Issue: Repossession
Subissue: Account reinstatement or redemption after repossession
Consumer Complaint: My father was a Navy Federal Credit Union member. He had an auto-loan, however he passed away in XX/XX/XXXX. I continued to make payments, once all was settled, I contacted the credit union to advise of my fathers passing. It took them months to determine they would talk to me. I provided death cert, heir-ship documents and all my contact info. I was finally assigned a case specialist in XXXX XXXX in XX/XX/XXXX. To date still have not heard from that person. I continued to call explaining story over and over. On XX/XX/XXXXXXXX the car was repossessed. When i called to find out why as it was not delinquent, I was told in the state of TX a lien can not remain in deceased persons name for more than 12 months. I explained I have been trying to work with them for sure a solid 6 months to resolve and have gotten no where! They finally assigned me to someone in the settlements department which has been an additional nightmare. The remaining loan balance was {$9700.00}. I was told to submit an offer which I did, {$7800.00}. Took another month for them to accept. I was told if I open an account that would likely make the process easier when trying to get approved for the loan so I did however my loan was declined so I went with plan B and was going to use credit card to pay-off. When I called to make the payment, I was told they don't accept credit card payments. I explained its not a Navy Federal card and no one ever explained what payments are or are not acceptable nor have I ever received anything in writing about this process, i was told its their policy. So now I am back to square one. The case manager that I was working with said she requested extension to give me more time to payoff lien of {$7800.00}. I countered again to {$7000.00}. She advised extension was approved through XX/XX/XXXX. I withdrew from my XXXX to pay lien. I called today to find out if counter off was accepted and I was told the car is up for auction. I requested information to speak with the agent that was helping me and requested to escalate to management and was told it's almost XXXX so all departments are gone. The process alone is frustrating but to be going through this in the midst of losing of a loved one is absolutely horrible!

Issue: Getting a loan or lease
Subissue: Confusing or misleading advertising or marketing
Consumer Complaint: On XX/XX/XXXX, I applied for a car loan at Navy Federal Credit Union. I'm an XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX and have been a member of the credit union since XXXX. I decided to apply for a used car loan based on the advertised rate for a 72-month loan which was 6.09 %. Navy Federal approved my loan with an interest rate considerably higher than the advertised rate. The rate that I was approved for was 8.09 %. Please note that the car I'm purchasing is a XXXX XXXX XXXX, with XXXX miles. The dealer invoice for the car, including taxes and fees totaled {$32000.00}, with my total downpayment of {$10000.00}, leaving a loan amount of {$22000.00}. In sum, I was surprised that Navy 's rate was much higher than the rate I received from a smaller credit union located within the DC market. According to a letter that I received from Navy Federal on XX/XX/XXXX, my XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX is XXXX ; I have no delinquent or derogatory credit.

Issue: Applying for a mortgage or refinancing an existing mortgage
Subissue: Application denials
Consumer Complaint: After a recent article came out with XXXX investigating NFCU about its denial of more than 50 % of its XXXX loan applicants and approving 75 % of its XXXX loan applicants. I beleive that all of my loan applications since 2020 have been denied based solely on my race ( XXXX ) and not based on my credit score and level of income. In fact most of the applications will not even let you complete it after using demographic information such as a social security number. A social security number contains all demographic information needed for a the application.

Subissue: Application denials
Consumer Complaint: I applied for a mortgage loan through Navy Federal Credit Union the earlier part of this year and was denied. I had just paid off several of my debit and my credit scores were high. I did not pursue more information on the denial I've also been a member with NFCU for well over 6 years. I've had a personal and a car loan through them which I've never missed a payment. I have no clue why I was denied I had quite a bit in savings which they saw.

Subissue: Can't close your account
Consumer Complaint: My accounts were being accessed by someone other then myself and i wanted to close accounts over the phone, they said i could not until i spoke with there security team who could not resolve the issues from the beginning. I have a terminal medical condition and try to avoid going physically areas with due to that fact that i am susceptible to becoming seriously ill. i do not wish to talk to there security team to simply close accounts and made multiple phone calls but it only ended in them taking in circles keeping me from closing my accounts and causing more stress then need be. There is not a significant amount of money in the accounts to begin with. Their systems put my personal information out to the world so i do not wish to bank with them anymore and just have my accounts closed that have been compromised.

Issue: Applying for a mortgage or refinancing an existing mortgage
Subissue: Negative impact of inaccurate appraisal
Consumer Complaint: In 2013, my wife and I, both with stable jobs, no debt, and substantial liquid assets, applied for a mortgage loan with Navy Federal Credit Union. Despite our strong financial standing, we were only approved for {$250000.00}, significantly less than our request of around {$400000.00}. This outcome was disheartening and shook our confidence as hardworking individuals. Our incomes were sufficient to afford a {$5000.00} monthly mortgage payment, which was evident from our pay stubs submitted to the bank. Frustrated, we began searching for homes in less desired neighborhoods, yet struggled to find suitable options within our approved loan amount. Many properties we encountered required extensive and costly repairs. Eventually, we stumbled upon a new development with homes priced around {$400000.00}. With some reluctance, we spoke to the property manager and learned that a {$5000.00} deposit was needed to reserve a lot for construction. I promptly paid the deposit and we applied for a loan for the house. To our surprise, we were approved for a loan exceeding {$400000.00}. We moved into this house and have been living there since. Interestingly, about nine months later, we refinanced our mortgage through Navy Federal Credit Union and were approved without issue.
