Issue: Problem when making payments

Subissue: Problem during payment process

Consumer Complaint: I remitted the payment coupon at the bottom of my statement along with a notice of instructions on how and where to credit the payment. Now my account has been closed without prior notice due to them saying I'm denying my contractual obligation to pay when I've in good faith tendered payment. I never denied my obligation to pay but the obligation is of the U.S., not me. I've sent Notices on XX/XX/XXXX about this matter and they signed to receive the information on XX/XX/XXXX according to to form XXXX. They have closed my account on XX/XX/XXXX according to data from XXXX about my consumer report.

Issue: Advertising and marketing, including promotional offers

Subissue: Confusing or misleading advertising about the credit card

Consumer Complaint: I recently applied for Discover Card on Wednesday - XX/XX/XXXX at XXXX and received an Approval Notification stating that I would receive my card within 5-7 Business Days and was Congratulated on the Offer. However, I then received a " bait and switch '' notice on Saturday - XX/XX/XXXX requesting a copy of my Tax Transcripts which Discover Card had XXXX ( Security Breach Firm ) send to my email requesting that I submit a Form XXXX, after they had approved my Credit on XX/XX/2022. Also, my scores took a negative hit on XX/XX/XXXX, after applying for the Discover Rewards Card. Also, this a Discriminatory Practice against XXXX XXXX Americans who are heavily and unnecessarily scrutinized for applying for a Discover Credit Card. This request was very biased and subjective with their random requests. This is an issue because Discover has already verified my Credit and identified other open lines with major companies. So, the " bait and switch '' is an illegal discriminatory practice targeted heavily towards XXXX XXXX Americans. There are other ways to verify a customer versus requesting your Tax Transcripts via a XXXX Form they forced XXXX to send out as their 3rd Party Vendor who has also been sued for Security Breach issues as well. When I called Discover Card on XX/XX/XXXX, after receiving this outrageous and outlandish request which also alludes to FALSE Advertisement and Misrepresentation when applying for Credit that was approved on XX/XX/XXXX, I was threatened by the Customer Service Representative and Discover Card that if I did not turn over my Last 2 Years Tax Transcripts, they would Cancel the card which was enroute and I would not be able to utilize the card. After, I informed them that I would not turn over my Tax Transcripts, based on this biased and blatantly Discriminatory practice which also evades and violates my privacy as U.S.Citizen, XXXX XXXX American Female, and U.S. Veteran, they threatened me again and said they would Close my account, after they had already approved the account on XX/XX/2022. Bait and Switch is against the Law. I only applied to receive a Credit Card and have never had a Credit Card Company request your IRS Tax Transcripts. This is also a typical Stereotype that Discover Card Financial Services has towards XXXX XXXX Americans - implying we don't trust you or believe you are eligible to receive this card, so prove it! '' This Stereotypical behavior is also Biased, XXXX, and Discriminatory. I received the Card and can not use it unless I turn over my Tax Transcripts or the Creditor Discover Financial Services has threatened to Close the account which would further Negatively Impact my Credit Score. This is Wrong and Illegal. You have Negatively impacted me already on XX/XX/2022, after I applied for the Credit and now you want to Negatively Impact a XXXX XXXX American Female who has stated " No, I am not turning over 2 years or any year of my Tax Transcripts to Discover Card for a Credit Card that was already approved on XX/XX/2022. ''

Issue: Problem when making payments

Subissue: Problem during payment process

Consumer Complaint: I was behind one payment for a Discover credit card due to illness/accident. I spoke with several Account managers and in the course of conversation each disconnected the call. I finally reached a manager who stated there were several option which would be available to me. I chose an option which would decrease the interest rate to 09 %, pat {$38.00} per month. Late fees are suppressed and the credit card will REMAIN THE SAME.I accepted this program and was paying monthly to commence on XXXX XXXX, 2022. I have the information in writing. When starting the program, I was now informed that the credit card will be immediately " REVOKED ". This whole scenario was DECEPTIVE & FRAUDULENT!!!! This appears to obtain monies from me for future payments under false pretenses. I am a XXXX XXXX, XXXX. Discover Card reps. acted in a most deceitful manner which is a very unprofessional manner, and Discover Card Corp. should be punished as deemed by the U.S. Government.

Subissue: Problem with customer service

Consumer Complaint: I have had a Discover Card since 1989. I have never missed a payment. Discover closed my account due to inactivity even though I made a purchase and paid in full as they requested. I called customer service and was told there was nothing that can be done. The supervisor, XXXX, did nothing to find out if there was a simple reinstatement process. I feel as though I have been an outstanding customer and complied with their rules and they closed my account and affected my credit score as a result because now the age of my credit and credit lines have become reduced. After a number of calls and a letter they refuse to reinstate my account. I have done nothing wrong. Please help.

Issue: Applying for a mortgage or refinancing an existing mortgage

Subissue:

Consumer Complaint: We applied for a home equity loan with Discover on XX/XX/XXXX. This was all electronic, with a portal to upload documents and e sign everything. After attempting to upload income information unsuccessfully ( received error messages from the site ), we received several emails and phone calls that we needed to contact them. So we did. I spoke to a loan XXXX on XX/XX/XXXX. They verified some income information over the phone and advised we were pre-approved for approximately XXXX XXXXXXXX and what our rate and term would be. The agent told us we need to upload the borrowers certificate within 7 days and then we would get notifications of the documents we needed to upload as well for the loan. We were told the process was taking around 6-8 weeks and was also dependent on how quickly we loaded our documents etc. I could not e-sign the borrowers certificate so we printed and signed and then scanned it in and uploaded it the next day. Over the next few days we added our XXXX, proof of insurance and mortgage statement and other documents. We were waiting on pay stubs because that week was a XXXX period and we wanted to Ensure we had the two most recent to avoid delays. On XX/XX/XXXX we received notice our application was closed. We were very confused as we were proactively working on our part. I emailed the loan officer and said it needed to be re-opened. The told us no, we needed to reapply because 25 days had passed. We had no idea of this 25 day guideline and no one told us. Not to mention we were just pre-approved on XX/XX/XXXX so only 5 business days had passed. We made financial commitments based on the pre-approval we received and now have suffered damage because of this misrepresentation of information from Discover. I will also note the emails stating our application was closed says we havent been able to get in touch with you Which is blatantly a lie because we just spoke to them the week before and were proactively uploading documents to our application.

Issue: Problem with a purchase shown on your statement

Subissue: Credit card company isn't resolving a dispute about a purchase on your statement

Consumer Complaint: On XX/XX/2019, I initiated a reservation to stay at XXXX XXXX. Within minutes, I cancelled and received confirmation that the cancellation was approved. I assumed that the charge was removed but never confirmed. I was on auto pay, so regretfully, I did not always check my balance. When I checked my account, I noticed that I was double billed and not credited so I reached out to Discover as I assumed this was an easy fix. I was given a temporary credit but then rebilled. This process of disputing to receive a temporary credit and then rebilled has occurred at least XXXX times over the past XXXX years. Each time, I am transferred from department to department with no permanent resolution. In addition, I've provided copies of the email cancellation notification by uploading to my account as well as by mail. I even say the documents when I uploaded them but now they are no longer visible and all representatives are saying they are not there. I have been billed twice for {$530.00} when I should not have been. I did not stay at XXXX XXXX and the reservations were cancelled. Discover continues to transfer me from XXXX department to the other and will not escalate to a decision maker.

Subissue: Privacy issues

Consumer Complaint: I have a card with Discover. A charge was declined today ( XXXX ), so I called them. Discover customer service told me my account was restricted until they verify some information on my account. They emailed me an authorization form ( IRS 4506-C ) that would allow them to request my tax return from the IRS. They told me my account would be closed if I don't do this within six weeks, and that there is no alternative process. They said they would use this process to verify my name, social security number, home address, and birth date. I believe they can verify name and SSN this way. Their attempt to verify my home address will fail because Discover has my current address while the IRS has my previous address where I lived when I filed my taxes, which I don't think is an unusual state of affairs or unreasonable. I don't believe they can verify my birth date this way at all. Aside from that, I am much more concerned with the privacy implications here. By demanding direct and uncensored access to my tax return, they are going to receive far more information than they need. They will see my spouse 's name and SSN, our incomes, how many children we have ( or claimed, at least ) and how much we spend on their education, our bank account numbers from the direct deposit form, our other credits and deductions, and much more personal and private information than I can enumerate here.
