Issue: Problem with a credit reporting company's investigation into an existing problem
Subissue: Their investigation did not fix an error on your report
Consumer Complaint: XXXX and XXXX are reporting incorrectly that I am 120 days past due on several loans with the Dept of Education that have a {$0.00} balance and a {$0.00} past due. This is harming my credit and it is obviously impossible to be past due on something that does not have a balance. The are four Dept of Education accounts that are reporting incorrectly.

Consumer Complaint: Nelnet gave me the wrong payoff information for my student loan. The loan was overpaid by {$250.00}. They show that my loan was {$6600.00} and that I paid {$6900.00} and that gave me a {$0.00} balance. The payment cleared the bank. I called and they at first said I had a XXXX balance and that it wasn't overpaid. Then after being on hold for 45 minutes they finally decided they did owe me the difference and would send it out within 10-12 days. That did not happen. After the second phone call and being put on hold for 30 minutes they determined it would take 2-4 weeks to refund my overpayment. Now after the 3rd phone call and being on hold for 45 minutes I am being told it will take 6-8 weeks for a refund. I think this is standard procedure hoping people will get tired and give up. The entire 10 years I have had this loan they have misapplied my payments and refused to correct any errors on their part. I have asked for an audit of my account multiple times and to date of never received it. Complete crooks!!!

Issue: Struggling to repay your loan
Subissue: Can't get other flexible options for repaying your loan
Consumer Complaint: I have been making student loan payments on and off for 20 years to Nelnet. In XXXX i started making consistent payments on income based repayment plan. After 1 year the principal balance of my loan went up several thousant dollars because of interest, I called and said i wanted my payment amount to at least cover the interest so my balance would not go up. They changed my plan to an extended plan which i did not authorize. I would not have authorized a plan that would not qualify me for the Public Service Forgiveness program if it had been explained to me. I am a XXXX and told them i wanted to be part of that new program, that people were just starting to hear about in XXXX. But they did change my plan unbeknownst to me and 7 years worth of nearly {$1000.00} a month payments never gave me credit toward the Forgiveness Program. My balance never went down and now close to my retirement they told me I still owe what I owed 7 years ago and no payments went toward the Forgiveness Program. I want credit toward the Forgiveness Program for those 7 years.

Issue: Incorrect information on your report
Subissue: Old information reappears or never goes away
Consumer Complaint: Several XXXX serviced accounts went delinquent XX/XX/XXXX and stayed delinquent until XX/XX/XXXX. As of XX/XX/XXXX these should no longer have been reported as delinquent due to the statute of limitations. I disputed this information several times with the CRA and XXXX then changed the information to make it appear more recent. This is classic case of an unfair and deceptive trade practice. I have applied for a loan and if my interest rate is directly affected due to this false information, I will sustain an financial injury to which I will be owed damages. This must be removed IMMEDIATELY.

Issue: Struggling to repay your loan
Subissue: Problem lowering your monthly payments
Consumer Complaint: Payments to loan are not being properly applied to interest and principal. There will be months were {$0.00} are applied to principal and after an entire year of payments the over all principal only went down {$200.00}. When I contacted the lender about ways reduce the interest the only offered a 0.25 % reduction for auto debits which I signed up for. The next month, the payment remained unchanged as the variable interest on the loan increased again to around 8.5 % I make regular payments to this loan and I just want to find a way to get out from underneath it quicker.

Issue: Attempts to collect debt not owed
Subissue: Debt is not yours
Consumer Complaint: I applied for student loan consolidation through a new provider. The new provider paid all of my previous student loan debts. After the new provider paid Nelnet, Nelnet then added another XXXX dollars to my account ( to which they are also applying interest. ) I called three times asking for an explanation and was given three different answers. ( I always owed this money but it was never reflected on my account, This XXXX dollars was forgotten and never added to my account, if I had done my own calculations for my pay schedule I would have seen that I always owed this much. ) Each time I asked for a detailed account of why I owed this money. It was not provided after the first call, the second call but then after the third call, a pay history was sent explaining why I owed them money. They are now claiming i owe them XXXX and that I should be paying them every XXXX dollars every month - strange payment terms I never agreed to. I would also like to add on, their student loan forgiveness program is fraudulent in nature period as clearly they never had any intention of forgiving any loans.

Issue: Dealing with your lender or servicer
Subissue: Trouble with how payments are being handled
Consumer Complaint: I have been paying back student loans with Nelnet for years. However, in XX/XX/2018 they changed their policies and applied my payments to interest and principal on only one group of loans, instead of both. This made it look like I was paying down much more of the principal according to tax documents filed, and paying less interest than that which was actually accruing. But according to their policy, the interest continued to accrue on the other set of loans on the order of over {$2300.00} that year. So, while I paid about {$5000.00} last year into the account, it looks like I only paid interest of {$810.00}. This is simply not true, since the interest continued to build up, they just reapplied it back into the principal. Essentially, I am now POORER because I can not deduct the amount of interest I actually was supposed to be paying all along on my taxes. They claim it helps to pay off my loans more quickly, but that is not true, since both groups of loans have the exact same interest rate, and interest continued to build on the other account, but their policy in place did not apply my monthly payments to that account 's interest. This is a terrible policy that ultimately could make a lot of other borrowers poorer in the long run, like myself. This should not happen, and in fact, represents negligent business and loan practices. They told me they could not amend my 1098 E until next year, but the limit is {$2500.00} for interest per year, so even next year, I will not get the benefit of the full tax deduction that should have been in place this tax year. This kind of financial action should be illegal, if it is not already. Please save others from such a fate.
