Issue: Fees or interest

Subissue: Problem with fees

Consumer Complaint: I reported American Express to the CFPB when my account was closed by them to retrieve the annual fee. The fee was refunded in part, {$400.00}, as a result of that report. I should have been refunded in full as the card benefits were taken away and the contractural agreement was broken and invalidated unilaterally. Today, almost a year later, I received an email that I was being recharged {$200.00} ( {$200.00} plus {$4.00} in interest ) for a card benefit that was issued twelve months ago. When I contacted American Express to have this corrected I was told that they had reversed a card benefit for the return of a product ( over one year ago ) and there was nothing I could do to resolve it. This is completely unreasonable and unethical and a breach of contract. A move like this on their part creates chaos and instability in the consumer credit environment and must be reversed. If they did this to me, they are doing this to many previous card holders. They should be fined accordingly.

Issue: Getting a credit card

Subissue: Card opened as result of identity theft or fraud

Consumer Complaint: Greetings, Consumer Financial Protection Bureau the credit bureaus responsible for maintaining accurate credit information, has committed egregious violations of consumer law, which I am writing to report. It is crucial that these violations are dealt with promptly and appropriately. Prior to anything else, I would like to highlight the Bureaus problematic practice of removing prior dispute results from their records. Each Bureau has removed derogatory information from my credit report following the initial investigation into my dispute. However, they have repeatedly failed to retain these deletion records, resulting in the re-reporting of deleted accounts. In addition to undermining the integrity of the dispute procedure, this practice violates the Fair Credit Reporting Act ( FCRA ) by misrepresenting accurate credit information. I request that the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau assures XXXX is held accountable for this practice and mandates the retention of all dispute outcomes and deletion records. The following violations are included, but not limited to : Failure to comply with Section 809 ( b ) of 15 USC 1692g - Validation Request : This section grants me the right to request validation of the putative instruments of indebtedness. The credit bureaus have, however, neglected to provide me with the original loan documents bearing my signature, as required by Section 609 ( a ) ( 1 ) ( A ) of the FCRA. They have only responded " VERIFIED " in their response, without any actual evidence, which does not satisfy the legal requirement for verification. Inaccurate Reporting and Violation of FCRA Section 1681e of Title 15 In apparent violation of Section 1681e of Title 15 United States Code, the credit bureaus have reported inaccurate information on my credit file. This includes reporting fraudulent late payments, negative loan and credit card accounts, as well as unauthorized hard inquiries. Section 1692e of Title 15 of the United States Code prohibits these fraudulent and deceptive statements. Willful and Negligent Noncompliance with the FCRA and Consumer Law : Despite my prior dispute investigations resulting in the removal of derogatory information, the credit bureaus have continued to report inaccurate and unverified items on my credit report. This willful and negligent violation of the FCRA is a violation of Sections 616 and 617, which provide civil liability and remedies for affected consumers. Reporting Deleted Information : Violation of Section 405 ( a ) of Title 15 U.S. Code Once information has been purged due to fraud, it can not be reported again, per Section 405 ( a ) of Title 15 of the United States Code. However, credit reporting agencies continue to report deleted accounts In accordance with the Fair Credit Reporting Act American Express Account # XXXX, American Express Account # XXXX, American Express Account # XXXX has violated my rights. 15 U.S.C 1681 section 602 A. States I have the right to privacy. 15 U.S.C 1681 Section 604 A Section 2 : It also states a consumer reporting agency can not furnish a account without my written instructions

Subissue: Problem with customer service

Consumer Complaint: I made a payment on XX/XX/2023 using my bill pay account for the amount of XXXX to my American Express credit card. Upon receipt of the payment Amex cs told me that the available credit should update withing 24-36 hours. When that time passed I contacted Amex cs again and they told me 72 hours this time. So I waited for the 72 hour period and contacted them again regarding my available credit. I was told this time that the available credit was put on hold indefinitely. So I got mad and cancelled the account and requested that the minimum payment be held and the rest of the XXXX payment be returned to me. That is when the mess started. While making my payment using the bill pay, the system gave me an error. So I sent the payment twice without realizing as each time I processed the payment it gave me an error. I decided to leave the system alone and wait for a day or two to check on the status. So the next day I saw that instead of one payment three payments went out. So I moved my money from the account so only one payment could pay. The other two bounced. So one was duplicate on XX/XX/2023 and the other one was sent on XX/XX/2023. I have asked the customer service weather I could request my payment back as American Express only requires that a minimum payment be satisfied, I was informed that yes. So Ever since XX/XX/2023 I have been requesting my payment back and I would get a denial as the the team ( backend ) as they call it would state that I did not have credit balance on the account. I have been struggling for months to explain to these foreign agents from XXXX and XXXX that I had only requested that my payment be returned to me but they kept sending me messages and letters that my two payment were returned therefore there was no credit balance on the account.

Consumer Complaint: American Express I called to cancel a credit card and was told to switch to a non-fee card. I switched to the no fee card and in the process, auto pay was turned off. I received a statement and thought auto pay was still enabled and then subsequently was charged a {$29.00} late fee. I paid the statement balance immediately and requested a waiver of the late fee.

Subissue: Debt was paid

Consumer Complaint: I paid the amount in full on XX/XX/XXXX as it was scheduled by American Express, I was told by American express on XX/XX/XXXX verbally on the phone ( recorded line ) that my account would not go into collection yet as I still have the opportunity to pay in full as the reason for my delay I was waiting for my cash out refinance to go through, I explained that I would need a couple weeks for the refinance to be completed. Once it was completed, I paid the amount that they told me to pay after they were to remove a late fee. But instead they have sent my account to collection and now my credit has taken an unnecessary hit. I would like it removed. I am still resolving the issue of an additional interest payment added to my account due to the late fee that was promised to be waived never got waived as of XX/XX/23. Please see attached bank statement showing the amount paid.

Consumer Complaint: On XX/XX/2023 I used my American Express Credit Card to hire a BRAND new law-firm in Arkansas who had been recommended to me by a friend-of-a-friend to help me in my child custody case. I had never met this lawyer in person, but I was in a bit of an emergency situation because I had just been hit with a surprise child-custody case that had been filed against me by my ex-husband, and I was trying to stop the emergency hearing from happening without me because I was living out-of-state. When the law firm who agreed to help me last minute tried to run my credit card, it flagged with American Express as fraud. That surprised me, but since it was an emergency situation, I overrode the charges ( and my instincts ) and let them charge it anyway for {$3500.00}. After that, things didn't get better, and last month, my American Express card mysteriously lowered my credit limit without warning me and without explaining why. Also, my law firm XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX in XXXX, AR ) has been very unprofessional in a number of various ways, and very difficult to get in touch with. She ( XXXX XXXX ) keeps neglecting to give me important information, she wanted me to get a psychological evaluation for {$5500.00} ( I didn't! ) she let me waste an airline flight to Arkansas by not giving me vital info sooner, and I am concerned that in not knowing her/them, being recommended to them by someone I may or may not trust, and having their credit charge flag as fraud, are all huge red flags! Then, with my credit company suddenly lowering my credit limit... none of it adds up or makes sense! Please help me. Thank you!

Issue: Problem with a purchase shown on your statement

Subissue: Credit card company isn't resolving a dispute about a purchase on your statement

Consumer Complaint: Subject : Complaint and Claim Against American Express for Identity Theft and Fraudulent Accounts To Whom It May Concern, My name is XXXX. I am writing to submit a formal complaint and claim against American Express regarding a case of identity theft and fraudulent accounts opened under my name. The unauthorized use of my personal information has caused significant financial and emotional distress, and I am seeking your assistance in resolving this matter. Identity theft occurred between XXXX and XX/XX/2022, during a period when I was outside the United States for visa renewal purposes. While I was in XXXX renewing my student visa, someone maliciously exploited my personal details, including my name, date of birth, and Social Security Number, to fraudulently apply for credit cards and apartments. Despite these criminal activities being carried out using their own address and contact information, I was completely unaware of these transactions until the damage had been done. The specific fraudulent American Express credit cards that were opened under my name are as follows : XXXX. XXXX XXXXXXXX XXXX XXXX card with approximately {$6000.00} in expenses. XXXXXXXX XXXX XXXXXXXX XXXX with approximately {$2000.00} in expenses. Upon discovering the unauthorized use of my identity on XX/XX/2022, I promptly took action to mitigate the situation. I contacted various credit card companies and apartment complexes to report the identity theft and initiated a police report through https : //www.identitytheft.gov. To address the immediate concerns raised by the fraudulent activities, I contacted American Express on XX/XX/2022, seeking guidance and resolution. Regrettably, the response I received from American Express was far from satisfactory. Instead of taking responsibility for the fraudulent accounts, I was advised to pay the minimum payments to protect my credit score while an investigation was conducted. Believing that this would help safeguard my financial standing, I followed their guidance and made payments on the aforementioned fraudulent accounts. Despite my cooperation and adherence to their instructions, I have encountered further difficulties in rectifying the situation. While American Express did address the derogatory information related to the Amex Blue Cash Everyday card following the submission of evidence and a police report, they have unjustly refused to acknowledge the fraudulent nature of the Amex Platinum Card. This refusal is in direct contradiction to the advice I received from an American Express representative who explicitly stated that I could pay the outstanding balance to mitigate the impact on my XXXXredit score.
