Issue: Dealing with your lender or servicer
Subissue: Trouble with how payments are being handled
Consumer Complaint: Hello, I have been trying to reach Nelnet forever to contact them that I want to be placed on the XXXX plan and not defaulting to the XXXX plan as they have been doing to everyone else. For the majority of us with grad school loans, we are navigating buying a house, raising kids, and finally earning some income to get us out of debt. The high interest payments are simply not making things economical to survive, adding along the XXXX % inflation that has accounted in our fuel, food and basic living expenses that the PCE continues to leave off. Please help us navigate and request further delays because Nelnet is not equipped to handle processing these loans properly and is misleading people into the worst options for themselves. You can find on reddit multiple threads about people complaining of Nelnet 's embarrassing practices and working towards delaying and preventing any form of help : XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX Please send some authorities to ensure that Nelnet is operating within the consumers XXXX rights because it is apparent they are not. Signed another distressed citizen, XXXX

Consumer Complaint: I applied for the XXXX student loan repayment plan through studentaid.gov on XX/XX/XXXX, for my federal loans serviced by Nelnet. The XXXXXXXX website says my application was " processed '' on XX/XX/XXXX, and said my servicer completed a review of my application on XXXX. I received an e-mail on XXXX from Nelnet saying they were reviewing my application and that if they had not completed this process in 10 days I would receive another e-mail. Their website states they are still reviewing my application, and I have received no further e-mails or updates from them. I was issued a billing statement for the month of XXXX on XX/XX/XXXX for an amount that did not reflect the amount I was quoted by studentaid.gov for the XXXX plan, due on XXXX. I submitted the full amount of this payment on the date it was due because I did not want my account to be delinquent. In looking for help resolving this issue, I read the following statement on XXXX : " If you applied for the XXXX XXXX close to your bill date or before your required payment due date, your servicer will place you in a forbearance status for the upcoming billing cycle while they process your application so that you do not pay more than you need to. Your servicer will also place you in forbearance if they can not process your application before these dates. '' This clearly did not occur, and Nelnet is showing a bill due in XXXX for the same amount ( which is about twice what I should be paying with XXXX ). If Nelnet could not process my application in time, they should not have charged me at all, according to the government website. They also stated they would provide further communication through the review process if it took longer than anticipated, and they have not. I am also attempting to resolve this with Nelnet, but the wait to speak to a phone representative is often several hours long, which is also unacceptable.

Consumer Complaint: The restarting of student loan payments has been a COLOSSAL DISASTER, and the fault lies on the XXXX, for not funding these servicers, and the incompetent servicers themselves. Im accruing about {$30.00} a day in interest and they are not processing my SAVE plan application, which would pause the interest, nor telling me when it will even happen. This is completely unacceptable. They have a massive conflict of interest because the more loans they service, and the longer, the more they get paid. I have Nelnet. Please help

Consumer Complaint: Back on XX/XX/2023, I applied for the government 's new income-based repayment plan, XXXX, and was almost immediately approved. Under the new XXXX XXXX, I would have a new, lower monthly repayment obligation. Nelnet still does not have updated information and is showing a much larger monthly repayment amount that does not reflect the approved XXXX XXXX estimate. It's been almost exactly a month. It's impossible to get a hold of anyone in their customer service department, and I need to start paying back this month!

Consumer Complaint: Nelnet has been an absolute XXXX of information. - I wasn't able to get a clear answer on a serious concern before having to finish my XXXX XXXX consolidation paperwork - you can not get a phone agent on the line AT ALL. Everytime I call them I'm on hold for more than XXXX minutes, up to an hour and a half. As of today, I was on hold for XXXX minutes on XX/XX/XXXX. I was told my XXXX XXXX consolidation ( in order to enter the XXXX XXXX ) would be processed by XX/XX/XXXX. There is no information on the status of my application. I only have until XX/XX/XXXX to submit my standard XXXX form if the XXXX request hasn't been approved. The Student Aid.Gov site just has it stalled " In review ''. NELNET WON'T ANSWER THEIR PHONE. I don't know how many XXXX months of Nelnet never answering their phone it will take before the government investigates and cancels their contract. They are completely derelict in providing any shred of customer service at this point.

Consumer Complaint: Attempted multiple calls to NELNET and unable to get anybody on the line. Their website states I must call to receive login information, and I can't pay without logging in. I am sending a letter today requesting administrative forbearance due to incorrect payment calculation ( ~ $ XXXX ) when the fed loan calculator states my payment should be $ XXXX based on my tax returns. NELNET is grossly mismanaging accounts.

Consumer Complaint: I tried to make a payment to my Federal Student loan through my loan service Nelnet. I tried to make payments on three different occasions : XX/XX/, XX/XX/, and XX/XX/. All three times my payment was returned becasue, according to Nelnet, the " payment could not be processed by your financial institution. '' I called my banks ( I used two separate accounts at two separate institutions to try to make the payments ) and neither one of them had received a request for payment from Nelnet. I tried to call Nelnet to handle the situation on XX/XX/XXXX and XX/XX/XXXX. I was not able to reach a customer service representative after 3 hours of hold time. I also emailed them on XX/XX/XXXX and received an automated message stating that Nelnet was not able to answer my email. I am concerned this will lead to late fees. Hoping the CFPB can help resolve the issue.
