Issue: Struggling to repay your loan
Subissue: Can't temporarily delay making payments
Consumer Complaint: XXXX told me if I take out a private loan it wouldn't effect my federal aid which it did afterwards. Now XXXX XXXX XXXX, the private loan, is not honoring 6 month grace period and they cut me short on any other grace or deferments. They said requested deferment to be short but I never did. XXXX told me this wouldn't effect my federal aid and now I am stuck with private loan then have federal money. I have contacted XXXX XXXX XXXX to talk to them and they won't honor the full grace after I graduated. They wouldn't honor full deferment and I am not happy with XXXX. From what I gathered from XXXX these companies work with students not prey on students. There should be some kind of reformation on this. I've been paying this even though I lost my job and was in a car accident.

Issue: Dealing with your lender or servicer
Subissue: Trouble with how payments are being handled
Consumer Complaint: Nelnet initially alerted me on XX/XX/XXXX about a payment in the amount of {$330.00} that was due. My usual monthly payment is {$120.00}. After making one payment, I found they are again requesting the same amount. I called Nelnet on XX/XX/XXXX asking why the amount has increased. The customer service agent could offer no explanation, even after I told her I have had no changes to my income or anything recently that would increase my monthly payment. The rep then offered to have me file for an income driven repayment plan ( which I am already on ) that would lower my monthly payment to {$300.00}. I asked again why the amount has gone up so drastically, and she offered no explanation and hung up on me. I have since been trying to resubmit my income driven repayment plan but they are not allowing me to rearrange payments or anything to lessen this financial burden.

Consumer Complaint: I attended XXXX XXXX University from the Fall of XXXX until XX/XX/XXXX. I was there for 5 semesters & graduated XXXX XXXX, XXXX. I am a former XXXX. I never had any student loans. The VA paid for my 5 semesters. But even if I had loans, it cost less than {$4000.00} per semester. {$4000.00} 5 = $ {$20000.00}. Th student loan people claim I owe them almost {$100000.00}. AND they claim I have loans thru XXXX & XXXX. I GRADUATED IN XXXX!!! They also claim I have loans at multiple universities in different cities!! I have been trying for years to get them to resolve this & all they say is, " it's your loans. We verified it '' That's complete nonsense. If this cant be resolved & these loans removed from my name & credit report, I will have to notify the FBI, my attorney and file an identity theft & fraud lawsuit. Please help me

Consumer Complaint: This particular account situation that is lately filing on my own credit document has a seriously unfavorable relation to my personal ability to obtain a present loan application. I highly recommend you generate verification that Credit Union has been reported completely in accordance with the Fair Credit Reporting Act regulations, it's really a serious problem to misreport. More confirmation of the aforesaid item too. My proper request must over, I was never 30 days/60 days/120 days late in any of my payments and I'm not greatly tuned in to the date opened so I prefer to ask you be investigated as soon as possible and confirmed to be correct. Thanks!

Consumer Complaint: My student loans were all consolidated and transferred to the United States Department of Education. All student loans are current and in good standing. However, NELNET is reporting numerous accounts in my name as 120 days late. I have contacted NELNET numerous times in an attempt to have them correct and remove these items from my report, all to no avail. Furthermore, I have disputed these items on the credit reports associated with each of the three major bureaus ( XXXX, XXXX, and XXXX ), and they refuse to delete the item because NELNET responds to the dispute by stating that the loans are verified and accurate.

Consumer Complaint: Paid my XXXX loan off after 4 years of payments. Took every last penny in my account. Thought I was done with these XXXX. Then the following month Great Lakes withdrew my monthly autopay amount of {$590.00} out of my account. I called and the extremely condescending representative informed me that, despite paying off the loan I still needed to turn off autopay. Ridiculous! What other loan servicer requires that? To make it more absurd, you cant turn off autopay online once you are done making payments. Great Lakes informed me that they couldnt refund my payment for 45 DAYS! It took every spare penny to finally reach my goal of being debt free, how can I pay my rent this month? I bet that the majority of people use autopay and many of them dont realize they need to cancel after paying off the loan. If Great Lakes is holding on to an extra payment for all those people for 45 days they are earning some serious interest. Its criminal and sad. I guess they have the federal government feeding them customers so what do they care if young people trying to repay student loans get XXXX?

Consumer Complaint: One parent plus loan was opened in XX/XX/XXXX for one of my children at the start of collegiate studies. This loan was to have been paid by my former spouse at the closing of the home we owned jointly. However, that apparently did not occur and some years later I was contacted by the US Dept of Education and told it was still open and now attached to me. I made payment arrangements, despite it being a hardship. I was later granted total and permanent XXXX by Social Security XX/XX/XXXX and, at that time, XXXX NJ began monitoring my ability to obtain and/or maintain gainful employment. After the three-year monitoring period it was found I was not. The loan was in forbearance during the monitoring period. I was subsequently offered, and granted, loan forgiveness by the US Dept of Ed due to total and permanent XXXX in XX/XX/XXXX. At that time, I was informed the loan would be transferred to NelNet for monitoring. Since I was already at full retirement age, and deemed totally XXXX, I do not know why this monitoring was undertaken at all. However, I cooperated fully with followup notification from Nelnet ; the only followup received being the following year, XX/XX/XXXX, when I received a post-discharge monitoring form, which I completed and returned with the requested information. I heard nothing further from Nelnet. However, the following year I began to receive notice of delinquent payments through credit monitoring. It took a great deal of time and effort to finally reach someone at Nelnet. When I did, the woman with whom I spoke ( in XX/XX/XXXX ) said the delinquent reporting was in error and would be corrected. I again heard nothing further from Nelnet, but in XX/XX/XXXX the account began to again be reported as delinquent via credit reporting. It must be noted that this one account is completely misrepresented as five accounts, reflecting closing dates of XX/XX/XXXX for US Dept of Ed and Nelnet respectively, and XX/XX/XXXX for US Dept of Ed and Nelnet respectively. The fifth entry shows it being open, with the highest balance the same as the closing amounts of the four other entries, as it is of course the very same one loan, but with a significant amount now added. Although Nelnet has never contacted me since XX/XX/XXXX, I sent income documentation to them following my phone contact with their associate last year ( who said this would no longer be an issue ) and now again this year because they are reporting a long-closed account as open and harming my credit to an extreme degree. Although Nelnet indicates receipt of my very detailed letter and documentation, it is now well beyond the 15-day period they indicate they have to respond. The expiration date for this to be completely resolved is listed on the post-discharge monitoring form as XX/XX/XXXX. We are now more than four months past that date, they have all the information they could possibly require, and this grossly misreported loan as being delinquent must be dealt with and resolved immediately, with full restoration of my credit rating and official notification to me that the manner is fully resolved.
