Issue: Dealing with your lender or servicer
Subissue: Trouble with how payments are being handled
Consumer Complaint: I recently decided to increase my student loan payment with Nelnet to pay it off sooner. When I reviewed my payment history ( attached ) online today ( XX/XX/XXXX ) I realized none of my previous payments were being applied to principal. I called Nelnet and discussed this issue with XXXX. He was very helpful and understanding but unable to remedy the situation. He admit ( on a recorded line ) many times that the loan was originally incorrectly input into their system and I should have had larger payments which at the very least covered the interest ; that's right, the payments didn't even cover the interest! These payments began 4 years ago on XX/XX/XXXX. Nelnet 's solution was re-calculate ( not the right term ) my loan and divide the payments by the remaining 20 periods which increased my monthly payment from {$55.00} to {$1000.00} ( attached ). I did not request this even though the e-mail from Nelnet ( attached ) says I did ( again they recorded the phone calls ). That's obviously an unreasonable ask and leaves them without any fault, even though this entire situation was their admitted mistake.

Consumer Complaint: I have contacted Nelnet a year ago to make a {$9000.00} payment and agreed with them to pay {$9000.00} per year which is more than one year of payments. They agreed with this and said they would make a note of it in my account. Last month I received a payment due email, so I called them, and they were confused, and had no record of the {$9000.00} payment agreement. I uploaded a document about this to their customer service. Yesterday I got another email about payment due, and this time the payment was {$160.00} more then last month. Clearly they don't understand simple math. With me only doing subbing as a teacher than working a full time teaching job ( long story ) we live month to month. This " annual '' payment is being taken from my husbands IIRA account following the instructions of our tax advisor. We don't have any more money for their random billing. Thanks.

Consumer Complaint: In XXXX, I enrolled at XXXX XXXX XXXX to obtain an education in XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX for which I had received an XXXX 's in XXXX. In order to be able to afford to go to this school, I was told to apply for a school loan ( several loans, as it turns out ) on the advice of the school rep and have been paying back since graduating. However, it has come to my attention through my brother who lives in XXXX, within the last month, that the above-mentioned school has been closed down for being a predatory school. He proceeded to send me information regarding the school, see link XXXX XXXX XXXX I have been paying off my student loans since approx XXXX onwards, 13 years later, I am now a new mom with a XXXX old baby and I can not afford to pay the remainder of my loan. I've paid off at least XXXX of this debt. It sickens me to know that the school loan provider has not once mentioned any suggestion of a solution. Since I graduated from XXXX XXXX XXXX in XXXX, there was no job placement or advice offered. I have not worked in the fashion industry utilizing my education and skills that were taught and apparently I was on the honor 's list and dean 's list for being an outstanding student - what good is that to me? When I moved back to my home, I couldn't find a job with my, now-useless, degree and was so deflated for years with a degree that has no value and has cheated me of my self-worth. The remainder of the loan is now with Nelnet. First, it was with XXXX XXXX - they crashed & burned, then XXXX took over the loan and now this new company. It's very frustrating to find out that the loan has moved companies. Who knows what arrangements have been agreed upon from one company to another.

Consumer Complaint: My complaint is against NELNET. I had my loan in deferment and I had kept my address and phone number current on my account. The last statement that I received in the mail was on XX/XX/2019. I had talked to them on the phone in XX/XX/XXXX and understood that I was still in deferment. I never received a phone call or statement or warning of any kind. Nelnet placed my account in default on XX/XX/2019, without any warning. I did not know until it was too late and I was notified by the Dept. of Ed. Now this default is on my credit report and I want NELNET to take my account back out of DEFAULT because I think that they should notify their account holders and give them a chance to take action. I think that NELNET should of made an effort to notify me and that did not happen.
