Issue: Trouble using the card
Subissue: Trouble using the card to spend money in a store or online
Consumer Complaint: Years ago I was given a gift card by someone in the amount of {$50.00}. I completely forgot about the card until recently. On XX/XX/XXXX, I decided to use the card at XXXX, and when I tried to pay for my purchase was informed that there were not funds. I called American Express on XX/XX/XXXX and spoke with their representative, who told me that American Express had taken the funds out of the gift card as it was not use, and I can get contact XXXX to request for them to send me a refund check or a replacement card ; informed that I need to provide a copy of the gift card front and back, copy of my ID, my address and request to send me the check. I asked him if the gift card has the expiration date, and he said that it does not expire. On XX/XX/XXXX, I e-mailed the XXXX with the issue and per advice given on XX/XX/XXXX, provided them with a copy of the gift card, my ID, my address, and request to send me the refund check. On XX/XX/XXXX, I was informed by the Prepaid Resolution Team American Express " the gift card does not have any balance on it. A refund check was issued to the registered owner/original purchaser of the gift card back in XX/XX/XXXX for the amount of {$50.00} '' and " Since refund has already been issued, unfortunately no further resolution can take place '', and " In case of any further queries, feel free to reply back ''. I replied to them on XX/XX/XXXX with request to speak with the supervisor, informed them that I " disagree that the money were taken away by the American Express, and refunded to the person ( it sounds like ) who gave the gift card to me as a gift. I was not able to benefit from the gift card because the American Express had taken away my money. Please, inform me who oversees the American Express, as I would file a complaint ''. Regretfully, no one from American Express replied.

Issue: Trouble using the card
Subissue: Trouble using the card to spend money in a store or online
Consumer Complaint: Based on the marketing of American Express, I now have Amex gift cards with {$200.00} each on them and I can not use them anywhere. AMEX is illegally keeping my money from me. They engaged in false advertising to mislead consumers into getting these cards with the promise of being able to use them universally, which is patently false. I can not find a single retailer to accept my gift cards as payment. They are universally declined. I have spent multiple hours speaking with agents on this issue and have only been told that the card can be used anywhere. Further to my dismay, I was told that the website on the back of the card provided to check your balance may or not be a fraudulent website so to not trust that either. These cards need to be discontinued as they are falsely advertised and do not function as viable commercial substance. The never-ending list of companies that will not accept these cards as payment include XXXX XXXX such as XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX, XXXX. AMEX simply gets to hold onto the funds illegally by having a product that can not be functionally used. This is totally unacceptable business practice and needs to be dealt with accordingly.

Issue: Trouble using the card
Subissue: Trouble using the card to spend money in a store or online
Consumer Complaint: I got the gift card and tried using it at different merchants in store and online. It is a {$50.00} Amex gift card. I tried using it on XXXX a few times but it didn't work. The totals of what I wanted ranged between {$43.00} and {$49.00} every time I tried. I then went to amex customer service and they said they I should trying inputing it as a credit card but that did work. I tried it in store with apple and the physical card and it didn't work. I tried it on other apps to see if I can get the money that way and it didn't work. When I went to check the balance of the card it still has {$50.00} on it. When I look at the transactions it just shows failed attempts with {$.00} being deduct but refunded after each transaction. Then the charges would eventually go away.

Consumer Complaint: I received an American Express gift card from my employer last XXXX. The initial balance was {$500.00} and I was able to use {$410.00}. At this point the card has stopped functioning and it is declined at every purchase opportunity I make. Issue: Problem when making payments
Subissue: Problem during payment process
Consumer Complaint: I have had the American Express card for over 4 years and never missed a payment. From {$2000.00} my limit is now {$13000.00}. Last night while I still had over {$9000.00}, I tried to make a purchase and it wouldn't go through. I called Amex and was told my limit had been reduced from {$13000.00} to {$3900.00}, the exact balance on the card. My limit was reduced in the middle of a transaction. I had checked my balance before trying to make the transaction. I was told my limit was cut because I have not been making payments and my credit score is low which is very untrue. I have never missed a payment or made late payments in over 4 years and there is nothing wrong with my credit score. I could not complete the transaction and I was left stranded because now I can not pay for the bid I won at a car auction with XXXX This drastic action will also hurt my credit score and raise my credit card utilization.

Subissue: Problem with rewards from credit card
Consumer Complaint: Question about a reward and policy regarding reward redemption and a potential misleading / deceptive item. First call on XX/XX/2023, second on XX/XX/2023. Both times was promised a callback from a supervisor to support resolution within 24 hours. Neither time did anyone from American Express attempt to reach out or fulfill the commitment to have a supervisor call to help resolve issue. And after two unsuccessful attempts to resolve, and no return phone communication despite direct promise from both service reps to have a return call, decided to escalate to a complaint.
