-standing positive relationship with you, could find it in your heart to help me by removing the late payment as a courtesy of my hard times? I would love if you could in your good grace help me because I need to find a new house due to the death and the late payment is impacting my ability to get a loan. The removal of the late payment would allow me to move forward with many areas of my life & alleviate some of the struggle Im enduring. I would truly appreciate the favor & goodwill... Consumer Complaint: Hello, so I have a few Amex prepaid gift cards totaling the amount of {$990.00} from XXXX gift cards total. I have tried to use these gift cards everywhere and they get declined every single time. I reached out to Amex and they told me to make sure the amount Im using is covered fully by the balance which they were. They also suggested using the card physically in the store vs using it online but I did state that I was using it in a physical store and it get getting declined and every location I tried to use it at assured me it wasnt on their end but an Amex end. Amex only resolution was to mark my cards lost or stolen but they have not been lost or stolen, I have them here. And its not XXXX gift card its XXXX seperate gift cards that all get declined. Im not sure what marking them as lost or stolen will do, I feel like this is their sneaky way of keeping peoples money

Consumer Complaint: I have been trying to use the Amex gift cards for purchases online with different retailers that accept Amex. I was only able to use one lower value card, the rest keep getting declined ( they are higher value ). Amex has stated that their gift cards should be accepted everywhere where Amex cards are accepted - but that is a blatant lie and scam.
