Issue: Managing an account

Subissue: Banking errors

Consumer Complaint: After filing a complaint ( COMPLAINT ID XXXX ), Citi deposited {$500.00}, short of {$200.00} bonus. I spoke with the manager today, XX/XX/XXXX at XXXX. She said the reason for the shortage is because the {$25000.00} deposit to open the account must be from other financial institution. I made her aware that all deposits were made from other banks. She said she was with a customer and that she will call me back after she reviews the file. She called back at XXXX. She said her hands are tied because I filed a complaint with CFPB. She said " they will contact you ''. I asked, " who are they? ". She said, " another department handling your case ''. I asked, " do they know about the shortage? '' She said, " no, this case is closed ''. She continued to argue that the part of the deposit came from Citi Bank funds. I explained that $ XXXX came from XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX on XX/XX/XXXX, another $ XXXX came from XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX the next day on XX/XX/XXXX ( these files I attached is from Citi Bank transaction record ), $ XXXX from XXXX XXXX another $ XXXX from XXXX XXXX a total of $ XXXX. Attached you will find the sources of these deposits. XXXX did not do thorough investigation. She doesn't even recognize her own bank 's transaction records.

Issue: Closing an account

Subissue: Company closed your account

Consumer Complaint: In XX/XX/2023, I received a letter from Citi, who I had been with for 40 years, that they were closing my checking account. I have never bounced a check and keep a substantial amount of money in my account. They can not give me an explanation why. In XX/XX/2023 Citi cancelled my credit card. I have paid it off in full each month and never missed a payment. I have never been overdrawn. I pay off my credit cards in full monthly. The source of my income is my equities at XXXX. The transfers always were sent from my XXXX account directly to the bank. I am perplexed as to why this is happening and very concerned. The most frustrating thing about it is that they cant give me any explanation. The banker at Citibank said that an outside firm, XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX at the XXXX XXXX XXXX analyzes the accounts and makes recommendations and once the bank is told, they shut down the account and they can not change it. But no explanation of the reason why!

Subissue: Problem with balance transfer

Consumer Complaint: I had a balance transfer # XXXX expiring on XX/XX/XXXX for {$3900.00}. Which would then go to 19.49 % on XX/XX/XXXX per their transfer agreement. So on XX/XX/XXXX I paid {$400000.00} to roll over to XX/XX/XXXX per their new offer. Somehow their system did not apply the payment to the XX/XX/XXXX balance at 19.49 % but reduced my other open balance transfer due XX/XX/XXXX which was {$4000.00} on XX/XX/XXXX to {$1200.00} which was at 0.99 % already! and instead of creating a new balance due for around {$4000.00} due XX/XX/XXXX it only shows for {$2200.00} at 0 %. I have called many times since around XXXX and talked to various customer service people that are clueless.I even went in person to a Citibank branch in XXXX XXXX and they got me on a special line to repeat it all again. That person at least credit me the 19 % charges for the month of XXXX of {$64.00} but nothing yet on the other months : XXXX $ {$44.00} ; XXXX {$68.00} and XXXX {$59.00}! Last time I called Citi XXXX weeks ago they said would be fixed in about a week! That would have been last week! I need all those amounts credited and my balance transfer to be due on XX/XX/XXXX for {$4000.00} at 0 % and the screwed up one due XX/XX/XXXX for about {$4000.00} at .99 % asap!

Issue: Managing an account

Subissue: Deposits and withdrawals

Consumer Complaint: I opened a Citibank credit card with my husband ( XXXX XXXX ) on XXXX. I was then offered a bonus of {$450.00} for depositing {$50000.00} in a Citibank Savings account ( and maintaining that minimum balance for 60 days ). I opened a savings account to take advantage of that offer. An email from Citibank confirmed that the account was opened on XXXX. This was an individual account in my Name ( XXXX XXXX ) as Citibank did not offer the option to open a joint account. I proceeded to link the Citibank savings account with my XXXX account ( which is joint with my husband, XXXX XXXX ). Micro deposits between the two accounts were successfully made by XXXX. On XXXX I transferred {$50000.00} from my joint XXXX account to my individual Citibank savings account. I logged into the Citibank account at least twice to confirm my transfer went through. On XXXX I was not able to log into the savings account. After many conversations with several Citibank representatives, I was told by XXXX that my account had been " marked for closure '' by Citibank 's fraud department. I was told that I would receive a letter explaining what happened in the next couple of weeks. XXXX confirmed that the only activities on the account were the microdeposits and the {$50000.00} deposit from XXXX. The letter ( dated XXXX ) stated that Citibank was terminating our banking relationship, yet did not state when my {$50000.00} would be returned. I called Citibank on XXXX and spoke with XXXX who again confirmed that my account held {$50000.00}. He stated that the problem was that the deposit was made using a " third party check ''. XXXX told me that my funds would be returned either to me or to the originating financial institution ( XXXX ) within 30-60 days. I waited well beyond that 60 day window but the funds were never returned. On XXXX I called Citibank and spoke with XXXX who told me that XXXX would need to file a claim with Citibank. Citibank also confirmed that they still had the {$50000.00} in a later phone call with XXXX. I then spoke to XXXX at XXXX ( XXXX ) who said that XXXX would recall the EFT and gave me a dedicated associate to handle the matter. XXXX also informed me that the EFT from XXXX to Citibank was actually not done in my name ( XXXX XXXX ), but instead done in my husband 's name, XXXX XXXX ( who was joint on the XXXX account ). On XXXX ( 30 days after the EFT recall ), XXXX from XXXX informed me that Citibank failed to respond and also failed to return the funds. At this point, my Citibank is still in possession of my {$50000.00}.

Issue: Closing on a mortgage

Subissue:

Consumer Complaint: I was to close on my Mortgage w Citibank on XX/XX/XXXX but Citi was unable to get my XXXX Tax Return from the IRS and so Closing continued to be delayed. I continued to send additional funds to the attorney for the seller to not lose the sale. I had to close on XX/XX/XXXX with an all cash sale using funds borrowed from my Margin Account., I was advised that I could refinance and began the process. I was asked to resubmit documents many times. I did so within hours of each request not hearing back and then a few weeks later another request was made. This went on from early May through the summer. By then, the appraisal expired and had to be repeated. I was assured that the refinance closing would take place on XX/XX/XXXX. Meanwhile the interest on my XXXX XXXX increased each month as the Federal Reserve raised rates. The day before the closing I was informed that an approval from the condominium board expired and closing could not occur. I had to repay for this approval application waiting 20 days for the mortgage processor to receive it. Why did the Bank not review the expiration date which occurred well before XX/XX/XXXX? It took another two months again w requests for same or updated documents.I was told in XXXX that I needed XXXX in my checking/savings acct for the loan to process at the agreed upon rate. I had to withdraw my XXXX savings account and place in my Citi savings account to make this happen. The constant delay, re-submissions, expired documents announced at the last minute, change of balance amt in my accounts cause not only a XX/XX/XXXX closing but a severe financial margin interest cost and additional fees.

Issue: Closing an account

Subissue: Funds not received from closed account

Consumer Complaint: Citi Bank ended up closing my account out of nowhere. It was a brand new account ( about 3 months old ), and me and my husband decided to put our IRS tax return in this account to get some money in it. That was the only money that went in this account ever. It went in and we got to access the funds for maybe a week. Then, I transferred some of the funds over to my XXXX account to put money on that, and also my husbands bank account in his name. After that, maybe a day or two later, I tried paying a bill and it wouldnt go through. I tried logging into my Citibank account, but it would not let me log in. I ended up checking my email and thats where I seen an email from them stating that the funds are on hold and theyve closed the account for suspicious activity. I dont know the exact amount that was in there at the time, but I can tell you it was roughly {$5000.00} or above still in there. When I called Citibank to get some answers, I explained what has happened, and they said that there is no information on the account, just that it was closed for the suspicious activity. I tried asking them what exactly did I do, why can I do, when will we receive our money, etc., and they said all the information that they have was it was closed. They said that the Citibank process for something like this is 30-60 days. They said before that we will receive a letter in the mail stating the reason, along with the funds in form of a check. I tried explaining to them that we need the money, my husbands XXXX XXXX, he has a XXXX XXXX he has to pay, we have mortgage, car and all the other bills. I tried explaining what I read online about different laws for government checks and how long they can hold it just to try to speed up the process, but they said the same thing. Just a closed account. I tried explaining that the money in question was a federal tax return, with both my husbands name and my name on it, even though I was transferring money into other accounts, if they look close, they will see that one account was in my name ( XXXX ), and one was in my husbands name ( XXXX XXXX ), and they would be able to see, that the federal tax return funds that are in question with both of our names on it were being transferred to both my husband and myself which both were on the tax return. So whats the suspicious activity-still no answer. I brought up that government issued checks, including federal tax returns, cant be held for more than 10 days from my understanding. I can see if it was being transferred to accounts of a different name, but since it was the same names on the return, to me, thats holding a government check. I called them a handful of times just to hear the same exact answer- it closed for suspicious activity. The only times I got a little extra information, was one call at the end of XX/XX/2023, they said the same thing, but added they mailed your letter. But it would have came by now, so that was a lie. Makes me wonder why they were lying on a recorded line ( supposed to be recorded ). But if that was the case, that was 3-4 weeks ago from the date of this complaint, and even regular mail carrying would have got it here by now. The other time I got a little extra info, was around XX/XX/XXXX XXXX I called and received the same answer- closed for suspicious activity, letter in the mail, blah blah. But this time when they said youll receive the funds in form of check, they said that it will be with the letter. That was pretty much my communication with Citibank. The one other time I called and was pleading to them, even telling them that if anything happens with my mortgage or other bills, like late fees and cancellations, that they can pay for everything ( to me, they should be help responsible just because even a grade schooler can investigate this matter and see that all the names on the accounts getting transferred to, match up with the funds, which happen to be government issued ), they gave me all the same answers of, being closed for suspicious activity, receive a letter in the mail, receive the funds in form of check in the mail, along with saying that they dont deal with closed accounts and cant have any information on why, that is their fraud department that handles that. I then ask them for phone numbers for the fraud department, but they said they dont have a direct line, and they can only be contacted by email. I then asked for their email. They said we dont have that contact information. Thats everything that I got from them. All the information that I received. Numerous times calling them, they would just hang up directly on me even though I had questions I still had to ask. So this bank is either scamming me trying to steal my government issued tax return, or they just are the worst bank that Ive ever seen or dealt with. But this is not right. Not when its our money. And names on the accounts would tell that there is nothing suspicious about it. They should have investigated it and seen that and then closed the account. I dont even have an account number anymore. Its like Ive never had an account there. Which scares me and makes me think that they purposely try to steal money. But thats everything, sorry its so long. The only documentation I have from them is two emails stating that they found suspicious activity on my account, and that they will close it within 60 days- which was a lie too, because my account was wiped clean from the start of all of this.

Issue: Problem with a purchase shown on your statement

Subissue: Overcharged for something you did purchase with the card

Consumer Complaint: I made a purchase with friends at an establishment called XXXX XXXX in XXXX XXXX, California. My friends and I purchased a table for the evening for {$2000.00} including everything, so I was told, which we split 4 ways. I, however put the purchase on my Citi AAdvantage credit card to get the points. I asked for a receipt and was told one would be brought to me. That never occurred and when we were told to leave at the end of the night, again I asked for a receipt and was refused. I made a single purchase. I did not open a tab of any sort and my card was given back to me immediately after the purchase without a receipt. The charge showed up as {$2000.00} as pending on my credit card. Then a few days later when the charge was processed, it processed for {$3000.00}. I attempted to call the company several times and always got the run around or that someone would be in contact. This never occurred. I then went on the file a dispute with my credit card company and have been denied twice because of the merchant. I have done research and read reviews and this merchant has been pulling this a lot with their clientele.

Issue: Problem with a purchase shown on your statement

Subissue: Credit card company isn't resolving a dispute about a purchase on your statement

Consumer Complaint: On XXXX I was scammed for a product that I never received. A charge of {$540.00} was billed to my Citi credit card. I kept a detailed report of everything that happened and all the receipts. After contacting Citi to file a dispute, I had conversations with the merchant, Citi Bank, and Citi representations between XXXX and XXXX. I also have evidence that I went back to the merchant to sort it out between us and the merchant lied on their dispute report saying I was happy with the product that I never received. Between now and then, Citi has given me conditional credit for the dispute and reversed the conditional credit twice. This is even despite the fact that I gave a very detailed report with proof that I did not even get the product. After a lengthy email that provided my report and proof was sent on XXXX I received a notice from Citi Bank on XXXX stating, " Our goal is to provide you with the highest standard of service. We are working with the merchant or merchant 's bank to obtain permanent credit for this charge. If the merchant or merchant 's bank will not accept this charge, we will notify you of the reason. We have re-issued a conditional credit to your account for this dispute. '' Unfortunately, on XXXX I received a letter from Citi Bank that backtracked their decision, placing the responsibility of the payment back on me for a product I never received. In their letter, Citi Bank shares with me that, " The merchant will not honor our request for credit based on the information you provided us. Every effort has been made to secure credit for your account. Since we are unable to obtain compensation from the merchant, your account has been rebilled. We now consider this investigation complete. '' I am now supposed to pay this hefty charge amount for a product that I never received since the merchant refuses to compensate Citi Bank. I believe this is unfair and unacceptable as my dispute was heavily supported in my favor according to the representatives I have spoken to.

Subissue: Attempted to collect wrong amount

Consumer Complaint: Account was open on XX/XX/XXXX in the amount of {$910.00} for collection. It is currently listed as both a closed and collection account. It also changes the original amount of the account every month ( which cant change since the account isnt open ). I have disputed several times because this account was settled in court on XX/XX/XXXX in favor of XXXX in the amount of {$770.00} and should no longer be on my credit report. They increase the balance of the collection every month, and report it twice. Resulting in significantly lowering my score which is a violation of the FCRA as it should not be on my report at all, but they continue to verify inaccurate information.
