Issue: Getting a credit card
Subissue: Card opened as result of identity theft or fraud
Consumer Complaint: On Wednesday, XX/XX/2023, I applied for a Capital One platinum credit card and was approved. The following day, Thursday, XX/XX/2023, I tried to set up an online account, but received a message stating that I already had an existing account. I have never had a Capital One account, so this raised a major red flag. I hit the forgot username password, and the Capital One system prompted me to type in a verification code that would be sent via text, but I noticed the number listed was not my number. Then, I received an email with a username that I did not recognize at all. So, I called Capital One and explained to the what happened and I have been a victim of fraud. Capital One informed me that they will closed the account that someone previously signed up for with my information. Capital One informed me that this person had a checking and savings account set up. I'm not sure if they have credit cards or other accounts with other institutions using my info. I am assuming they got my info last year, when my cell and bank account was hacked. If I had not applied for a credit card with Capital One, then I probably would have never known, until I received my credit history or credit report trying to make a big purchase like a vehicle or house.

Consumer Complaint: Hello and thank you On XX/XX/, I noticed a charge on my XXXX credit card ( Company is Capital One ) when viewing transactions online, that a charge, {$22.00}, was made XX/XX/ which was not my doing. I called the credit card company on XX/XX/XXXX, they documented the information I shared which was that this is not a charge I made nor a merchant know/have been. I told them I had the card in my possession so they then instructed me to shred as they were sending a new card. I received 2 letters dated XX/XX/XXXX from Capital One : 1st one : confirming they have mailed the new card and that they have put a temporary credit 2nd one : states that they found insufficient evidence of fraud because information discovered leads them to believe that I or another account user benefited from the transaction. I immediately called again to dispute this letter because I did not make the charge nor authorized anyone else to do such a thing. They were very rude and abrupt and literally called me a liar. I really didn't want to pay for it however do not want my credit to be affected. Please is there something you can advise. Thank you.

Consumer Complaint: XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX, XXXX XXXX XXXX NJ XXXX XX/XX/XXXX Capitol One Attn : Customer Service Department XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX, UT XXXX Subject : Request to Remove Charged-Off Debt from Credit Report due to Missing 1099 Dear Sir/Madam, I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing to bring to your attention a matter regarding my account with Capitol One. My name is XXXX XXXX, and my account number ending in XXXX which was associated with a charged-off debt. Firstly, I would like to express my gratitude for your efforts in assisting me throughout the process of resolving my financial situation. However, I believe there is a discrepancy in the reporting of this debt, which I would like to address. As of the tax year XXXX I have not received a Form 1099-C, " Cancellation of Debt, '' from Capitol One. According to the IRS guidelines, when a creditor forgives or cancels a debt of {$600.00} or more, they are required to send the debtor a Form 1099-C. This form reports the canceled amount as taxable income to the debtor. Without receiving this form, I am unable to fulfill my tax obligations accurately and may inadvertently underreport my income. Additionally, as the debt was charged off, I understand that the reporting of this debt on my credit report should be adjusted accordingly. A charged-off debt should typically be marked as " Charged-Off '' and indicate a {$0.00} balance. However, the debt is currently listed as outstanding on my credit report, which negatively impacts my credit score and financial standing. Therefore, I kindly request that you take the following actions : Provide me with a copy of the Form 1099-C for the canceled debt associated with my account account ending in XXXX for the tax year XXXX. Correct the information on my credit report regarding this charged-off debt, reflecting the appropriate status as " Charged-Off '' with a {$0.00} balance. I believe that addressing these issues will not only ensure accurate tax reporting but also help rectify any inaccuracies on my credit report, which is crucial for my financial stability. Please respond to this matter within 30 days from the date of this letter, as required by the Fair Credit Reporting Act ( FCRA ). If you require any additional information or documentation from me, please do not hesitate to contact me at my email XXXX. I appreciate your prompt attention to this matter and your understanding of the impact that these issues have on my financial well-being. I look forward to resolving this matter amicably and would like to thank you in advance for your cooperation. Sincerely, XXXX XXXX

Consumer Complaint: Kohls changed my store card into a " Capital One Visa '' without allowing me to opt in. I did not give my permission to open said Capital One Account and when I contacted Capital One to close the account and move the balance to an existing Capital One Account they refused to allow me to do it even though there was plenty of credit available on my account. I contacted Kohl 's customer service and asked them to revert my account back to a store account and the staff brushed me off and gave excuses that they " don't have any of my information anymore '' yet refused to help me beyond this excuse to resolve the situation. They informed me that I needed to return to a kohls store and " open a new account ''. Also, I was informed that I was " chosen '' for this " wonderful offer '' and they refused to understand that this is a different type of credit and that I DID NOT OPT IN OR AGREE to this account change. I contacted Capital One and canceled the new card and had to transfer my balance onto another credit card and now I have a negative item on my credit report for the closed Capital One account. I believe that this is a violation of the Fair Credit Reporting Act!
