Issue: Dealing with your lender or servicer
Subissue: Trouble with how payments are being handled
Consumer Complaint: On XX/XX/2018 I logged into Navient to check my account and it said I would have an automatic payment of {$270.00} on XX/XX/2018. I made an extra payment of {$210.00} directed at 1 single student loan on XX/XX/2018. On XX/XX/2018 I logged on to Navient 's website and saw my auto pay had been changed to {$39.00} for all 6 of my loans, but I had not been notified as to why it had been changed. This had happened before on XX/XX/2018 and XX/XX/2018, but for different amounts ( from {$380.00} to {$270.00} ). I am unsure why my my monthly auto payment has dropped by 90 % in the past 3 months, but my loans have not dropped by 90 %. I still have over {$21000.00} in loans and I am not in an income based repayment plan, so I should owe more than {$39.00}. It seems that Navient may be recalculating my payments in order to keep me paying them longer. I do not want my loans to be messed up because I am a XXXX and could be eligible for loan forgiveness. I am not eligible if I miss payments, even if it is the fault of the servicer.

Issue: Struggling to repay your loan
Subissue: Problem lowering your monthly payments
Consumer Complaint: My student loan was bought by Navient along with the majority of student loans sometime in XX/XX/2013 I believe. I was contacted by them to start making payments. I couldnt afford it at the time having a job that barely paid my bills as is. They requested I go for Student Loan Forgiveness. Which I did and made several payments following which is what they requested. I didnt hear from them for 2 more years. One day I decided to look into it and as it turns out they had been sending me letters and emailing me about having to make payments. However, they had the incorrect address of where I lived ( house number was off by 2 digits, very strange almost like they changed it so I wouldnt see it ). My email address they had on file was also incorrect. Low and behold, my loans had defaulted and gained copious amounts of interest. After dealing with 20 minutes of machines I finally reached a representative. They had no idea why that happened and they requested I take a break from payments with financial hardship. I signed up for that not knowing that my loan would continue to accrue interest and raise it even higher. I did this twice before I realized that was happening. I called and expressed my concern and they explained to me how to enroll in the Income Driven Repayment plan. After a week of dealing with mailing my information, talking to reps, and figuring everything out, I was finally able to apply. I made modest payments for awhile and then was notified I would have to reapply every year I wanted to do that program. They made it EXTREMELY difficult to reapply and gave poor customer service as to how I could continue to use the program. The representatives were rude and I was transferred several times to figure out what I needed to do. After 2 weeks I finally just sent them the information they requested and am waiting on acceptance. The normal payments are half of what my rent costs every month and I dont understand how anyone in my situation is expected to pay that much every month. So now Im paying through income driven repayment and it barely covers my interest rate. Im dissatisfied with the customer service and overall handling of my loans with this company. I wish I was with someone else that could actually help me get my loans under control. Although, thats not likely to improve with anyone else. In a nutshell, my only option is this : You cant afford the outrageous payment every month? Ok we will cut it in half but youll be paying your loans quadruple what you pulled out in the first place something needs to be done about the student loan problem millions of Americans my age in this country face.

Consumer Complaint: On the day of XX/XX/XXXX, I mailed off a letter to Navient/Department of education. in that letter was a statement saying that the company agreed to delete/waive a late notice that was marked on my credit report XX/XX/XXXX when they decided to cash a check I also included in the envelope. The check included was in the amount of {$190.00} for the payment of that month. Navient converted the check to a digital check and cashed it, but the late notice was not removed from my credit report.

Subissue: Received bad information about your loan
Consumer Complaint: In 2009 I graduated with my XXXX XXXX in XXXX XXXX putting me at around {$42000.00} in student loan debt. I contacted my student loan servicer, Navient then Sallie Mae, via telephone regarding loan repayment plan and loan forgiveness as I qualify based on my employment. I asked specifically what I needed to do to initiate the 10 years of payments to qualify for loan forgiveness. The loan servicer stated that all I needed to do was start making payments and show proof of qualifying employment. The servicer reported that at ten years of active payments I just had to apply for loan forgiveness. I was informed the sliding scale payment option would be acceptable ( payments start out low then slowly increase as time goes by ). At no time did they state I needed to apply for the income driven repayment plan and had to switch my loan to a Direct Loan in order for the payments to qualify. All the while, anytime I changed jobs I submitted qualifying loan forgiveness employment proof to my loan servicer specifically showing my intentions to request loan forgiveness. Seven years later I contacted my loan servicer to submit updated proof of qualifying employment as I changed jobs, all the while actively making payments towards my loan in accordance to what my loan servicer had instructed. At that time I checked with Navient on what the process looked like for when I actually needed to apply for loan forgiveness. That was the first time I received information from my loan servicer that I had no qualifying payments, needed to switch to an income driven repayment plan, and switch my current federal loan to a Federal Direct Loan before I could start making qualifying payments. Seven years of responsible consistent payments were not counted towards loan forgiveness based on the misinformation provided to me by my loan servicer even though the amount I was paying monthly was similar to what loan forgiveness qualifying payments would have looked like. I attempted to reconcile this issue with Navient, as the company was aware of my intentions for loan forgiveness based on my initial request as well as ongoing submissions of proof of qualifying employment for loan forgiveness. Navient stated there is nothing can do and refused to make things right.

Consumer Complaint: Beginning in XX/XX/2017 I've disputed the student loans reported on my credit profiles by Navient, I wrote them numerous letters asking them to show the original promissory note I supposedly signed. They sent me a computer printout with no signature, only saying these loans were e-filed. I wrote again disputing the validity of the loans and they wrote my back stating I could dispute but this is my loan. I continued to dispute with the same dispute as before and that is to prove these are my loans in which are duplicated on my credit reports to appear as more than one they are different on the three reports.

Consumer Complaint: My loans are being serviced by Navient and Navient 's website doesn't provide me with enough information about my account to properly manage it. On their website, there is NO option to download monthly account statements showing previous balance, current balance or how much interest is being charged vis-a-vis how much of my payment they're applying to the interest. The website shows me how much of my payment is applied to interest, but without knowing how much interest is being charged, I have no idea if I'm paying all the interest every month or if some of it is being capitalized. There is also no option to discontinue electronic account management and return to snail-mail, paper statements. I'm on an " interest only '' repayment plan, but I've been consistently paying $ XXXX- {$50.00} more than the minimum payment for almost 3 years, but my balance never seems to go down. Don't I have the right to see and download full monthly account statements showing previous balance, current balance and interest charged? Navient won't give me this information. It seems very shady to me and I have to wonder what they don't want me to know. I can't attach any documents because there's no monthly statements.

Consumer Complaint: Navient continually raises my interest rate. Every year, it goes up at LEAST .5 %, and it is currently at 10.75 % ; up .75 % this year alone. I have tried contacting them to lower my interest rate ( I have a near perfect repayment history with them ) but they always tell me there is nothing they can do. I can not afford to pay more per month to pay this loan down, so it just sits there collecting an absurd amount of interest. I feel they are taking advantage of me and I feel powerless to stop it.

Consumer Complaint: I can not seem to pay down the principal amount that I borrowed. I was in forbearance for a while and am now in an IBR. When I originally consolidated my loans in 2004 the total principal balance was approximately $ XXXX. I have paid over $ XXXX back over the past 14 years and my principal balance is still $ XXXX. When I review a statement of all payments and charges against the accounts I can not make sense of the numbers.
