Issue: Dealing with my lender or servicer
Subissue: Trouble with how payments are handled
Consumer Complaint: I have been making extra payments on my Nelnet serviced loans since I started making payments. My minimum payment is like {$120.00} a month and I have been paying {$200.00} a month. I just figured out they 've just been advancing my due date and applying the extra payments equally to my XXXX loans. XXXX loan has an interest rate over 6 % while the other is like 3.5 %. When I called them, first they told me that 's the only way to do it. Then they told me they do it that way to help me pay over my smaller loan ( with a lower interest rate ) first. There is no way to change the application of the payments online and you have to dig through the help to find out the only way to do it is contact them. I emailed them, did n't hear anything back and it took me a while, some yelling and 4 holds to get the folks on the phone to change it moving forward. The effect is they 've charged me a ton more in interest on the XXXX I have overpaid that went to the 3.5 % loan instead of the 6 % + loan ... it 's XXXX.

Consumer Complaint: My Nelnet loan was paid in full, to a XXXX balance, on XXXX/XXXX/16. Nelnet then withdrew another payment from my checking account on XXXX/XXXX/16, even though I had a XXXX balance showing on my online account 5 days prior. A phone rep said the withdrawal of extra funds past the XXXX balance was my fault, since I did n't cancel autopay. I asked where the policy of taking money from customers with a XXXX balance was on their website ; I have never heard of any company that auto debits customers with a XXXX balance. The rep said I will get a refund back 4 to 6 weeks ( with no interest for me of course ). Nelnet needs to stop the practice of taking money from people with a XXXX balance. A XXXX account balance should trigger a Stop Pay. And if Nelnet does over bill, they should refund any money they took in error immediately, not 4-6 weeks later. I requested written communication from them describing exactly how and when they intend to refund the money ; I 'm waiting to get a response.

Consumer Complaint: I have a student loan that I did take out. I am really frustrated that when i had XXXX back in 2010. I was not allowed a deferment or a forbearance becuaeI was not actively looking for a full-time job. I would like consideration to have the interest during that time and thereafter to be removed from my account and re-adjust the amount I owe. I would also like to be able to refinance at a lower rate and have it retroactive to the time of the consolidation of my loan.

Consumer Complaint: Firstmark Services manages several groups of student loans. They do not provide a history of monthly principle balances, nor will they upon request. They will also not mail this information to me. I believe they are mismanaging the principle amount and accruing interest on my loans. They also have made it exceedingly difficult to pay in excess of the minimum payments as I see fit. That is, they deliberately split large payments to spread across my multiple loans, so as to have the smallest impact on principal balance, despite multiple requests to the contrary. I have written, emailed, and spoken to representatives several times in an attempt to resolve these issues and obtain the requested information, and each time am provided with no updates, nor are the changes I request implemented. I believe they are managing loans in a bad faith fashion, and deliberately hindering the repayment process. Further, their website was recently updated and has been riddled with issues impacting the ability of fiscally responsible loan recipients to manage their debt. For instance, statements are not generated unless there is a balance due. However, I pay the loans and a frequency exceeding the time for which a balance would be generated. I therefore am unable to see the principle balance as affected following each payment. As an actuary, I find that the calculations for balances as calculated by myself, do not coincide with the balances generated by Firstmark Services.

Consumer Complaint: The loan servicer is Nelnet. As a borrower, I request repayment plans through the XXXX website, which is sent to the servicer. I request this in order to have a loan summary document that I can print out for a mortgage application. However, Nelnet has a very non transparent and long process to calculate a monthly payment based on the information that I submitted. It takes too much time and as a consumer it is hurting my prospects on owning a home since mortgage applications and home purchase are time sensitive applications. I have been informed that they have been several complaints lodged against Nelnet and another company XXXX. They are not serving the consumer.

Consumer Complaint: In 2006 I cosigned a private student variable rate loan. The interest rate at the time was 8.68 percent. Today the rate is 8.75 percent .Even though the prime rate has gone down substantially the last 10 years the rate on the loan has not been reduced. It seems that the rate should have dropped. I have called the company and they have not given me a satisfactory answer. I think there is fraud here. Please advise

Consumer Complaint: I do not earn enough to pay the payment set by Nelnet and still be able to pay other bills let alone eat. I have tried since XXXX 2015 to get the payment lowered but Nelnet continues to reject my applications. The latest : They sent me a partially completed application, I completed it, sent it with my 2015 tax return and they sent me a blank application ( the same XXXX they had sent partially completed ) with the statement that they could not read the documents I sent. I have completed the application online twice and sent a completed one via email once. Calling their service reps results in nothing being done except me losing hours of time and having to hang up more than once to get to work. My mother has tried and all she gets are requests for her to call them. They have the paperwork and the proof of income. They just refuse without cause to lower the payment.

Consumer Complaint: Deptartment of Education/NELNET is reporting XXXX accounts 120 + days past due which is incorrect. My loans was originally in deferment while I was in school once I stopped going to school my loans was in forebearance which means no payments was due. NELET has been contacted several times and the last representative I spoke with looked over my account and agreed that I should not have any late payments reporting that it looked like the person who originally did my forbearance made a mistake, she gave me the information that I needed to dispute the accounts which I did and I have not heard anyhting back from NELNET. NELNET was also sent a certified validation letter which they have not responded to. If this false informoration is not updated or deleted I will see legal council and begin a civil suit.
