Issue: Written notification about debt
Subissue: Didn't receive enough information to verify debt
Consumer Complaint: I know that the cfpb is well aware of portfolio continued illegal debt collection practices and consumer reporting violations. Well they are still at it. I pulled a copy of my credit report because I am planning to purchase a home and notice Portfolio reporting multiple times with different account numbers on my credit report I wrote to them and this is what I requested " I requested verification/validation of the alleged debt and specifically request a copy of a contract or agreement signed by the alleged original creditor and all parties to any such contract provided. Note : a billing statement, notice, or any unsigned document is not verification of the alleged debt '' All they sent me was the same documents I asked them not to send me, billing statements that anyone can create themselves, the billing statements of the companies they sent I do not recognize none of the documents they sent have my signature and the letter they sent with the fake billing statements said that they should not be collecting on the debt because it pass the statue of limitations. Yet when I pull a recent copy of my credit report I still see them there. Having the debt report on my credit report is a form of collection.

Consumer Complaint: i have a collection account on my credit report from portfolio recovery which is the company that purchased the fraudulent account from a company by the name of XXXX XXXX in the amount of {$1000.00}. I have tried to dispute this account on the XXXX website as well as by mail. I believe i mailed the validation letter in XX/XX/2023. I was sent a credit card statement as supposed proof that i owned the fraudulent account. There are currently remarks on my credit report stating that portfolio recovery did a FCRA investigation and that the customer does not agree. I do not agree to paying these fraudulent charges.

Consumer Complaint: They have called me five times over the past month. At first I ignored the calls not knowing what it was about, and they never left a voicemail. At the third try, I answered to be asked where XXXX was. I told them they had the wrong number and they said they would put it through their system. Fast forward to today, I received another call and they asked for XXXX again. After asking them to confirm the number they had just called, they told me a number that was three digits off from my personal. I told them that I had already spoken with someone from the company regarding this exact thing and that I would be reporting to the FTC due to my privacy being breached again.

Consumer Complaint: Duplicating the same debt on my credit reports twice is illegal the original creditor sold the debt on ( XX/XX/2017 ) it was charged off and closed but yet they are still reporting the debt as well as the collection agency that they sold it to, the amount that is being reported is {$970.00}. I don't owe the collection agency because I have not signed any contractual contract binding me to pay this debt off with the collection agency. And sending me a Bill statement isn't justification of a contract.

Consumer Complaint: I received a Summons to court for XX/XX/XXXX with attached billing type of documentation that had only my first and last name on it, with no reference to a billing address, and only referenced the last XXXX digits of an account number. I have not had any communication that I know of from this debt collector. I do not recognize this debt or having a credit account with the referenced creditor. I do not have any record of payments being made by me to this creditor, though the statements say payments were being made apparently at some point. Also the provided statements show a card security fee being charged, which upon inquiry I was told it was something that was a type of service that would have paid the owed balance in full upon default, and that if this was legitimate, it should have not been sold to the debt buyer, Portfolio Recovery, in the first place. The statement provided is dated for XX/XX/XXXX. I was advised by a lawyer that this debt is most likely identity theft, since the security service was purchased, as the claim amount is relatively low at {$2600.00}, and am retaining a lawyer for all communications, including with the company, and had been advised to not acknowledge the summons, as it could be construed as an admission to validity of the debt. This research has taken longer than expected, therefore the date of this complaint that I have been advised to submit personally after the fact.
