Consumer Complaint: I am completely frustrated at this point. Few months back I bought this prepaid American Express gift card. Till date, this card has been declined at least 4 times. I have tried using it at XXXX, XXXX XXXX, XXXX, and XXXX. This card absolutely will not go through and I am unable to make ANY purchases at all with this card. Whenever I call customer service, all they say is that I should try using this again. They blatantly refuse to believe that there is something wrong with the card and that it doesn't work anywhere. This is blatant consumer abuse.

You have to do it in a call or on a chatbot, where you suffer signifiant delays and an interrogation as they try to convince you not to cancel. It should be as easy to cancel an account as it is to open one.

FIRST LET ME STATE THAT I AM NEWLY XXXX XXXX XXXX SERVNG IN THE XXXX XXXX XXXX. I WAS ENTICED TO APPLY FOR THIS CARD FOR 2 REASONS : 1. BEING AN XXXX XXXX MILITARY SERVICEMEN MY ANNUAL FEE IS WAIVED BY AMEX. 2. MY SISTER IS GETTING MARRIED XXXX IN XXXX AND I WANTED TO USE THE POINTS TO HELP WITH BOOKING MY HOTEL ACCOMMODATIONS WHILE ATTENDING HER WEDDING WHICH THIS CARD ALLOWS USING POINTS ON VARIOUS HOTELS. WHEN I COMPLETED THE APPLICATION I WAS IMMEDIATELY APPROVED AND ADDED MY MOTHER AS AN AUTHORIZED USER SO SHE COULD HELP ME EARN THESE POINTS FASTER BY USING THE CARD AS WELL AND PAYING IT OFF AS QUICK AS POSSIBLE. TO THAT POINT, BETWEEN MOM AND I WE CHARGED WELL OVER THE REQUIRED $ XXXX IN CARD PURCHASES. WHEN I CALLED AMEX TO FIND OUT WHY I HAD NO POINTS SHOWING FOR MY PURCHASES THEY INFORMED ME THAT I WAS NOT APPROVED FOR THE PROMOTION AS IT IS SELECTIVE. THE ONLY REASON I EVER APPLIED WAS BECAUSE OF THIS PROMOTION. I AM XXXX. I SERVE IN THE XXXX. I DO NOT HAVE THE ABILITY WITH MY LOW SALARY TO JUST SHOP UNCONTROLLABLY AND PAY OFF $ XXXX. THEY ALSO SAID THAT BECAUSE I HAVE ANOTHER AMEX CARD I WASNT ELIGIBLE, NOWHERE DOES IT SAY THIS ON THE APPLICATION PORTAL. MY OTHER AMEX CARD IS A XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX. THOSE MILES ARE ONLY GOOD FOR AIR FARE ON XXXX, NOT HOTELS, NOT OTHER AIRLINES OR CAR RENTALS SUCH AS THIS PLATINUM CARD. THIS CARD IS FOR MULTIPLE AWARD USES SO THERE SHOULD BE NO INELIGIBLE ISSUE. I SPENT OVER $ XXXX AND HAVE ALREADY PAID THE CARD OFF. I DESERVE THE POINTS PROMISED. WHAT A DIS SERVICE TO ALL CONSUMERS AND WHAT A BUNCH OF MISLEADING MARKETING ON TOP OF IT ALL. I HAVE ATTACHED THE APPROVAL EMAIL, THE WELCOME EMAIL, MY CHAT WITH THE AMEX CUSTOMER SERVICE REP AS PROOF TO ACCOMMODATE THIS COMPLAINT. Consumer Complaint: I filed a complaint via CFPB against American Express of wrongdoing. American Express sent me correspondence stating a credit was issued but it never was. I tried the rectify the issue multiple times with their customer service representatives to no avail. I reached out to CFPB which triggered an internal AMEX investigation. Whereby, I suspect, it was discovered that my assertions were accurate. As the credit has been correctly issued since then. Kindly refer to the correspondence sent to me by American Express. Which brings me to today. AMEX limited 2 of my several cards with them. I suspect a repercussion of challenging their billing and credit mishaps. I am attaching correspondence of their wrongdoing. And correspondence received ( 2 accounts in 24 hours ) limiting 2 of my cards.

Over the past month I have tried to use the card at a multitude of different online stores, gas pumps, adding to mobile pay, etc. just trying to spend the money I was gifted. Each transaction has been declined by Amex. Their reasoning I was told over the phone was increased security and to protect the card user. I clearly can not use the card anywhere. XXXX and XXXX have never had issues with my payments until using this card. The marketing of the gift card being accepted anywhere Amex can be used is very misleading and untrue.
