Issue: Closing your account

Subissue: Company closed your account

Consumer Complaint: I held a credit card account with Discover since XXXX. I had not used the account for more than a year -- the last time it carried a balance was XX/XX/XXXX -- but I was given no indication anything was wrong, and had even received a new card to activate, replacing my old one. I activated the card online on XX/XX/XXXX with no apparent issue, but when I went to use it the next day for a point of sale purchase, it was declined. After calling Discover on XX/XX/XXXX with my issue, they informed me the account had been closed without any notice to me. I received no communication -- not by telephone, U.S. Mail or secure message via their website -- to let me know this was the case or to give me a chance to take action and keep the account active. Discover said their policy was to open a new account for me, again, not a problem. But they said they could only offer me a credit limit of {$3500.00} on the account, a decrease of {$11000.00} from my previous limit of {$14000.00}. Their reasoning for doing so was my credit score being lower than it was previously, but the drop in score was a result of their unilateral actions stripping me of a nine-year old account and more than {$10000.00} of available credit. Any time in the past when they increased my credit limit or made any other changes to the terms of the account, I received a letter in the mail and, usually, confirmation online, as well. Even if they had kept my old account open but simply opted to lower my available credit, which would be well within their rights, isn't some form of notification required? I never missed a payment on the credit card and also paid off an {$8000.00} personal loan with their bank over a four-year term. After all that, Discover pulled the rug out from under me and put me in a tenuous position using more of my available credit than I'm comfortable doing, further adversely impacting my credit score. I'm very disappointed in their actions, and want to find out what recourse is available. Thank you.

Issue: Fees or interest

Subissue: Problem with fees

Consumer Complaint: On Friday, XX/XX/XXXX, I logged into Discover Cards site and attempted to send a message to customer support regarding payment options after my layoff during the COVID-19 crisis. Accessing the Secure Inbox, I attempted to follow the prompts and select options to access relief but received the following message. Hold that thought! Sorry, we're unable to receive messages at the moment. Please try again later. You can also reach us via Chat or call XXXX for immediate assistance. Not wanting to sit on hold, I tried to find the chat function to no avail. I checked the mobile app but also could not find anything. At XXXX Central Time on Saturday, XX/XX/XXXX, I received an email from Discover that Important Changes to your Discover Card Account Terms Now Available. I attempted to load the link, but the URL would not load in three web browsers. Finally, I tried a fourth, which loaded a login page. After logging in, it instantly logged out. I tried the mobile app, which had a notice with a timestamp of XXXX XXXX. Sadly, selecting the notice resulted in the error that it could not load in app and to login to the website to see the notice. Finally, I called XXXX after XXXX on Saturday, XX/XX/XXXX. The customer service representative informed me that no new notice was issued, and that the last one was from XXXX of 2019. Because of the email and the in-app notice, I kept pressing, and ultimately, she said there was a notice increasing fees and penalties for missing payments. Due to the denial and reversal, I did not trust anything else she stated. The timing of the fee increases coinciding with a declared national emergency is too perfect, especially when competing banks are openly announcing relief programs for customers. Some might call it predatory. Specifically, it is as though they detected my partial attempt to communicate with customer service and placed me in a group of increased late fees to profit from my difficulties. In addition, I still can not access the notice and confirm what was relayed on the phone.

Issue: Problem with a purchase shown on your statement

Subissue: Card was charged for something you did not purchase with the card

Consumer Complaint: A charge appeared on my account XX/XX/XXXX, the same day i lost my card. I didnt realize it was gone til later that evening. I disputed it and was issued a credit while they investigated. The end of XXXX i see the charge back on my account again. So i talked with someone and told them i wanted to challenge it. XX/XX/XXXX i check my balance and noticed the charge was added back on to my account again. Im upset at this point because its time for balance/payment info to go into the CBAs. This is the second month in a row my balance was reported high because of this charge. I checked the dispute area and found out that discover sided with the merchant because they provided a Grocery Receipt ... yes a RECEIPT!! Which doesnt prove anything, therefore it is not valid enough to base the final verdict for the claim. Ive pointed out several key factors to help the dispute. 1. The charge was made at a location Ive never shopped at before. 2. The charge was made outside of my city and 3. The charge was the highest amount ever spent off my card. Then The agent kept telling me to call in when i kept telling them i was sick and couldnt speak but no they kept being inconsiderate. Not only did they not investigate my issue, they sided with the merchant without proof. I even talked to someone on XXXX and was lied to, she never helped me at all! She said i could message her the dispute issue instead of calling. I Never had any issues with discover, always paid my bill ontime and yet i get treated like this. XXXX WOULD NEVER TREAT ME THIS WAY!! Discover needs to take a page from them. I use my discover card more than my XXXX even though i have a XXXX limit with XXXX. Im So im appalled.

Issue: Closing an account

Subissue: Company closed your account

Consumer Complaint: I opened a Discover online banking account with a bonus offer ( up to 200 USDs ). However, after I deposited XXXX USDs from my XXXX XXXX check, my account was suspended without telling my any concrete reason. Then I called Discover banking customer service twice to reactive my account. However, I was told that my account was closed ( instead of suspended! ) and they could not tell me the reason. What is worse, I tried to open the online banking account again. However, I found that I could not use any bonus offer code this time because the system indicated that I opened a similar account before ( though this account has been closed by Discover ).

Issue: Problem when making payments

Subissue: Problem during payment process

Consumer Complaint: I have complained to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau that because of the coronavirus I am not able to make payments at this time to Discover Card. Nevertheless Discover Card has been harassing me with now FOUR ( 4 ) demands for payment within a couple of weeks! The United States Secretary of the Treasury had advanced tax date from XX/XX/XXXX to XXXX XXXX and has forgiven all late fees and penalties. Furthermore all student debt late fees an and penalties and payments are suspended! But Discover Card is being un-American and unpatriotic in demanding payment from me that I can not because of the coronavirus make at this time. I SHALL NOT MAKE ANY PAYMENTS AT THIS TIME. Let Discover Card sue me a court of law! But Discover Card may not impose any late fees or penalties and must stop harassing me!

Subissue: Other problem

Consumer Complaint: I paid off my Discover Card balance and requested a credit increase. I was transferred to three different people all who said they would submit the request and I would have a response in 30 seconds. The first person said there would not be a hard hit on my credit report, but then said I needed to talk to another group. The second person said there would be a hard hit on my credit report. The second person continued but then they transferred me to a third person. The third person said there would be yet another hard hit on my credit report for the increase. At this point I told Discover staff I simply did not believe what they were saying. I did not get a credit increase and I was told there was now a hard hit on my credit report.

Issue: Incorrect information on your report

Subissue: Information belongs to someone else

Consumer Complaint: I am writing to complain about Discover Card and that company 's persistent attempt to report derogatory information to XXXX and XXXX. The account in question ends in XXXX. This account was opened in XX/XX/2014. The credit limit on the account was {$4000.00}. Immediately upon receipt of the Discover Card, the identity thieves ran {$3900.00} debt. On XX/XX/2014 an {$80.00} payment was made. There was never any other payment on the account. There were 3 other minor charges made on the Discover Card. There were no other charges or payments made thereafter. Discover Cards own records indicate that the account was opened in XX/XX/2014 and closed XX/XX/2014. The entire lifespan of the account was less than 60 days. It is patently obvious that the identity thieves used the account for a very brief time before it was discarded. This is indicative of an identity thief using the card for in a rapid fashion before discarding same lest they be caught. The identity thieves appear to have utilized this for their own personal gain. The end result was that my information was compromised thereby resulting in these derogatory remarks in the XXXX and XXXX report. Further, this address associated with this account is XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX California XXXX. This address does not belong to me. I have never had any relationship with the XXXX XXXX address. I am attaching my driver 's license demonstrating that my address is XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX, CA XXXX.

Issue: Incorrect information on your report

Subissue: Information belongs to someone else

Consumer Complaint: I am disputing Discover Card charge off reported by Discover Bank on my XXXX credit report. This relates to Discover Card with the account number XXXX ( opened in XX/XX/2015 ). My research has revealed that wheover applied for this account used XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX, CALIFORNIA XXXX address. I am attaching my driver 's license as well as utility bill. I reside at XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX, California. I have no association with the XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX address. Further, I never applied for the Discover card in dispute here. This account was opened in XX/XX/2015. The identity thieves ran up a significant debt and stopped making payments after using the card for 3 months. I never applied for this Discover card account. I have disputed this tradeline with XXXX and by extension Discover. Each time, Discover has taken the position that the account was verified as belonging to me. Discover and XXXX as inaccurately reporting my credit history.
