Issue: Getting a credit card
Subissue: Application denied
Consumer Complaint: Between XXXX and XXXX, I applied multiple times for credit limit increases on my existing credit cards with Citi. Despite maintaining a responsible financial profile, my requests were consistently denied. The reasons provided for these denials varied each time, including explanations such as insufficient credit history or inadequate income, which did not align with my financial circumstances. In addition to seeking credit limit increases, I also applied for other credit card products offered by Citi during this period. These applications were similarly unsuccessful, with denials accompanied by different, often inconsistent reasons that seemed disproportionate to my financial standing. As an XXXX-American residing in XXXX, CA a city with a significant XXXX population the recent findings against Citi for discriminating against XXXX Americans have led me to believe that my ethnicity may have played a role in these repeated denials. Given the nature of Citi 's discriminatory practices, particularly targeting surnames ending in -ian and -yan and individuals in regions like XXXX, I am concerned that my applications were not evaluated based on financial merit alone. This realization has prompted me to question the integrity of the application and evaluation processes I underwent and whether they were affected by the biases identified in the CFPB 's findings. The varying and unclear reasoning behind the denials further fuels this concern.

Consumer Complaint: On XXXX XXXX, XXXX, I paid the minimum monthly amount due on my credit card. That date was the deadline. The next day, I noticed that Citi had charged a late fee of {$40.00}. I called customer service and, after a long discussion, the bank reversed the charge. However, the agent took the position that the bank had " waived '' the fee as a courtesy. I explained that charging customers late fees when payment was timely was illegitimate. My concern is that the practice must be systemic. An investigation is needed.

Consumer Complaint: In late XXXX or early XX/XX/2023, I discovered that a credit line charge of {$9200.00} was placed on my Home Depot charge account ( the account is managed by Citibank for Home Depot ) on XX/XX/2023 for what appears to be plumbing supplies. I called and the personnel at the bank were courteous and gladly offered to remove the charge and run their investigation in to the apparent fraud. This morning, XX/XX/2023, I received a one page letter that says, '' The facts and/or information reviewed as part of the investigation does not substantiate the claim of unauthorized use. '' I called and was requesting that they provide me details of how this was determined ; and they would not help. They said that if I mailed or faxed them a front and back copy of my driver 's license then they could possibly open another review of my claim. I personally think that these methods are not a proper level of security, both in terms of insecure handling the transport of this highly personal data, nor had they given me any valid security conscious reason to send in more private data when they could not give me any of their findings. They offered that they had signatures on the order for the transaction. I offered to meet at a local Citibank office and then we could compare the data and if needed they then could look at my license. They would not accept. I offered to meet on an online meeting to do the same and they would not accept. I also noticed that they do not use any form of multi-factor authentication when I login to their banking web site. They mentioned that the supplies were cited as for XXXX XXXX as the job description. I found a XXXX XXXX at a nearby XXXX MA address. I would like the CFPB to make Citibank be 100 % transparent and recognize that a fraud, possibly an inside employee scheme has happened here. Most importantly, I learned that Home Depot allows their customers to access credit from a card account they do not have with themselves, called the " Account Lookup Feature ''. This seems very risky and certainly invites fraud. The way they do this is the customer can supply a Social Security Number keyed into a key pad and the same with a drivers license belonging to the card holder and be allowed full access to purchase on that card account, such as in this case. Apparently this individual was allowed to use the account look up feature and supplied my SSN, but was incorrect on my drivers license. Why did the transaction then get approved? Also why would someone do this fraud on their own account? It's a terrible situation to be in. Please help. Thank you so very much in advance.

Issue: Closing your account
Subissue: Can't close your account
Consumer Complaint: Starting in XX/XX/2023 I attempted to close by Citi-Bank credit card as it as no longer needed. I first tried closing the account on-line through the Citi-Bank website . When I notice a few days later that the account was still open, I called the service number and spoke to a person. I was very adamant that I wanted the account closed and that I was not interested in the incentives offered to keep the account open. Today I received a monthly bill from Citi-Bank . As I have not used the card for many months, there were no charges on it and nothing is owed. But the account is plainly still open.

Issue: Trouble using your card
Subissue: Credit card company won't increase or decrease your credit limit
Consumer Complaint: In XX/XX/XXXX, I opened a Citi XXXX XXXX account to take advantage of an offer allowing for an eighteen-month balance transfer with XXXX interest. My monthly payments were consistently due around the XXXX of each month, and were made on time. However, my son suffered a XXXX XXXX XXXX in XXXX, and with numerous medical appointments and XXXX visits, I unintentionally missed the payment due on XX/XX/XXXX. I promptly paid the bill, including all the late fees, on XX/XX/XXXX. On XX/XX/XXXX, I received an email from Citi notifying me of a substantial decrease in my credit limit, from {$8000.00} to {$2400.00}, citing " balances on revolving credit and low payments on one or more of your accounts with us '' as the reasons for the decrease. Interestingly enough, just a month prior, one of my other credit cards significantly increased my credit limit. I believe Citi 's decision to reduce my credit limit by more than {$5600.00} may have XXXX motivations, but it appears they are using the credit bureau as a cover. This explanation would be more acceptable if my credit score wasn't in the high XXXX hundreds and if I didn't have an impeccable payment history. I genuinely believe it's worth investigating whether Citi may be unfairly targeting a specific group of credit card holders. I made multiple attempts to contact the company to resolve this issue, but unfortunately, I haven't had any success.

Consumer Complaint: On XX/XX/2023 Citi Bank Randomly Lowered my Credit Limit on My credit card with them from {$10000.00} to {$300.00}. I never missed a payment with Citi and I have had the card for years and I have a good credit score. I fear I am being bullied by the Big Bank of Citi and I fear liquidity issues with the bank being the reason for the pro-active lower credit limit. This is an INSANE DECREASE. I have multiple credit cards with CITI. My citi credit card ending in XXXX lowered to {$5900.00} from {$9300.00} On XX/XX/2023. I requested in writing to restore my limit and they refused. These credit limit decreases has caused me decline transactions, hardship, grief and pain and negatively impacted my credit report. Also the Bank cites them periodically checking my credit report and cites things on my credit report but I never authorized them to randomly pull my credit report and I think they are in violation of law by pulling my credit report without my permission. I think this is atrocious what Citi is doing to me and I think they need to be fined and they need to restore my credit limits. I have been a customer of Citi for 9 years and havent missed a payment. I think they are a disgrace for what they have been doing to me. Citi reasoning on the letter is " Your credit report shows your balances on your revolving accounts are too high in relation to those credit lines but many of my credit cards with other banks are fully paid off so this is a lie. I think this bank is having liquidity issues or they wouldnt be doing this.

Consumer Complaint: I recently opened a HELOC with XXXX XXXX XXXX. I had an outstanding personal loan ( XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX ) that needed to be paid off as part of the HELOC loan process- HELOC has to be in the first spot for creditors if I go into default. XXXX XXXX XXXX ( XXXX ) issued a check on XX/XX/XXXX in the amount of XXXX. It was shipped to the overnight delivery option. I have confirmed with XXXX that it was shipped to the correct address and confirmed with XXXX XXXX that this was the correct address the check should have gone to. XXXX XXXX states that once checks are received, that an email is sent with confirmation, usually within 7 business days. When we hit XX/XX/XXXX, i reached out and they said that sometimes processing can take up to 30 days. On XX/XX/XXXX I reached back out to XXXX XXXX and they still did not have the check. I reached out to XXXX on the same day and asked them to research to see if the check had been received and processed. They sent a copy of the image which I forwarded to XXXX XXXX. This is where the issues start. The check was cashed on XX/XX/XXXX but not by XXXX XXXX. The back of the check states it was processed by Citi Bank. I sent the check image and processing to XXXX XXXX. They state they have no record of the check. I reached back out to XXXX and they stated I had to work with XXXX XXXX because they had done everything they could do because they sent the check to the correct location and XXXX XXXX touched the check before Citi Bank processed it. XXXX XXXX again stated they did not have the check and suggested I call Citi Bank since they cashed it. Citi Bank will not talk to me because I do not have a Citi Bank account and they do not help people who are not their customers. They said they would cooperate with an Investigation from XXXX. XXXX will not do an investigation with Citi Bank because they made the check was made to XXXX XXXX and stated there is nothing more they could do on their end.
