Issue: Closing your account
Subissue: Can't close your account
Consumer Complaint: Around XX/XX/2021, my Discover Card was being declined. I had just paid the balance in full. When I contacted them I was given very evasive answers and given a number to call the next morning. In the mean time I tried to gain access to my account online. It was denying me access. When I did call the number the next morning I encounters more avoiding of my questions, yet was able to uncover that Discover wanted to " just verify the information I had given them was correct. '' I asked what reason they had to think it wasn't, my account is paid on time in full. Then an email comes demanding I grant Discover access to my IRS filings and if I do not they will shut off my credit in 5 days. No warning no reason, just a {$19000.00} credit line gone.

Issue: Closing an account
Subissue: Funds not received from closed account
Consumer Complaint: XX/XX/2021 Discover Bank called me to alert me about suspicious activity on my checking account via mobile deposit. After confirming that I did not make an attempt to deposit the item for {$2300.00} the agent recommended closing the account & opening another. I explained that a deposit from TN department of labor was due to be deposited the next day for {$3600.00}. The agent ( XXXX ) then said that she could freeze the existing account & wait to close it until after the deposit. I agreed. I called to follow up yesterday as the deposit hit as expected. The agent I spoke to was unable to close the account due to items not fully posted. I was instructed to call back today. I called back today & not only am I not able to open a new account. The agent closed my existing account & will not return my money. The balance prior to the {$3600.00} deposit was {$130.00}. My total funds due to me are {$3700.00}. I expect this to be expedited immediately as this is work compensation & federal funding. I do not care to do business with them anymore, they can close whatever they want. I want my money immediately. They can not garnish my money & do not have a court order. Since I no longer have access to the account I can not see what is being done with my funds which are exactly that, my funds.

Issue: Problem with a purchase shown on your statement
Subissue: Card was charged for something you did not purchase with the card
Consumer Complaint: My Discover credit card was fraudulently used last XXXX. In fact, Discover sent me a text informing me of this problem and I clicked I did not authorize this charge. It was apparently for a hotel in XXXX, WA. I thought I was done with the matter when a replacement card was sent to me. However, two months later, Discover billed me for the charge. I clearly clicked I did not authorize the charge, nor was I in XXXX at the time. Discover claims a copy of my driving license was given. I suspect someone obtained a copy of my license, but because the DL center is closed at the moment I have not been able to verify this. Earlier in the year I also had to provide a copy of my DL for two jobs I've been at and I have asked the police to look into those two places too. I will be obtaining new driving license numbers when they are reopened after the pandemic. I have filed numerous police reports and shared them with Discover. But Discover claimed the police " closed '' the reports, possibly because the police have other priority events, especially in the XXXX area. I hope at some point the police can go look at video footage of the supposed hotel involved in the fraudulent charge.

Issue: Advertising and marketing, including promotional offers
Subissue: Didn't receive advertised or promotional terms
Consumer Complaint: On Monday XX/XX/XXXX I responded to a Discover Card advertisement for 0 % APR financing ( 14 months ) for a credit card and loan consolidation program, so that I could refinance my debt under those terms. I outlined the quantity of money that I would need to borrow and submitted my application. On Tuesday XX/XX/XXXX I received an email notifying me that I was approved for a credit card with a credit limit substantially below the amount requested for approval. Despite not being approved for the amount requested, a credit card was opened in my name for the lesser amount. On Thursday XX/XX/XXXX I called Discover customer services and spoke with ( 5 ) individuals across multiple departments regarding this issue seeking the following resolutions, a ) to have the erroneous credit card account closed and removed from records b ) to have the approval honored for the quantity requested or c ) to have the account flagged to avoid shut-down due to inactivity. I was informed by all representatives that there was no action I could take that would not result in me either having to use their credit card on a regular basis or hurt my credit score by shortening my average account length by canceling the card. Given that this personal loan and credit card was requested together as part of a promotional offer by myself for a specific purpose and amount, and was then approved for a lesser amount with an inability to fulfill that purpose, and that discover card has provided me with no alternative for redress, I am hopeful that the CFPB might help me in resolving this issue and additionally to help future consumers by providing guidance on steps which can be taken in situations where-in individuals apply for one thing and are provided with something else by a financial institution without resorting to harming ones own credit score.

Consumer Complaint: In response to Complaint ID XXXX Not really sure why XXXX XXXX keeps responding to my complaints. I've stated at the end of each and every one that a response is not necessary, as is useless. Part of the brazeness Discover has I suppose ... Please note in XXXX XXXX XXXX latest response, he specifically stated, and I quote, " We will not being providing phone call recordings as you have detailed in your correspondence to the CFPB. '' So ... I, the customer, requested a copy of the recordings of my own phone calls for proof of an agreement with Discover 's agents.. And he just blatantly denied that request ... Need I say more? That pretty much says it all right there ... I have already documented this into my files and it will be used as part of my supporting documentation for my lawsuit against Discover ... A very big part ... The biggest part. : ) XXXX XXXX and his colleagues should be aware that if a subpoena is ordered by the court for the audio recordings of the relevant conversations, and they fail to comply, they will be subject to civil or criminal penalties ...
