I was never alerted of an account creation or transactions and was unaware of the account until I received a statement in the mail. I contacted the checks system and activated identity theft measures through my credit card company. I also contacted all three credit bureaus.

Issue: Opening an account
Subissue: Account opened as a result of fraud
Consumer Complaint: On XX/XX/XXXX, I received 4 emails from Bank of America where I already have a credit card. The emails were in regards to a new checking account application being submitted, my email address being changed, my phone number being changed, and my checking account application being under review. I did not do any of these things so I opened my BofA mobile app and started a chat. The chat representative gave me a phone number to call. I called the phone number and the person I spoke with said that she saw no issues with my account, no changes, and no new accounts opened. I saw the same in my mobile app. She said the emails were likely a phishing attempt and I should mark them as junk. She said she would notate my account. On XX/XX/XXXX, I received a phone call to my cell phone regarding my accounts at BofA. I was confused because I had been told already that there were no accounts opened or changes made. The woman who called said that they believe the new checking account I opened to be fraud. I explained that I had called on Thursday, XX/XX/XXXX and spoke to someone who said that no accounts were opened or changes made and she was going to notate my account. This CSR did not see any notes on my account and confirmed that there was an account opened in my name. I asked to see the application and asked what information the individual had of mine that they were able to open the account. The CSR said she could not provide me with any of that information, but I should assume that I am the victim of identity theft and follow appropriate procedures. That was all the information she provided. No resources, no attempts to assist, nothing. Since, I have found the steps on my own and followed them, but I find it concerning that BofA would not be obligated to provide me with the fraudulent application or at least provide me with the information that was used to open the account on my behalf. Since it was not, what information does the fraudster have? What information should I be protecting? What information is likely to appear at other financial institutions that I do not have a relationship with where accounts could be opened in my name? How can consumers prevent fraud or protect themselves if these quite large institutions are unable to or unwilling to assist? Shouldn't there be an obligation to provide consumers with the details of the fraud perpetrated against them? If billions of dollars each year are being lost to scams and fraud, wouldn't it be beneficial for FIs like BofA and others to provide even just the basics of information? Shouldn't they be required to have a team of individuals trained in how to handle these situations?
