Issue: Problem with a purchase shown on your statement

Subissue: Card was charged for something you did not purchase with the card

Consumer Complaint: I was phoned XX/XX/20XXXX XXXX by an individual claiming to be Discover Card and that I had 2 possible fraud purchases on my Discover. They claimed to be a firewall for the company and was verifying my card information. They knew my Credit card number expiration date, I verified the 3 digits on the back ( stupidly ). They knew my Banks name, routing number and my account number, my balance, and my social security number. They wanted to put protection on both my Discover card and my bank, and any other credit cards I had. They advised me to get on my computer, check my bank balance and and pull up the browser so they could add a firewall protection. Problem for them was I didnt know what a browser was or how to open it. They attempted to help me, by telling me to just type in I believe upstart on my computer. I cant remember the name of what I pulled up but I got a number XXXX they requested, then I noticed they had a pointer on my computer screen. I ask why I could see a pointer on my screen I was told they were trying to help me get into my browser. He ask I get at least 20 ft away from my computer because my phone was interfering with the process. I was also ask to find the IP address on my internet box. By this time I was getting aggravated and had been on the phone for quite some time. My husband came in and told me to hang up it was a fraud call, the fella on the phone XXXX XXXX? he was XXXX and I had problems understanding him was trying to get into the conversation to prolong my discontinue, saying he just needed 10 more minute and my verbal permission for the process and I discontinued the call. They did attempt to call me back. The number was XXXX. I have already reported to Discover and the account was closed. My bank closed out my account as well.

Issue: Closing your account

Subissue: Company closed your account

Consumer Complaint: I have tried repeatedly to close out the secured credit card with Discover and each time I am met with opposition. They allege that I owe money on it. I have asked for a bill to be sent to me and to have the payment options included and everytime I ask I can not get it. Now I check my credit score today and they closed my account and charged it off as bad debt. This is beyond unacceptable. As the cherry on top of the cake they put very derogatory remarks on my credit report and my credit score went from a XXXX to a XXXX. Discover refuses to help. They wont let me pay my balance off and close it. So now Im still stuck between a rock and a hard place. I dont want to get an attorney involved but I am afraid if they don't help me with removing the derogatory remarks and let me close my account for the past due balance that I have been trying to pay for literal months I will have to retain one.

Issue: Problem with a company's investigation into an existing problem

Subissue: Their investigation did not fix an error on your report

Consumer Complaint: Discover Student Loans is reporting that I have past due accounts of greater than XXXX days starting in XXXX and XXXX. Discover Student Loans put these accounts in a past due/delinquent/charged off status when I was in a XXXX XXXX plan. The Trustee was making payments on Discover Student Loan account while I was in XXXX XXXX. Both the Trustee and myself were following the legal ramifications of the XXXX XXXX. Discover Student Loans is unwilling to correct my account and remove the past due/delinquent/charged off status. My credit report is inaccurately reflecting the Discover Student Loan account status as past due/charged off now and while I was in XXXX XXXX. I have also filed a dispute with XXXX and XXXX. The credit bureaus responded that Discover states they are reporting accurately and therefore my credit report status for Discover Student loan remains the same.

Issue: Getting a credit card

Subissue: Application denied

Consumer Complaint: On XX/XX/2023, XXXX XXXX, XXXX, XXXX XXXX XXXX, applied for XXXX credit card with Discover Bank. On or about XX/XX/2023, a complaint was submitted to the CFPB that Discover Bank 's denial violated the federally protected rights of XXXX XXXX as its decision was based on INACCURATE information provided by the credit reporting agencies ; namely XXXX, XXXX, and XXXX. Discover responded by not reversing their decision and stating that their decision " can not be changed '' and once again relied on INACCURATE information in the consumer credit report. Discover Bank has and continues to violate federally protected rights. Specifically, regardless of the reason, XXXX XXXX has the right to credit. Discover Bank was provided the social security number and other identifiable information which gave them access to the securities which were underwritten on the social security number of XXXX XXXX. Denying XXXX XXXX credit, is a violation of the Equal Credit Opportunity Act and Consumer Credit Act. Discover Bank is also discriminating against me and taking a prejudicial and discriminatory action against me based on inaccurate credit information, alleged previous transaction history, and/or financial status. Discover Bank is also in violation of the Securities Exchange Act as Discover Bank lists application " denials '' as " assets '' in their XXXX reports filed with the SEC and is/has securitized my personal information for their sole benefit in further violation of federal codes, laws. rules and/or statutes.

Issue: Problem with a purchase shown on your statement

Subissue: Credit card company isn't resolving a dispute about a purchase on your statement

Consumer Complaint: I disputed a charge on my Discover account because the service was not provided. As a result the problem that I had them out for occurred again costing thousands of dollars and resulting in my contacting someone else to come out and fix the problem and I paid them for the service they performed. I offered to provide my credit card company with proof but I was told they did not need documentation at that time and if it was needed they would reach out and request it. On XX/XX/2023 I noticed the charge that was disputed was placed back on my account. I spent approximately 90 minutes on the phone discussing this. I was told the dispute was closed in the merchant 's favor and i was placed on long holds while they reviewed the notes so they could figure out what was going on. I initially spoke to XXXX who gave me attitude at one point, and was having a problem answering my question. I never received anything in the mail or via email about this dispute. So I found out the dispute was closed and ruled in the merchant 's favor when I called. XXXX asked me if I received the notification sent. I asked how it was sent. She placed me on a long hold came back and never answered me. After realizing she was having issues explaining what was going on i asked if I could speak to a Supervisor. She placed me on a long hold and came back and told me one was not available and she could have someone call me back. My main issue with her is that she raised her voice at me on the call which I took issue with because she was unable to answer questions and provide customer service. I attempted to call again about the same issue. I was transferred to a couple people before I got to XXXX ( I am not sure if this was her name ). XXXX told me that I would have to contact the merchant and have them agree to refund me. I explained that I had contacted the merchant before even filing the dispute. What she was saying to me made no sense. I explained that I had information to support my case but you closed my case and ruled in the merchant 's favor without asking for it or considering it. She was unable to respond to why my information wasn't being considered. After going around in circles with her I asked to speak to a supervisor. She said one wasn't available and she could have someone contact me in 48 hours. I asked her name and she disconnected the call. This is why I am not sure of her name. I was trying to address this before paying my bill. Since I spent a lot of time on the phone and was unable to get it addressed, I paid my bill minus the {$99.00} disputed amount. I will not be using my card anymore until someone contacts me back to discuss this and hopefully resolve it. I am finding the explanation I received incomplete and unreasonable and I would like my questions answered by someone in charge. This has been a horrible experience and a waste of my time.

Issue: Problem when making payments

Subissue: Problem during payment process

Consumer Complaint: On XX/XX/XXXX I contacted Discover to inquire about my alleged scheduled payment of {$140.00} which should have been processed by my Financial Institution ( I didn't see any pending payments when reviewing my bank account which prompted the call to Discover ) The representative that I spoke with at Discover apprised me that I did not have an automatic payment set up nor did they see any pending payments, hence, I made an online payment for {$140.00} to avoid a late fee. Fast forward to XX/XX/XXXX ; I went online and made a payment of {$140.00} to satisfy my XXXX payment. On XX/XX/XXXX while reviewing my bank account to make certain the payment was processed I noticed there were 2 payments for {$140.00} so I contacted Discover and was informed that one payment was an automatic withdrawal which I did not authorize and the other I made online ( that also happened in XXXX but I did not catch it until the issue in XXXX ) I requested that one payment be refunded since it caused a financial hardship to me and I was told it would be processed. After checking back numerous times and being told it's processing I finally asked to speak with a supervisor to expedite the matter. On XX/XX/XXXX a supervisor named XXXX ( no last name given ) advised me that I would not get the refund because my billing cycle started on the XXXX of XXXX and my next payment is due XX/XX/. Well this is XXXX XXXX and my initial request was before the new cycle started. I reached out to Discover to try and rectify the issue, however, the company 's representatives have been unfair, deceptive and abusive in their dealings. I would like to amicably resolve this issue and move forward. Thank you for the platform to convey my grievance. Caveat - be leary

Issue: Problem with a company's investigation into an existing problem

Subissue: Investigation took more than 30 days

Consumer Complaint: I noticed an account on my credit reports from a company called Discover that I never had any business relationship with. Discover was attempting to collect on a an alleged debt in the amount of {$1100.00}. I have had my identity stolen and sent Discover a letter via certified mail XX/XX/ notifying them about this fraudulent account including a copy of my Identity Theft report asking them to please delete the fraudulent account from my credit reports. I also disputed this fraudulent Discover account with the credit bureaus. Discover however continued reporting this fraudulent Discover account with the credit bureaus. XX/XX/ I noticed Discover still reporting this fraudulent Discover account with the credit bureaus. I then sent Discover a DEBT VALIDATION LETTER via certified mail XX/XX/ requesting the agreement between Discover and myself and the original application for the account. Discover violated the FCRA 15 U.S.C. 1681g ( d ) by failing to provide the evidence requested after being notified about the identity theft. FCRA 15 U.S.C. 1681g ( e ) states .... a business entity that has provided credit to, provided for consideration products, goods, or services to, accepted payment from, or otherwise entered into a commercial transaction for consideration with, a person who has allegedly made unauthorized use of the means of identification of the victim, shall provide a copy of application and business transaction records in the control of the business entity, Pursuant to the FDCPA 15 U.S.C. 1692g ( b ) Discover was required to cease collection efforts until the alleged debt was validated but failed to do so. Discover continued reporting the alleged debt to the credit bureaus in its attempts to collect on the alleged debt thereby violating the FDCPA 15 U.S.C. 1692g ( b ). I saw the fraudulent Discover account XX/XX/ on my credit reports. I then sent Discover a FAILURE TO RESPOND letter via certified mail XXXX XXXX XXXX Discover violated the FDCPA 15 U.S.C. 1692e ( 2 ) In its attempt to collect on an alleged debt by falsely representing the character, amount, or legal status of any debt. Discover violated the FDCPA 15 U.S.C. 1692f In their attempts to collect on the alleged debt by collecting an amount that was not expressly authorized by an agreement creating the debt or permitted by law. Discover violated the FDCPA 15 U.S.C. 1692g ( b ) by not ceasing collection efforts until the debt was validated. Case law is well settled that reporting an alleged debt to the credit reporting agencies is " an attempt to collect on a debt ''. Pursuant to the FDCPA 15 U.S.C. Additionally, Discover FAILED TO RESPOND to the DEBT VALIDATION LETTER within 30 days causing me to send a FAILURE TO RESPOND letter via certified mail XXXX XXXX XXXX Discover violated the FCRA 15 U.S.C. 1681i by not validating the alleged debt within 30 days. I saw the fraudulent Discover account XXXX XXXX on my credit reports and it is still there as of this filing.
