Issue: Closing an account

Subissue: Funds not received from closed account

Consumer Complaint: Discover closed my checking account without any notice. I had just transferred {$130.00} from my XXXX account prior to them closing my account and in response to my complaint, they said that they sent all funds in my account to the State of Maine Unemployment office. This included the {$130.00} transfer from my XXXX account. I received a check for {$3.00} today, which is nowhere close to the {$130.00} I had transferred. I do not understand why they would send MY funds to the State of Maine Unemployment office. It had nothing to do with the State of Maine so I don't know why they would send my money to some other business.

Issue: Problem with a credit reporting company's investigation into an existing problem

Subissue: Their investigation did not fix an error on your report

Consumer Complaint: I applied for credit card through the telephone. I own 2 homes. The Discover rep completed the application using the incorrect address. Security flagged account for address discrepancy ( that was good ) I called and was told the problem would be resolved and I would be receiving a new form to fill out to fix the discrepancy 2 or 3 weeks l received communication that the card was closed ( I never could activate it so I do not understand how it was closed if it wasn't activated ) they reported to credit agency. I do not think this should effect my credit. Discover did not address my complaint beyond " maybe someone will call, maybe not "

Issue: Fees or interest

Subissue: Problem with fees

Consumer Complaint: Recently audited my annual bank statement to better ensure my taxes for business expenses. I noticed a closed DISCOVER account from 2002 still auto-drafting $ XXXX/mo. I have learned from Discover card that I am paying approximately $ 30-35 in interest towards about a $ XXXX balance. They can't determine the original balance because it is too long ago. I have not received a bank statement, email or call regarding my account balance or summary. I have lived in my home for 6 years ... there has been no attempt to reach out to me regarding the returned mail. Instead, they have collected my auto draft payments for 20 years. I am flabbergasted a credit card company is not required to notify me of my balance at a monthly or annual basis. Much less, inform the consumer with balance, interest and principal payments. Today, I have paid about $ XXXX in interest for 20 years with little to no principle reduction. Discover offered me 3 months credit on interest which is approximately {$97.00} reduction to pay off {$1800.00}.

Issue: Dealing with your lender or servicer

Subissue: Trouble with how payments are being handled

Consumer Complaint: On XX/XX/2020, I informed Discover that I would not be able to make my student loan payments due to being without an income as the grace period ended. I did complete two payments but was laid off shortly after and informed them right away. I was told that I needed to call a number to report my request to defer payments. I replied promptly that I am XXXX and unable to verbally communicate. I was not offered an alternative accommodation to request this. This has continued for months. They have no reported this on my credit report and put me under default.

Issue: Incorrect information on your report

Subissue: Personal information incorrect

Consumer Complaint: On XX/XX/XXXX I get an email again letting me know that I have been approved and should be getting a card in the mail within 5-7 days. On XXXX XX/XX/XXXX I received another email stating a new credit injury has been detected and was from Discover. This all happened before I have even received my card in the mail. On XX/XX/XXXX my card came in the mail and stated to call In order to activate it. Right away my husband and I noticed my last name was spelled wrong and I also wanted to add him onto the card. I called the number and asked them if they could change the spelling of my last name because it was spelled wrong and I wanted to add my husband and they told me before they could do that I would be sent an email to fill out a form. While waiting for the form I continued talking to the lady and she told me once I filled the form out they could do the changes or I could fix it on my end by using the website. When I received the email it was a pre filled out form where I inputted my name and then signed but it was odd that it was a IRS form. When I signed and sent it back I called them back to ask about the form. They told me the form was to verify my identity and to make sure what I put on the application matched what IRS had. So, I asked how long does it normally take before they would receive what they needed back from IRS and they stated the time frame is unknown. So, every few days I would call to check in. On XX/XX/XXXX I called to see what the status was they told me that they received the information back on XX/XX/XXXX and that my account was closed. I was confused because I have never asked for them to open the account to begin with and asking why the account was opened if more information was needed? Then I asked them what was still missing that made them close the account? The response I received was that they do see what made them decide to close the account but they can not give me that information. With me asking what was the reason and they are looking at it but can not give it to me did not sit well with me. I asked them if this will be reported to my credit report due to me not even activating the card at all and they stated yes it would be on my credit as a closed account but thats not fair. I was told that it is a disgrace on my end and that there is nothing they can do or I can do about it. This is poor customer service and is fraud to have people get approved and then a injury is put on their credit before they even get the card to activate but then when they call the activate it they have to fill out a form and then wait for the information to get back to them just to find out your account has been closed based on something you cant even know. When reviewing the form that was sent to IRS it asked for the taxes for XXXX year taxes and not even XXXX which would of matched up with the information put on the application to begin with. So, innocence they played us and knew what they did and they are doing it to so many others out there.

Consumer Complaint: I applied for a discover balance transfer card a few weeks ago, and their system froze up during the application process and made me do it twice. I did not want to send {$5400.00} to my XXXX card. I only needed {$2700.00}. Yet, Discover charged me twice for the transfer and maxed out my Discover card. They refused to credit me after their phone rep said they would. I believe they are double charging people to get extra money in transfer fees.

Issue: Closing your account

Subissue: Company closed your account

Consumer Complaint: On XX/XX/XXXX I received an email from Discover. The email was requesting that I complete IRS Form XXXX XXXX XXXX. I first thought why & under what authority does Discover have to request my tax returns. I called Discover Credit Card & spoke to a Discover Representative & shared my concern. She advised me to ignore it because it was a scam, but I felt that she was not taking the matter seriously, so I asked to bespeak to the FRAUD DEPARTMENT. The Fraud Dept. Rep. advised me that Discover is demanding that I complete IRS Form so they can verify mt identity and taxes. I asked the Representative under what authority? I was told in a patronizing & sarcastic tone " IN THE CREDIT AGREEMENT '' I looked at the agreement & couldn't locate the wording. I asked the Rep.To please guide me to where on the agreement it states that Discover can at any time ask for my tax returns. The Rep.stated, " I don't know where it is ''. I asked to speak to a Supervisor and was told that a Supervisor was not available & if I don't comply my credit cards will be permanently closed. I had one Discover Card & since day one I have an EXCELLENT payment history.i had the card from XX/XX/XXXX until XXXX. I refuse Discover to have access to my Tax Returns. Allowing Discover access to my confidential IRS data is insane. They already have access to my entire credit reports from the credit bureaus & the authority to share all my private information with their business partners & affiliates.
