Consumer Complaint: I opened an account with Discover within the last couple of weeks, but had issues using it online the entire time. I was able to make a small purchase online, but then when I was trying to make larger purchases off XXXX and XXXX, both kept getting declined over and over despite my high credit limit and the purchases being nowhere near close to that limit. I called Discover on XX/XX/XXXX at XXXX XXXX to check and see what the issue was. I was told there was no issue with the card at all and it must be on the merchant end. The morning of XX/XX/XXXX, I tried the same purchase again. This time, Discover set off NUMEROUS fraud alerts and began blowing up my email, texts, and my phone. One of the emails sent said that this was a fraud concern, but if I had already dealt with the issue, to disregard the message. Since I had literally spoken with them 14 hours before and I was currently at work in the middle of things, I assumed I did not need to call immediately. However, within the hour, I received a text message from my ex-husband saying Discover had called him looking for me. He has NEVER been on the account or associated with the account in any way and Discover would NEVER have been given permission to contact him on my behalf under ANY circumstances. This was NOT a matter of me having defaulted on my bill for a year or something similar, which would be understandable. Rather, this was a matter I had ALREADY TRIED TO ADDRESS less than 24 hours prior and there was NO reason he should have ever been contacted about my account. When I contacted Discover, they said that they had found the number on my credit bureau report as a number I had been associated with historically. This number was NOT given to Discover by me in association with the account at any point in time, and again, my ex-husband has NEVER had permission to have any sort of information given to him. Following this huge breach of privacy, I closed my discover account on XX/XX/XXXX.

Issue: Improper use of your report

Subissue: Credit inquiries on your report that you don't recognize

Consumer Complaint: On XX/XX/2020, I got an alert that a hard inquiry was made against my credit. I was able to retrieve information about the loan company that made the hard inquiry. The loan company was Discover. I did not apply for any loan, so I was confused about why they would need to check my credit score. I called Discover that same day, XX/XX/2020, at XXXX XXXX. I spoke with a customer representative and I try to explain to her that I found that a hard inquiry was done on my report and I am calling to find out why. She asked for my social security and told me that their offices were closed and that I should call back on a different number on Monday during their business hours. I later found out that a person put me down as a cosigner for a student loan with Discover. The hard inquiry was not authorized by me. The customer representatives refused to cooperate with me in finding an appropriate solution for my issue. I then proceeded to dispute the hard inquiry with the credit bureau, XXXX, XXXX, and XXXX. XXXX asked me to send in documents that are difficult to obtain due to the global pandemic. The customer representatives that I spoke with at both Discover and XXXX were difficult to work with and unsympathetic to my situation. A detailed account of my experience with Discover : I called Discover back on Monday, XX/XX/2020, at XXXX XXXX and spoke with a customer representative from Utah. She asked for my social security number and she said there was no account found. I then tried to explain to her my situation and she told me she then transferred me to a different department that handles mortgages. I tried to explain to the customer representative from their mortgage department my situation and she said that there was no account found and I thanked her and ended the call. I called Discover again at XXXX XXXX that same day and I spoke with a customer representative from Utah. She asked me for my social security and I gave it to her and she said no account was found. I then told her that I am calling because I found that Discover made a hard inquiry against my credit and I had no knowledge about why it was done. I then explained to her that I called the credit bureau to notify them but I need to learn more information about what happened so that my issue can be properly resolved. The customer representative then said that she could connect me to the banking department to get more information. She transferred me and my call went straight to voicemail. I did not leave a voicemail and called Discover back at XXXX XXXX. Once again I spoke with a customer representative from Utah. I asked her if she could listen to what I have to say because I felt like they were not interested in helping me investigate a possible fraudulent activity. She then said to me in a sarcastic tone that she knows it must be frustrating to be transferred to different departments and not feel like I am not being heard. I responded and said okay but I just need help finding an appropriate solution to my issue so that I can go on with my day. She then told put me on hold and I waited about a minute. Then she said she will transfer me to the fraud department. I thank her and waited until I got transferred. Once transferred, I spoke with a customer representative from the fraud department. She asked for my social security and my date of birth. I gave her both information and I asked if I could explain my situation to her. I then tried to explain that I am not sure why a hard inquiry was done against my credit when I did not apply for anything with Discover. She then suspiciously asked me did you apply for a student loan and I responded no. I explained to her that I did not apply for any loans with Discover and I only had a Federal student loan. So, then I asked is that why my credit report was checked? She did not respond, and she said that she will have to end the call because of how I am speaking to her. She then hung up on me and I was shocked. I called Discover back and related it to a customer representative from Utah. I had a short conversation with her about my situation. She like the rest did not seem concerned about helping me resolve the issue. I asked if I can speak with someone from their student loan division and she transferred me to them. Once transferred, the customer representative from the student loan department asked for my social security as well and I asked if I can explain to her my situation because I keep getting transferred back and forth. She reluctantly said yes and while I was explaining my situation, she interrupted me several times and said that she does not understand what I am saying. I then repeated to her that I am not sure why a hard inquiry was done against my credit because I did not authorize for any student loan with Discover. She then said to me that she thought the way I spoke was condescending. I sighed and said I speak like this to people and that I am just trying to figure out what is going on. She then complained about how I was talking to her and I said to not take it personally because I am calling you for help with a possible fraudulent activity. She then calmed down and said that I was listed as a cosigner for a student loan for a person I at the time was not familiar with. She then commented on how my last name was unusual and that the person had the same name. I responded and said why are you questioning me about a student loan I did not authorize. I then explained how I was shocked that Discover will process a student loan application and check my credit report without me authorizing it. I was never contacted to authorize being a cosigner for a student loan. She then said that she canceled the application. I was relieved but still concerned about my credit score since it dropped by several points because they did not authorize a credit check with me. I thanked the customer representative and said I will call back to resolve the hard inquiry issue. I called Discover on XX/XX/2020, and I spoke with a Customer representative from Utah. I explained to her my situation and that I need some type of documentation of the incident so that I can have the hard inquiry done against my credit removed from my credit report. She said that she will email the fraud department and have them call me back. The customer representative sounded rehearsed and mentioned things that I never told her before. She also sounded unconcerned about my situation and did not check if my contact information was correct. It has been two weeks and I have yet to receive a phone call. I am tired of calling and annoyed with the lack of care from the customer representatives from Discover. My experience with them has been very time consuming and exhausting.

Issue: Dealing with your lender or servicer

Subissue: Keep getting calls about your loan

Consumer Complaint: Since XX/XX/2019, I receive monthly calls from Discover student loans about past due amounts. I have 4 loans. I make the payments and their computer system does not allocate the payments correctly. Often it overlooks the big loan and over allocates to the smaller loan. For over a year now, I have to call because they will not act on email or letter, and it wastes between 40-65 minutes of my time to get it reallocated. I get phone messages and hang ups from this company all the time. I was told that unless I signed up for direct withdrawal from my account, I would have to go through this every month. Finally after over a year, an associated stated that if I made 4 payments with separate numbers, that would fix the problem. I have done this. In the meantime, they are still showing an overdue balance that is not right as, once again, the previous month one payment was made and it was misallocated. For over a year and countless hours with harassing calls, I am at my wits end. I feel coerced in that they want control over my account and they waste my time every month to fix their computer error. I told them this was bad business practice and coercion. This can not continue and so I am filing a report. With all their bad business practices, they even compromised my credit score.

Issue: Closing your account

Subissue: Company closed your account

Consumer Complaint: Discover company closed my credit card due to inactivity. The account was in good standing and with around {$15000.00} credit line. The account was in active since XXXX XXXX. There was not even a single late or missed payment. Due to the Pandemic, I paid out my pending balances in XX/XX/XXXX and since then kept this credit card as my emergency credit card in case I need to. I logged in every month into my online portal and it showed me an available credit of {$15000.00}. This was a huge relief for my fami ly of XXXX kids. However today when i contacted Discover to reissue new cards for my account, i was startled and shocked to know that they closed my account due to inactivity. Obviously we were using my other credit cards to keep our expenses low during this pandemic. Within 6 months of inactivity during this Pandemic, Discover deactivated my account. The fact that i called discover a couple of times, and logged into the online account did not count as activity. Even today when i log in, it shows a credit balance of $ XXXX which leads me to believe my account is active. Building a credit to $ XXXX o n a credit card was a big thing and i was really looking forward to having this account active. Spoke to multiple people in Discover and they all denied reactivating the account and recommended me to open a new account, which would obviously not give me the same credit line that i had.

Issue: Attempts to collect debt not owed

Subissue: Debt was result of identity theft

Consumer Complaint: This is not a duplicate complaint about fraud but the complaint is about the cards payment policy that assist the thief when card is unknowingly stolen. Unlike when you deposit into your bank ; there isnt a hold on a payment and credit card companies instantly make payments available. Discover allowed three deposits totaling {$11000.00} in succession using the same bank and all payments made and bounced in a 10-day period. I can understand one, but 3 payments on the same card using the same bank account and that quickly?? Discover blames me but payments are out of my control. Credit Card companies give you a credit limit but do not protect the owner nor adhere to the credit limit. The more that is spent on a card ; the more money a credit card company makes so any problems and it is easier to blame the card holder.

Issue: Problem with a purchase shown on your statement

Subissue: Credit card company isn't resolving a dispute about a purchase on your statement

Consumer Complaint: There are 2 purchases I made with my Discover card that I have tried at XXXX to dispute with the company and I will not be paying off this amount on my card. The Ist charge was made with XXXX. XX/XX/2019, I made a charge with XXXX for a stay in XXXX XXXX for an event I was having. I had never been to XXXX and therefore relied on XXXX 's expertise by providing the address of location of the event and trusting they were providing the location of the event closest to the event center. After the payment and within 5 days of submitting our location to the event center, we were notified that the location was not with 3 miles that XXXX had claimed but it was 40 minutes and since most events were going to be leaving at XXXX in the morning, it would be impossible for us to attend those events as this was not even in the city so no taxes exist but in the countryside. We contacted XXXX and they refused to issue a refund saying ee only had 24 hours. Never minding they were the ones that deceived us letting us know the location was a few minutes from our location and not the 40 minutes. It wasn't even in the same village!. We contacted XXXX but they refused to reverse the charg e. The cost of this unused reservation was {$940.00}. The other charge was for XXXX XXXX. This company was a company in disarry. All charges were made timely and promptly. When they failed to deliver a dumpster costing us in over {$800.00} in labor costs, which we then required them to pay. They refused. instead they terminated the dumpster they were supposed to bring in then submitted a fake overweight charge of over {$420.00}, which was more than the cost to even hire one dumpster to begin with. We then filed a dispute with XXXX. Both disputes failed even when common sense should have prevailed.
